BLM Seeks Nominees for California Desert District Advisory Council

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking nominations for five southern Californians with an interest and knowledge of the
California Desert and its natural resources to serve on the BLM's California Desert District Advisory Council for the 2002-2004
three-year term.

The Council is comprised of 15 members who represent the broad range of public land use interests in the California Desert. The
Council advises BLM California Desert District Manager Tim Salt on policies and programs for approximately 11.5 million acres of
public lands throughout southern California.

"BLM relies on Council members to bring their expertise and knowledge of the California Desert into the decision-making process,"
said Salt. "Each member represents a specific interest category and together the 15 members provide a broad range of representation
on the Council."

The five positions to be filled include two recreation representatives, one representative each for public-at-large, nonrenewable
resources, and wildlife. Council members serve three-year terms and may be nominated for reappointment for an additional three-year
term. Three members (public-at-large, wildlife, and recreation) are eligible for reappointment, and two members (recreation and
non-renewable resources) are completing their second 3-year term and are not eligible for reappointment.

Any group or individual may nominate a qualified person. Individuals also may nominate themselves. Nominees may contact BLM
External Affairs at (909) 697-5220 or write to the address below and request a copy of the nomination form. Nominations must
include the name of the nominee, work and home addresses and phone numbers, fax number, a biographical sketch that includes the
nominee's work and public service record and applicable outside interests that qualify him or her for the position, and the specific
category of interest in which the nominee is best qualified to offer advice to the BLM.

All nominations must be accompanied by letters of reference from represented interests, organizations or elected officials. Nominees
will be evaluated based on their education, training, and knowledge of BLM, the California Desert District, and the issues involving
BLM-administered public lands within southern California.

Advisory Council members are appointed/reappointed by the Secretary of the Interior, generally in late December and/or early
January. The term for the new appointees will begin January 1, 2002.

Nominations for the California Desert District Advisory Council must be received by Thursday, August 31, 2001, and should be sent to
the District Manager, California Desert District, 6221 Box Springs Boulevard, Riverside, CA 92507. For more information contact
Doran Sanchez, BLM External Affairs at (909) 697-5220.

I too am honored that you thought I might be a good represenitive for this board!

I am going to look into this a bit more, though I don't really think I could even come close to passing that selection process!

I am afraid that my knowledge is too limited.
But I'll keep an open mind!

Vor, I think you would be great for this position. This board needs "The Voice of Reason". At the last BLM meeting I attended, one of their council members was obviosly very biased. I wish I had tape recorded her. because she was using nearly exact quotes from things that Dan Paterson had said in his USA Today article. It smelled pretty fishy, if you know what I mean!
I hope that it is her position that is up.
But, no matter who's position is up, you can bet that the CBD is trying to get someone that they know in there.
sha
I agree totally. WE NEED some one on the board that speaks from our point of view. You may think that your knowledge is limited, but it certainly exceeds alot of the rest of us on the board. I think you should go for it!!!
