The solution is don't go to Mexico . As far as I am concerned they can keep their corrupt country . If we don't support the tourism they cant exploit us . Tim

We went down to skate a park they have in Tijuana and got the same treatment...
They told us we ran a red light and were under arrest... they had us follow them to the station and then they stopped a few blocks away and emptied our wallets..

Funny side note..
Half of us were like "turn around and haul azz, eff these guys"...
That would have been interesting... laughing.gif

So this is a video of Mexican cops demanding a bribe from a gringo.

I'd be more surprised if they didn't.

I have heard from friends that live down there to say..Ok, take me to the police station! I'll follow you there...
If there is a ticket given...say running a stop sign for example, fee $8.00 Yes, eight dollars!

Should have just gone to the station! Hard to think that way, cause you don't know what really is gonna happen...but all those guys out on the streets are corrupt and looking for some quick easy money.
If they take you to the station they actually might have to do work. they probably would have let you go if you got to the parking lot of the station!

One pulled me over in Cancun (actually Playa del Carmen) some time ago. Driving a white Jeep minus the top with a big ass "AVIS" on the side of it, at night in a non-tourist part of town, with a blonde in the passenger seat made me an easy target I guess. He walked up and claimed I made an illegal turn "over there somewhere." I got tired of his broken English when he was trying to explain that I could either go with him to the station, or just take care of the fine right there. Kinda surprised him with better Spanish than his own. I demanded to be taken to the station so I could have a receipt for the infraction AFTER he could explain to his boss where I made an illegal turn and where it was posted that I couldn't turn. The dude was annoyed and must have been on his way home cuz his shirt was un-tucked and he was on foot (yeah, he pulled me over with a effin whistle). Told me to have a good night and walked away. Although my wife speaks fluent Spanish, she isn't Mexican and was scared out of her mind. I completely forgot it was her first trip and didn't warn her it might happen. She was convinced we were spending the night in a Mexican jail, and I was planning to propose that night!

Angel, Seriously? your just yanking our chain, right? you can't seriously compare our LEOs with the Mexican Police, can you? Corruption is the rule down South and the rare exception in the US (that includes every south and Central American country I've been in, with Mexico far worse than any other). I know that we disagree on a variety of issues, mainly American law enforcement, and I will concede that you have seen a different side of it, in your experiences, that have formed your opinion, but seriously, you seem to have such an extreme opinion that seems to force you to make false statements, as those above. If you were just yanking our chain, and you may have been as you ended the first paragraph with the ole "LOL"

Seriously though, you will never be accepted as serious until you stop making these kind of blanket inflammatory statements, true some LEOs are corrupt, True some LEOs use excessive fore, true some Caucasians are racists, as are some latinos, some asians, some native Americans and the list goes on.

I truly hope that we can come closer in our opinions, I have made some concessions, largely in part to you, I recognized, in myself some bias that I thought I had been free of, but Hell, we all need a reminder occasionally.

iI would like to completely dispel the statement "that happens in every country" and assert that statement is ludicrous . I would like you show me some information that shows US law enforcement targets people from another country and shakes them down for personal profit . In this thread alone several people have stated they have had personal experience with this very same conduct by Mexican authorities . I would venture to say that most people who frequent Mexico could say either they or someone they know has had this happen . I doubt you could say the same is true for foreigners visiting the USA . It is a consistent theme in Mexican law enforcement to the extent it is almost policy . it's quite clear most authorities look the other way when their officers conduct themselves this way . can you assert that's true in the USA ? Are you serious Tim ? The point is corruption under color of law. But if youd like one example of shakedown for money . I think this article shows that. Stealing money and guns etc with a warrant. Then spending the money . These guys just got caught and im sure it happens everyday . He pleaded guilty this week.

OAKLAND -- In the first of several expected guilty pleas involving rampant corruption in an elite Contra Costa County vice squad, a former San Ramon police officer was taken into federal custody Thursday after admitting to nine felonies and misdemeanors.

Louis Lombardi, a 39-year-old Discovery Bay resident, admitted to stealing at least $40,000 in cash, as well as guns, jewelry and other property, while executing search warrants as a police officer and as an agent for the Central Contra Costa Narcotics Enforcement Team, assistant U.S. attorney Hartley West told a federal magistrate. Of the four officers charged in connection with the scandal, Lombardi is the first to take a plea deal. His former vice squad commander, Norman Wielsch, and former private investigator Christopher Butler have given lengthy confessions to prosecutors and are expected to follow.

I used to go to Mexico about twice a month when I was in H.S. to surf. 3-4 blonde kids in a bug with boards on top made us easy targets for the running the stop sign that didn't exist, speeding even though I'm going slower than the speed limit etc. I honestly don't think we ever made it through a whole weekend without getting pulled over for a shakedown. Usually 2-3 times was the norm. We would hide our money in different spots in the car so that we never had more than about $20 in our pocket at any time.
On a different note. I was talking to a couple workers from Guatemala that are illegals, and they said that by far, the scariest part of their "journy" to the US was crossing Mexico, because the law enforcement was extremely racist towards any of the other Latin immigrants. Apparently they don't like illegals coming to Mex and "taking" the jobs of Mexicans either!

I can't speak for everybody else, but please don't take my testimony to mean that ALL Mexican police are corrupt. It is probably true that many of them are, but I have also had some good experiences. As a matter of fact, I've probably been back to Mexico (all over the place) a half dozen times after my encounter and never had to deal with it again.

Tourist towns tend to have cleaner-cut cops to make sure that tourists keep wanting to come back.

UMMM ,yes I am serious . how can you compare a few rogue officers to a common practice ? I ask the question " are you serious " ? Again as I stated ,show me something that it is common practice. I can simplify this for you , if I make a statement that "men are taller than women " is it true ? the answer to person with common sense would be "yes" , but is true in every case ? The answer is no , but as a general rule it is accurate vastly more than it is inaccurate . So with that said I still contest that this happens in Mexico as a common practice and is not common practice in the USA . Besides the obvious fact that these rogue officers were not targeting foreigners , the entire comparison is completely ludicrous . This was a vain attempt top grasp a straw . The USA has the highest standards in North America and probably the world for it's officers . to compare themto the common criminals you see in that video is insulting . Tim

Couldn't agree more and more likely to meet the corrupt ones in the border towns, for every corrupt one I have met, I have had ten-fifteen positive contacts, I have found that when I have introduced myself and began a conversation that it generally starts with the Mexican LEO reserved, but usually they loosen up and it's a positive/pleasant contact, still not very good odds, I just try to avoid the border town cops.

Wow Nice cops even shook his hand. You wont find one here who does. They didnt even draw there guns. Racists bastards. I need to get my speakers louder to see what they were actually saying .lol

moral of the story they are all corrupt no matter what country the still need better training.

Tim

Of course Im yaking the chain man!!!! Im a true smart ass peace.gif Im not some hippy protester . peace.gif I know for a fact Daddy got a gun might shake my hand and doen not seem corrupt

I thought so, and am damn glad to have it confirmed, I really do look forward to meeting you. Tim
