Full Version: Volunteer Sign-up Sheets, What's The Significance?
GlamisDunes.com > Sand Community Issues > Glamis Issues

There's been some talk of the sign-up sheets from the MLK clean-up either being mis-handled or lost. Vicki asserts she has sent them in twice:

Those numbers and sheets have been sent to the BLM. Twice now, the second time in response to Neil Hamada's request of last week. Where did the first set go? Who the heck knows... obviously not the BLM.

My question is; what is the significance of these sheets? Why do we care? We go to these clean-ups to clean the dunes, what benefit is it to us to provide documentation to the BLM proving volunteer hours?

The dunes get cleaned, don't they?
The Pastor
As I understand it sign up sheets are used by the BLM in some administrative fashion. There was talk about money or credits or some such.
Typical Governmental stuff. Something along the lines of, "the more provable volunteers you have, the more money you are eligible for."

I'm sure someone else knows more then I do.

Not sure how it is meaningfull at this point, though.

I've spent considerable time working on volunteer projects both with BLM and the Forest Service. Perhaps I can shed some light on the topic here.

When one participates in a volunteer event on public lands, the "sign-up" sheets are used for three basic purposes. (1) A count of individuals who volunteered to comply with volunteer mandates from Executive Orders and agency regulations, such as the "Take Pride in America" program established by the late President Reagan. (2) A record of volunteer work to comply with verification of the tax-deductible expenses allowed by the IRS. (3) A record of attendance for "volunteer compensation" (for a lack of the correct term at this moment) if indeed a volunteer was injured during the volunteer event.

Its nice to see you posting here Bob on the best damn dune forum on the internet. icon_wink.gif

Who knows. But it's especially amusing since this was the first year that sign up sheets were even used, and they were used in both the north and south dunes cleanups. icon_biggrin.gif

Anyway, it was quite a success, even according to leaders of other access organizations!

The number of bags used was what floored me. We had asked Kawasaki for "just a little extra" since we had the signups at the washes too and they really came through with a lot more than just a little extra tongue.gif

We had 7500 going in, ran out at the registration table so we started handing out BLM bags (don't know how many), and when all the trucks came back in they came back with somewhere around 1000 Kawasaki bags.  That means somewhere around 6500-plus bags were out there.  Most excellent.

6500 is a LOT of bags! Okay, some of the little kids didn't fill them up all the way but still, that's pretty impressive.

And yes, this year we will have the registration at the washes again and I think the vendor flats area was also chosen.

Minor correction. It may have been the first year they were used at the North dunes but they've been used at the South since the first south dunes cleanup. Lynn and I discussed how to deal with them on more than one occasion since he had been in charge of them in the past.

Thank you Jason. I was passing on what I had been told, but apparently that was incorrect.

In my opinion ,what makes them so important, Is when all my friends and family did'nt want to sign up (they wanted to just go pick up trash) I told them we would be getting some type of credit/volunteer hours credit for doing so. I hope this sign up sheet snafu gets cleared up soon!!

Vicki ,If I am not mistaken the Dunes clean up hours were part of John Stewarts Volunteer program. Some big deal presented to the Land managers recognizing Off Roaders volunteer hours. I dont remember the details, If you do maybe you can expand on it.

How many Volunteer hours were credited to the 7th annual dunes clean up presented by DUNERS?

Grant,,, how dare you ask a DIRECT question!!! What are you thinking... laughing.gif

(( Lets see, a direct question like the one above would require an answer with a number attached. ))

A Clue: Someone might need to look UNDER their keyboard as SO MANY times things in the past have found there way under there... icon_biggrin.gif

Just to re-fresh who said what on this issue:
QUOTE ("EBCMIKE")

You do know that the BLM gets $$$ for volunteer hours, which they derive from the sign up sheets and release forms....DONT YOU??

All you are doing by not FOLLOWING the rules is cheating yourself and others!  All your clean up efforts....and the duning community gets nothing for it because you were not fully informed.....sad, just plain sad...

QUOTE ("Tom Simrak")
Mike, good point and knowing this to be true, DUNERs has made it a point that at the next cleanup, there will be a sign up sheet. Not just so the BLM can get their due, but so we can have an accurate accounting of the number of volunteers. How that could have ever been missed before is unknown to me.

OK, so Grants question is HOW MANY HOURS?
My question is HOW MANY VOLUNTEERS?
We know HOW many Bags... icon_wink.gif
Thank You...

?? What is "John Stewart's volunteer program?" I don't know what you are referring to.

I'll write and ask him.

The volunteer sign up sheets were/are important to this effort and DUNERS did the right thing by having people sign up. This was the first time for the large cleanup effort and we were worried about inconveniencing the participants. The cleanup volunteers were fantastic and moved people through in record time though, even in spite of the signups.

As for how many hours and how many volunteers, I'll get those totals for you today. Silly me, it's not something I keep at the top of my head.

It's amusing to me (and others) that after all those years of NO sign up sheets (and apparently the BLM muddled along just fine), suddenly this is a very important issue, obviously because DUNERS is involved. How silly.

It's a simple matter of questioning the clean up leader. icon_biggrin.gif

Vicki , were you able to get those totals ,and what did you hear from John Stewart?

Yep. Number of volunteers: 2472; number of volunteer hours: 10488.

The number of hours people put down varied from 3 to 8, but most people just put down 4 hours since they were there from about 9:00-1:00. The "core" volunteers who actually worked the cleanup itself put in something like 700 hours between them. wub.gif

Several people suggested that we add at least another 500-600 volunteers for those who hadn't bothered to sign up. That would be an additional 2000-2400 volunteer hours, so I'm sorry they didn't sign up but no, we didn't add them... we didn't want to go back to the days where guesswork was relied on. Instead, we resolved to make a stronger effort at getting them on the books for the next one. icon_ninja.gif

And yes, I asked John what you were referring to and he said you may be talking about a Take Pride in America Campaign. He said there is a push to collect volunteer hours and that he is “trying to make it easy by collecting numbers that people submit to BLM and FS and build a ‘recreation’ count.”

I also asked John if there was anything he needed from me and he said he’d be sending out an email to collect volunteer numbers... he was in the middle of cleaning out 500 or so emails he'd received while being out of town blink.gif

The PRIDE AMERICA program looks great. Why aren't any of the orgs. a
Charter Partner ??? I only saw one atv group on the list...

That was a great clean up , both south and Glamis, but Glamis was wonderful and
Jodee and I look forward to working it again in January.

I hope all those numbers make a difference, it sure caused a lot of greef.....

No response yet from Take Pride In America. There is a phone number listed so maybe I'll give that a try today.

Okay, here's the scoop...

Becoming a part of the Take Pride In America campaign is as easy as all volunteer work... just raise your hand icon_biggrin.gif

What happens now is, we will be placed in their database and will be notified of volunteer opportunities in our area. Also, Take Pride In America will be notified of our volunteer opportunities. It's a very cooperative effort.

Not only is the volunteerism the right thing to do, but there are additional incentives for working with TPIA, including "perks" from various corporations as their way of saying thank you to the volunteers. I don't have the details on that... it was mentioned as a side note. But it sounded like a cool idea and I'll be receiving an information packet that will have more details.

The term "Charter Partners" is supposed to be used to differentiate between those volunteer partner organizations that have been with the Take Pride In America campaign since the beginning versus those that are still joining up... just a nice little way of showing respect for those that have been there for the "long haul." The website will be changing soon and the partner list will include all partners, with an asterisk next to those that have been there from the get-go.

All in all, the two people I spoke to seemed friendly, eager and happy to answer my questions and the campaign sounds like an excellent program. I very much look forward to working with them rollsmile.gif
