Anyone have an idea what a good price on an '05 400 EX would be? We are looking at possibly buying 2 new ones for our boys for Xmas.
Thanks for any help

So 5495 OTD each isn't bad....
Not much less than the 450's but don't you think that'd be to much bike for them?
Dunegoat
Dec 13 2004, 11:19 AM
you can always tune them down if it is. But wouldn't you rather have a bike they could grow into rather than one that they would out grow?
Just a suggestion. The 400ex is an allright bike don't get me wrong. I was just thinking with all the new four stroke technology the 450 would be the way to go. IMO.

Call Az Honda in Tucson they will give you a great OTD price on the phone. Also 400ex's have not chaged AT ALL since 99 other than BNG (bold new grapics). Those things are a dime a dozen in the trader for under 4k each, usually with pipes and paddles already. Can easily work people with cash in hand, they are all selling them to get 450's. I sold my 2000 for 3750 with over 3k in bolt on parts, paddles, ramp, everything you could really do to one. Nothing really goes wrong with them eaither I never had to do anything but adjust the chain and change oil, and I rode the eff out of the one we had. Might as well save the $$ your kids will want 2 wheelers anyway once they realize quads are for girls

Dec 13 2004, 12:44 PM
Actually they already want 2 wheelers.....we (or at least hubby) just aren't psychologically ready for them to have them yet

No cash in hand right now....we've spent a ton of $$$$$ the last two months going to G. so much and on the rails. I could probably come up with enough to buy one (used) bike in cash right now and selling the other 2 would give me enough to buy the other, but one is out in G. (til New Years at least when we have a chance to bring it home) and that would take some time (listing etc.) also. The thought was to get this done for Xmas.
One other thing Tony-the 2005's now have reverse

$12,166 OTD for 2 450's...
Couple questions-
What about the kickstart? We do not want to be getting out of the car repeatedly to be starting these for them and they are just starting to learn to ride without an automatic shift (they have Polaris' now). Do you guys think they are going to be able to get these started?
No reverse on the 450's-I don't think it's a biggie....what do you guys think?
Thanks for the help guys

Stick with used 400's

450's are not for begginers Bukit-head will end up hurting himself on the dam thing anyways

OK....got 6-7 K I can borrow for the next 6 weeks?
Everything they want for Xmas is sold out (I'm not a big shopper anyway) so I'm sorta in a bind

Jamie says you're just jealous cuz it'd be a bigger motor than yours...

DG-how would one go about "de-tuning" a 450?

The yamaha has electric start, and they may still be running a $39/month for 24 months deal. Might be another option. As for detuning any quad, just turn the throttle restriction screw in.

So I can get a new quad for $936?

Not really worried about monthly payments etc, just APR and OTD on the purchase itself-they'll be paid for before the 24 months is up.

Apr is 3.9% for those 24 months, and 9.9% after that. OTD price is somewhere areound $6900 at la cycle.

I was talking about the 450. they are a very forgiving ride. Before last xmas I had never been to the desert. Never rode a quad, dirtbike, jetski, anything. Started on my yfz. I have had no problems learning on it. So, if your kids have been riding, then it should not be a problem at all. If power is a problem, turn the throttle screw in until they are ready. Better to spend a little more now IMHO. However, there is nothing at all wrong with a 400ex, or z400. The yfz is just a faster quad with a little better suspension. Most people wouldn't "grow out" of one very fast.

$6900 for the 450? I'm getting an OTD price of $6050 on them....maybe I will just buy the 450's....

Seriously, if I can make the 450's work for the boys that would be the only thing I'd buy NEW. My only concern is the kickstart. Does anyone know who has one ?
Just wondering how hard it is to restart after the first start in the AM (that one will be easy to take care of before we get into our cars)

Julie, if it were me I would get two used 400ex’s. You can get two used ones in great shape for around $6,000. When they are ready for a 450 you can sell the 400’s for about the same amount as you bought them. I would never buy a new 400ex though. You can get a used one and then spend the cash you save on suspension and the engine and make it better than a new one.
Of course I’m personally biased towards the 400ex. Others will say the water cooled 400’s are better but I don’t like the way they handle. But that’s just personal preference.
But I also agree that the sooner you get them on two wheels the better off they’ll be!
I’ll be headed out to my brother’s house for Christmas if you want me to bring the other quad out for you.

julie..
here's a link to lacyclesports atv prices:
http://www.layamaha.com/atv2.htmI'm sure the otd price would be less since you wouldn't have to pay the kalifornia welfare mark up...errr sales tax.
Tough call, but whatever you do, don't tell the dealer that you're getting any of these for a kid under 16..

Were I in your shoes, I'd strongly consider the Suzuki 400. Electric start, reverse (no, it's not really needed, especially for boys!!) and the bike will haul my fat butt anywhere in Glamis, so it will take them a while to outgrow them. The suzuki has a throttle restrictor, so you can start them out slow. And as you can see the 04 is less than the 05 ex 400...a good thing if you're buying two at once..

luvdunin, if those boys can kick a 450 I'll eat my hat. I just had mine out for the first time and it is not an easy machine to kick start. I am 6'3" and around 240lbs and there were times that I had to take a break from kicking it over. Do yourself and your boys a favor and go with one of the bikes that has electric start. Two ar three weekend back I was riding a 400ex and it got me everywhere I wanted to go, I easily kept up with everyone in the group while duning and they are bulletproof.

We've had a number of people express that they feel the 450 is just to much bike for the boys, so it looks like we are between the 400ex and the z400's.
I guess I'll be eating my words about the 450's being the only ones we'd buy new....BH has to keep the bikes running and he wants new for them, so he's at the dealership right now checking them out.
I've heard alot of people saying they like the z's....anyone else want to chime in?

I own a YFZ450 and a 99 400ex. Stick with the 400cc motor group. Some of these guys dont realize that your buying these for kids. I have been recommending the used z400's for fullsized beginner bikes. Thier pretty inexpencive. The motors have a LOT of potential. They come with reverse. Tons of parts and avalibility. The suspension geometry is a pretty close copy of the honda geometry. IF your sure thier going to tear it up I have to say the honda will probubly last longer. Ford_Forgotton will attest to the durability of mine. Lastly if the kids want to grow into 2 wheelers, you won't loose as much money buying used and then selling them to get what they want later. AND thats just simple economics.

IMO for the price they want i'd rather go for the ltz400 i was very close to buying a quad but decided to stick to 3 wheels for now.I have ridden the yfz450 and i can say i was impressed(made me upgrade my stock 250r).but for riding in the dunes i have ridden the 400ex and the ltz also and orefer the ltz for all around riding. If track riding i'd go for the 450s.But i am too old for tracks now.

I don’t think BukitHead realizes the difference between a used simple atv and a used (million things can go wrong) sandrail. Just know going into it that no matter what you would do a top end on them and they will be good as new or even better if you up the cc’s and compression a little. As long as you don’t go so big that you have to re-sleeve the cylinder it is really cheap to do. You cold do a small quick rebuild/tune-up on both for under $1,000.
Just don’t do like I’m doing and turn it into a 5 year project!

I have a 450r and a 400ex. My son is 14 and has no problem with the 400. It is a very flexible bike, responds well to pipe, jetting and filter. Never gives us any trouble, starts every time and has predictable handling and engine response. The 450r has a completely different feel to it. The handling is geared more to an experinced rider, it comes up with just a little throttle and it comes on harder on the top. It is not as comfortable to ride as the 400ex. You could say it is more of a racers bike. Even thought the bike has a kick start it starts pretty easy. Two kicks cold with the choke and one kick hot. I would think that your sons riding expertise would come into play here. If they are already pretty proficient then I would get them the 450r. If not get the 400ex and you will get two to three years before they will want something faster. The 400 is an excellent duner and keeps up with most any quad out there. Bottom line, if it was me I would get the 400 and then move them up in two to three years to the 450r or its replacment. Good luck and I hope this helps in your decision. PS bought all three of my quads from LA cycle over the last four years. Always a good price with little hastle.
