Vhf is what people usually run

I talked to some of our avionics folks here at work and in the airplane world UHF is better higher freq. and does not need a line of sight or gets blocked by obsticles and travels further, I will call PCI later and get there thoughts and see if the UHF radio can be set-up to talk to a VHF radio.

I dont think it can because of the range of the frequency , but i am no expert . pm socaldmax he sells the radios and knows his stuff . also for the intercom and headset deal i like rugged ,i have had both pci and rugged .also i can talk from vendor row to gecko with no problems , we really dont usually need to talk much farther tha that anyway . jmho .tim

VHF and UHF radios don't talk to each other. VHF just means a range of frequencies in the 140-150 MHz range, maybe more. UHF freq range is in the 400mhz range.

I have a new Icom F5021, 50 watt. Its a nice, well built, excellent audio. We programmed it with 126 race Freqs.

I should add if you want to use UHF and don't need to talk to strangers then get UHF. You will have to make sure everyone in your group has the same opinions. There are dual band ham radios that can talk on both bands. It's just a radio that can transmit on either range but not both at the same time.

VHF covers the frequency range for 30 to 300 MHz. UHF covers from 300 MHz to 3000 MHz (3 GHz). They don't overlap and will not communicate to each other.

For aviation use, UHF is better, but for terrestrial use, VHF works out better. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength and more directional it is, more "line of sight."

Most of the people that I know of are using VHF for their race radio. Actually, I don't know anyone who is using UHF, other than a couple using dual bands to talk to their friends who are still clinging to their FRS radios.
