I am pretty sure I can find the washes, I just dont want something stupid to happen and the car break with me being between gordons and the washes and nobody around to help, that would be a long tow back.

that would be cool to get a little group to run up there, maybe dune through patton valley then go up the east side of the dunes, hit china wall, then through the dunes to the washes, could be a fun ride, but I havent been that way before so I dont want to lead, I am still going to be a rookie at this driving thing, been about 4 years since I had a rail. I know RIPSTER would go too, and maybe another buggy if they decide to camp with us.

Nov 28 2004, 04:04 PM
Lucky, well the car wasnt there because we ran into some delays, so you didnt miss much, I just got home a few minutes ago and it was a fun trip.
I saw JHeitsman, nobuggybob, MURPH, of course Justin with the snake car, we camped with Trader4Less, and I saw a few other cars, but cant remember the screen names that went with them
Hope all your guys' trips were as good as mine, no major injuries in our camp, and I didnt see any at all, so that was a definate good thing.

Thought that was you. I saw a camp a little ways west of us with two different colored flashers that I thought may be you - until I remembered you were going to be camped south of I-8...and when I went looking for it I couldn't find it anyway.
You should have stopped by, the worlds larest marshmallow stick worked well:

Of course with the wood we had it was hard NOT to have a HOT fire:

We also had a reporter from the Sun in our camp who had a great time, she had come out to a Duner Dinner earlier in the year and gone for a ride in Matt's rail but didn't get to stay very long. She wrote
this story earlier in the week and then made it out to our camp about 2AM Friday night. She had a blast and I've got a feeling she may become a regular in our group .

Jason, I was going to stop but I wanted to get back to camp before dark, and the manx was running a bit off, it started to have a misfire when I was coming down the hill from the drags, #3 cylinder isnt firing right, hopefully it is something stupid like a loose plug or bad wire, I will look at it tomorrow when I have time, glad you guys had a good trip, I am going to try and get out there in 2 weeks, but its looking like I wont make it out until after Xmas, unless I do a day trip to take delivery of the new car, its all up in the air.

Check the valve adjustment?
I had some bad backfires from my Manx and then noticed that the cylinder tins on #4 were black - took a closer look and realized that the header stud that had pulled out and I replaced with a bolt was coming loose. Snugged it up and no more popping

Now it's time for some serious Manx Maintance. I ment to do a valve adjustment before this trip but ran out of time. Now I have to clean all the sand and oil mist off first...oh well, got lots of simple green and engine degreaser so at least it will all be nice and shiny again when I'm done!
The new auxiliary tank is sweet too - looks like it was ment to go with the car! Most people who saw it this weekend assumed it was the only tank - when they found out I also have the stock tank they all wondered how many months I go between fill-ups

Cool article, Jason! Couldn't imagine getting press like that out here...

It takes effort. We've been taking various people from the Sun out with us for almost 6 years now. Most of them have a pre-conception of what it will be like thanks to the CBD's misinformation and constant barrage of sky is falling press releases. They're almost always shocked when they get out there and see what it's really like for themselves.
"Unfortunatly" reporter turn-over at the sun is pretty high so we're always having to take new ones out and show them the dunes
The husband of the publisher has been asking to come out with us for awhile now. He did a story for their winter visitor guide on how important things like GPSes can be...and while he incorrectly attribuited Banshee Bob's story to me it was still a very good article on how to have a safe time in the desert. Hopefully he'll get to come out soon with us...he's pretty good with a camera (he's also the head photo-editor at the sun) and I'd love to have him get some action shots of us

Start making calls to your local paper and inviting them out. It can be a lot of fun showing them around and letting them experience the joys of the dunes first hand and it usually does wonders for how fair the reporting is afterwards.
