Some of the other recent threads in this section set me to thinkin', and that's a dangerous thing. One was the "drags" thread and the other was the statement that less than 1% of the duners belong to the ASA and participate on the bbs's. Would it be feasable to ask the BLM if an informational pamphlet could be included with every season pass that is sold? This pamphlet could include a list of rules, an article emphasising safety at "the drags", a small blurb about environmental blah blah, and a listing of the various sand orgs and how to get info from them and to encourage them to utilize the bbs's for much more immediate information than any newsletter can provide.

This would get into maybe 20%-30% of the duners hands, and certainly into the most frequent users. Of course there's no guarantee that the purchaser would read it, but it might be a step.

This is something they do at pismo when you go in the gate, and I don't remember anything like this last year when we got our pass. So, this is certainly not original..but maybe worth discussing.

It's actually a great idea that has come up from time to time.

The problem is, the closure groups get all excitable if a leaflet or pamphlet or informational item is handed out by a ranger if it is produced by an access organization. That's even if the document in question is good for the health of the dune system. No, I'm not kidding.

But... there is nothing that precludes someone from the duning community from handing out said document. The problem there is, getting the volunteers to commit to the task.

Bob-there are duner info bags that are have been passed out on some of the major weekends, usually as people are pulling in at Gecko and the washes. The bags had to be stuffed very carefully, as all literature had to be pre-approved by the BLM and could not mention the orgs icon_sad.gif
Being a relative newbie, you may not have understood what a big step it was when the first brochure came out with an orgs name (the ASA) on it along with the BLM's. There were also dozens of volunteers who would spend time on their weekends at the dunes to walk camp to camp and hand out these bags. Two and 3 seasons ago I know there were alot of people doing this, unfortunately, as time went on and the same small group of people were doing all the work (getting the copies made, picking up supplies to stuff bags, stuffing bags, getting the bags to volunteers to distribute and the actual distribution of bags), I think it has just gone by the wayside as those people got pulled into other projects. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are still those few, tireless, absolutely awesome volunteers who are still doing this (does the code name "SANDUNERS" ring a bell? icon_wink.gif) and I'm sure they could use any help anyone is able to give towards the efforts of informing and mobilizing other duners.

Vicki, IIRC (and this was from a couple years back so maybe I don't icon_wink.gif) I do believe that there was some sort of "rule" (not sure if it was a rule, law, whatever) that DID preclude duners from passing out info without the BLM's ok.

I've got about 10 to 15 bags setting in a closet waiting to go to the dunes to spread the word. They will have a new ASA Dunes Safety Brochure in them soon.

Hey, lookie here Bob: http://www.americansandassociation.org/committees/index.html

Possibly... but I haven't heard that before.

I would think that courtesy/protocol would of course mandate that any user group wanting to share space at the gate (so to speak) should at least get the nod from the BLM icon_cool.gif

But if you know if a specific rule prohibiting John Q. Citizen from passing out literature on public lands I sure would be interested.

gee..thanks for the suggestion..icon_smile.gif Seriously, I do have the "itch" to pitch in and help out, and while I will most likely step up to the plate, right now, due to about 1,000 things going on in my life, I honestly don't have the time to do even a half azzed job. So, until I can perform in an acceptable manner, I will not take a "spot" in place of someone who might. I've been down that road before, and it's not a good one..icon_wink.gif

I knew my "idea" wasn't too original..glad to hear it's been at least tried. It's a shame that the blm won't allow the org's to be included. I wouldn't be offended if the cbd wanted to give me a flyer on the way in...I could always use something to use to start the campfire...icon_wink.gif

In part it depends on where/how you get your pass.

When I bought mine at the SSSS the past two years I was given a number of flyers and pamphlets by the BLM including one which had a list of rules.

A few years ago when I actually drove down Gecko on a major (halloween) weekend I was also given a bag full of literature by the BLM even though I already had my pass.

Problem is even if you give people literature there's no way to make sure they actually look at it. That weekend I saw quite a few of those flyers the BLM was handing out being used to start fires and tossed in the trash...by people who didn't even know there were closures that had been in place for over a year at the time. I spent a couple hours around the campfire with people I had never met before filling them in on what had happened and how to get involved in fighting it.

Probably got more info out that way than the BLM did total with all the flyers they handed out.

I'd say one of the best things that EVERYONE can do is to talk to your "camp neighbors" each trip. You'll meet a lot of interesting people, probably make some new lifelong friends, and you'll help get the word out. It's not hard and if you go over with a small cooler of drinks to share making friends is pretty easy. Or you can do it our way - just build a BIG campfire, tends to attract a lot of cold people with small fires and they'll galdly sit around and listen just for the chance to warm up icon_biggrin.gif

Actually its not the BLM that have an issue with handing out flyers. Its the enviro's.

In December of 2002 the enviro's said that there should be one of them with one of us when we did camp to camp hand outs to remind everyone that the closure were still in place. They wanted to make sure we were giving the true story. We said OK, no problem, here's the date. We will be meeting at XYZ at xx o'clock.

Vicki will remember this one I'm sure. Vicki and Chuck Mobley were "leads" for our side in the North. Jerry Seaver and I were the "leads" in the South. Cricket and Greg Gorman were "leads" at Ogilby. Guess what, our side was there they weren't. Boy, were we surprised. Yeah, right. rolleyes.gif DP & the CDB were the objectors.

Just when you think you've heard it all. Greg Hall was handing out flyers off Gecko Road. He had driven down specifically to hand out flyers, wasn't even duning that day. He was "asked" to leave by the folks at Robbie Gordon's camp. They didn't need to be informed. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Thanks dear,,, icon_biggrin.gif

But it takes MANY to make any project work correctly in an ALL Volunteer organization. Bob I understand completely,,, I like your honesty,,,never raise your hand if your NOT going to do it... talk is great but,,, talking doesn't get the job done and only leaves others thinking the job IS getting taken care of... icon_wink.gif

We had a conference call for the ASA Business Sponsor committee for the first time last night, 6 of 9 members were able to make the hour call. The combined years of duning at G was well over 100!!! icon_cool.gif Not too many people HAVE the time to commit,,, one reason that committees are needed to spread the load out. Each committee member took on a task, each task will take about an hour or so a week. If ANYONE tells me that they can't spare an hour a week for the DUNES,,, they are a _________ icon_wink.gif

If you want, join a committee and make the difference (Any ORG) or just keep 25chatter.gif here for HOURS at a time and don't 25argue.gif later about SOMEONE who is doing something you thought should be done differently... icon_wink.gif

Volunteers welcome,,,well leave the light on for ya,,, tongue.gif

Ah yes, I remember it well. SSSS 2002. icon_wink.gif

I say: You know Jim, I really want to get more involved, I just don't know how much of a commitment I can make. I don't want to over promise.

Jim says: Hey Glenn, we understand that. You only need to do as much as you can, no more. Hey, even an hour a day. We'll take what we can get.

I say: OK, sounds good, I'll let you know next week what I can commit to.

... one week later I'm the vice-chair of the ASA Communications Committee. Boy was I worried. Found out later that was the easy volunteer job. Many more tasks followed, still are. I'm lovin it.

Thanks Jim. I really mean that. I needed that nudge. No matter what, there is no way that I will ever be able to match what you have done.

Beachhead, just an hour a week. We'll take what we can get. icon_biggrin.gif

I'd love to pass out flyers to fellow duners as they enter the dunes!

Had this idea years ago, but didn't know where/who/when/how to get this started..... glad to see someone else has the same thoughts as I ....

Hey Frog,

That committee chair is OPEN and needs a volunteer! How about contacting the ASA BOD and volunteer? It's easy to do, send them an email and they'll put you in contact with whom ever you need. Ask them any and all questions you have. You'll get answers.

Or, you can send SANDUNERS a pm and he'll call you (like he did me!) and he can tell you what to do to get started.

JUMP ON IN!!!! It doesn't hurt!

Another man at the ASA that will put you to work is Bob Mason. He's got more projects going than anyone I know. We always can use help, from simple things like taking newsletters to shops, handing out flyers, phone calls to the harder stuff like website work and BOD work.

There's room for you.

That depends... there are some print shops that will donate the flyers, other people work for companies that will donate the copier if they bring the paper.

QUOTE

As much (or as little) as you want to dedicate. That can be anywhere from an hour or two walking camp to camp or a whole afternoon/evening at Olds or Comp. The amount of time is up to you.

Sand related business are great because, of course, sand-related people frequent them. But in my humble opinion, the bigger bang for the buck is in the one-on-one at the dunes.

Kids are especially great at this because people may be rude to a grownup but never to a future-generation duner. And patience? That's the name of the game no matter what the age... and everyone has commitments; there's plenty to do that will fit around them. icon_cool.gif

I work for a print shop. I can get plenty of paper, maybe even have a few things printed. I'll do what I can to help out.
