Done. Thanks Glenn.

Although I must admit the summary paragraph at the end when you double check your answers... it needs some help. But oh well, good survey.

Glenn, will the results be made public at some point? Be interesting to see how many people filled it out and what the percentages are.

Thanks for the input on the summary Doug.

Yes, at some point we will begin releasing results. We're still trying to decide when, and then how often for updates after that.

Thanks to all for filling it out. Keep spreading the news.

He He, that was actually just something I tossed together while testing and didn't think would make it into the final version. But it was liked by the people who tested the system so it was left in.

Unfortunately not all answers really "fit the mold" easily and I didn't have time to make it tweak answer to make it "read well". So it's a pretty gnarly comprimise.

Maybe if a survey like this happens again I'll have time to fully massage that and help it always make more "readable" text out of peoples answers.

(FWIW, it was also a test of some ideas I've had for future letter writing applications....Instead of having people pick and choose paragraphs I'd like to ask them a series of questions and then based on their answers automatically suggest paragraphs for them. I think it's got a lot of potential for that area.)

Kevin, you should get a thank you page at the end. Is it possible you accidently hit the other button to change your answers, that one takes you back with your current answers filled in so it's easier for you to revise.

If you can't get the thanks page for some reason drop me a PM or e-mail and I'll try to figure out what's happing for you.
Kevin
apparently you cant leaver anything blank like i did for the buttercup etc areas, since i dont camp there i dont really have a valid opinion on stuff down there
JET
how about a no opinion/don't know box in the future. I don't really go to the south dunes so I can't really answer for that area.

Or break it down by what area people camp in.

Just my .02.

I liked it though.

That would have been a good option.

The only other criticism I have is that one person can fill out the forms multiple times. Doesn't seem to validate the survey.

They can....but there are safeguards in place to detect that kind of ballot stuffing. Any suspicious voting activity is brought to the attention of the TRT so that they can deal with the data as they see fit.

This was one of the most difficult parts of building the survey and the fact that nobody ihas been inconvienced by it is great vindication to me that I did my job well.

There are a number of difficulties to deal with - for example you can't just look for a bunch of votes coming from the same IP address since it is perfectally valid for all the members of a family to take the survey on the same computer. But the survey was to be anonymous so requiring logins would also be a bad idea.

We toyed with the idea of doing a confirmation system where you had to provide an e-mail address then would have a "key" e-mailed to you that you would need to use to cast your votes. But we were afraid that would make it too cumbersome for people.

The current system is very passive instead. It just watchs the incoming data and then lets the TRT know if anything suspicious happens. This way it dosn't inconvience the users and no votes are every "discounted" automatically without having a human look at the logs to confirm that something unfair is being done.

This was something I was very passionate about becuase as many of you know I'm not a big fan of on-line surveys at all because of how easily they can be manipulated. I won't go into details about how the anti-stuffing stuff works since that could potentially give people info on how to bypass it. But thankfully so far it does not look like anyone has tried to monkey with the system.

Oh my. Well, if there is any way to rescind my responses, please do so. What do you need from me to see that gets done?

Vicki, I don't understand why you would want to recind your responses.

Regardless of your reasons, that is not possible. We built in the confirmation section at the end of the survey so dune users could review their answers for accurancy, or give them opportunity to opt out at that time, before hitting the 'submit' bitton.

So..any count on how many of the surveys have been completed yet? I know it's only been a week or so..but it might be an interesting item.
jhitesma
Glenn is on vacation this week so I don't think we'll have a count for awhile.

I do know that in just the first day he said about as many took the on-line survey as had filled out the paper surveys - and the database looks like it's had quite a few more entries since then so I suspect the turnout has been pretty good.

I don't know how long they plan on keeping the survey running but I suspect it will be up for awhile. I also know Glenn has said the won't release any info on results at least until the paper surveys are tallied and added as well. But that they will likely wait until the survey is over before releasing results so as not to affect the outcome. (Sometimes when people see how others have voted in a survey it can affect their choices.) At the same time I would not be surprised if Glenn did give us a general idea of how many people have responded when he gets back from his vacation.

Sounds good..thanks..I was hoping it had a good turnout...Hopefully in the thousands, not hundreds..icon_smile.gif

We have over a hundred so far. Its still very early as we expect more activity as dune season acpproaches.

Please keep spreading the word. If you know someone without internet access, lets try and get them a paper copy or access to a computer.
BeachHead
OK...it's a start. Do you have any sort of cut off date? Sounds like this will be up there for a while?
LoBuck
That is something the TRT will have to decide and that has not happened yet.

One thing for sure, we have found out what it takes to get a survey done this way and are at a better point to do it in the future. This one was a huge amount of work and is looking to be a valuable tool.

The web site itself has a great potential for informing the dune users. The more it is used the better it will get.

If anyone has ideas for other Polls (not surveys) that can be added to the web site to get quick samples of dune users veiws, shoot me an email. If you can send the Question and a few choices that would be helpful, but "Questions Only" are welcome.

Yes, the results will be posted. The survey is still open, so if anyone hasn't completed it please do.

The TRT has not yet decided on when to release all of the results. It will most likely be at or toward the end of this season. We are getting some good info.

Thanks for asking!!
PimpShackDave
Any idea when they're going to cap the survey and start analyzing the results? Will that info go public right away, or do you guys mull it over a bit first and offer comments when you release the results?

Dave, unfortunately we haven't got that far in our discussions about the final results of the survey. The TRT has been reviewing the results since the survey was started.

My personal opinion is that this survey will have served its purpose with the end of the season and a new one will be needed in the future. I hope we will release the results very soon.

Thanks.

Soon. Release to be announced at the June 7th TRT meeting.
LoBuck
The Dune Users Survey has been closed. The TRT and the BLM will be reviewing the results and should have them ready for release at www.isdratrt.org soon.

Many Thanks to those of you that participated!

No results yet on the site...what does it take to make a dumpster coyote proof though? Can the coyotes climb the ladders to get in or something?
