![]() ![]() Press Release – American Sand Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE American Sand Association PMB 108 1911 Foothill Blvd La Verne, CA 91750 CONTACT: Grant George, ASA President Greg Gorman, ASA Chairman of the Board DATE: December 7, 2004, La Verne CA Today the American Sand Association met with the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) to discuss management options at The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA). Currently, there is a long established 26,500-acre wilderness area that is part of the ISDRA. In 1974 when established by Congress, this wilderness, the size of Manhattan, was intended to be the environmental mitigation for off road activities in the rest of the dunes at the ISDRA in perpetuity. All the environmental organizations signed on at that time. Since then, The CBD, a relative newcomer, has used litigation to TEMPORARILY close an additional 49,000 acres at the ISDRA. As agreed by the off road community and the CBD, these closures are TEMPORARY until a new Area Management Plan is adopted and the Fish and Wildlife Service determines that the new plan will not harm the species that live in the dunes. The plan was created with months of public input from all sides and represents a balanced approach to recreation management at the Dunes. Now that the release of the new plan seems imminent, the CBD is crying foul in that they want the closures to become permanent asking the ASA to agree to them. The CBD offered to stop filing lawsuits and seeking additional closures if the ASA would agree to make the current TEMPORARY closures permanent. Considering that most of the sand dunes in America—including the massive Wilderness Area at the ISDRA—are closed to vehicular traffic, the ASA believes that there are adequate dunes closed to protect species and that the anti-access organizations just cannot have it all and the ASA therefore cannot accept or agree to these conditions. About the American Sand Association The American Sand Association is a grass-roots, 501c(4) non-profit organization of sand sports enthusiasts. The ASA works hand-in-hand with other groups who also fight for multiple-use access to sand areas. The ASA seeks to improve OHV safety and promote responsible land use. The ASA is an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. We rely on the financial support of sand-sport enthusiasts and small businesses. Most of our members are family-oriented, have a rich family history going back for generations enjoying the sand sport; and most have a significant financial investment in their equipment and gear.
