I'm selling a vw turbo 2 seat buggy and I'm not sure what engine any tranny I'm have. Need to find a shop in SD that I can take it to to help me figure it out. Maybe a a dyno run also. I need to get rid of this ASAP.
Thanks.

I took it to them when i first bought it. They tuned it for me. It's to far from me without a trailer or tow vehicle. I was looking for something a lil closer so i can have a friend haul it for me.

pretty hard to figure out the motor size unless you pull the heads, it is the only way. pull the head and measure the piston size and how far the piston travels.

I wish i knew how to do that. I'm willing to pay someone (if its not to much) to that for me. When i purchased this i was givin a list if what was in it, I also remember it being a built rancho tranny. The price I'm asking is what the motor and tranny should be worth alone. But without knowing I can't give buyers legitimate answers.
Thanks for the replys.

I had a jsc frame I think you can pull the head without pulling the motor, If you do pull the motor I would put a new set of bearings and rings and sell it as a fresh motor, that might make a buyer feel secure about the sale. if not sure of the size just let the buyer feel the power and tell him the truth that you just dont know.

Thanks for the help, this lil thing pulls btw and only runs on 110 octane.

Looks like a CarCraft turbo kit. My CarCraft turbo kit receipt is for $2500+ and that was about ten years ago. Engine size is like inches of travel. Its just a number and its all about the complete package. Just tell a potential buyer that it will pull 4th gear up Olds.

Unfortunately there is no way of telling engine size without pulling the motor down. Pulling a head will tell you piston size but you still dont know the crank size. The tranny may have a tag on it somewhere to tell you whats in it but other than that your pretty much out of luck there. If selling cheap enough, people wont care if you dont know the motor size or tranny specs.

What about finding displacement the easy way, use the liquid in the cylinder method, I prefer 90wt. But this way will not tell yout
The quality of the internals.

Not trying to be a smart azz or maybe im an idiot but how will oil in the cylinder tell you the displacement? Ive heard of oil in the head to find out the cc's of the head but how do you figure out displacement? So you figure out you have 94mm pistons. How do you figure out the stroke on the crank? Also knowing its a type 1 transaxle doesnt tell you what the internals are. Is it all stock or does it have close ratio gears? Back in the day the gears to have were FTC i believe. I just say if you dont know dont guess. It wont be worth the money you will spend tearing things down.

To find out displacement using liquid is pretty easy, you run the piston all the way to bdc then fill all the way to the brim thru a hose in were the spark plug would go (compression checking hose with core removed works good). Then slowly rotate to TDC while filling a graduated beaker. That will tell you the displacement.

you can tell if there are 94mm cylinders on the motor by looking at the outside of the barrel, look at them from under the motor, the base of the cylinder (the side against the case) will have almost no fins, and when they fly cut the heads to fit the 94mm barrels it will cut into head stud holes in the head just a tad bit. For the stroke take a wire hanger and cut a 10" strait piece, put the motor at TDC remove a spark plug and use the wire to measure how far the piston moves while you turn the crank by hand.

I am guessing the fella asking the questions is not too mechanical, so even though you guys have great suggestions for figuring out displacement, I don't see him pulling a head and measuring.

That motor is probably a bigger VW, (2276, 2332), we have the side draft turbo from Car Craft and they are not cheap. I can't see anyone in a buggy dropping that coin on a 1600. My advice to the seller is if you are willing to pay someone that is reputable to figure out what motor/trans that you have, be sure to check comparable prices on motors etc on thesamba.com -- the trans prob not worth alot on it's own but these big VW motors, when built correctly are worth more than you may think.
Best of luck! Light car + big VW=lots of fun!
