OK Heres the deal I bought a 2005 Z400 for the wife for Christmas, now when she rides it will most likley just be a cruizer for her but when I get on it I want to be able to rip through the dunes and try and keep up with my buddies on there 450's the best I can. There are just to many choices when comes to picking tire and wheel combo's that my head hurts so I'm hoping you guys can help me out here. I would like to put some razors or mohawks on the front also, any one prefer one or the other? Thanks for you input.

I have an 03 Z400 and can dune just fine with any of the 450's no problem. Drag's are another story but as far as duning, no problem. I am running ITP Sans Stars all around and really like it. Currently I am running 10' Douglas rims with OMF beadlocks and 20' tires. the beadlocks are overkill I know but they are also bulletproof.

are you still running the stock gearing or did you go down to a 13 on the front? The Sand Star fronts are a smoothie or a razor?

They are a double razor. I run the Sand Stars also. I love them. I think they are the best all round tires I've ever ran on any of my bikes.

yep those are the ones I'm running. and I changed my sprockets a few times over the last season to find what I think is the best set up for me.
I went back to a stock 14 front and went up to a 42 rear.

Where abouts do you live? Here in SD, there is a place called Cycle Parts West. They sell them pretty cheap. I don't remember exactly how much I paid for them. I think I was about $200 for Rears w/ black label rims and fronts w/ no rims.

Thanks for the info guys, it really helps. Does $188 for the rears and $160 for fronts sound about right? Those are on douglas wheels also. Also is there big diff. in the 21" and 22" tires for the front?

I think those prices are a little high. As for the size in the fronts; the bigger they are, the more floatation they have. Does that make them work better for turning,

Hustler
Dec 14 2004, 04:13 PM
Cycle Parts West is $165 for the rears and $135 for the fronts and that on blue lables, it's about 10 bucks more for the black labels but they dont have them in stock. Are the black labels worth the extra 10 bucks and the wait?

I say yes, some will say no. I've seen the blues taco from the bike just dropping out of the bed of a truck (not even lifted) in the sand dunes. So what is going to happen if you race through some whoops?

I run sand star fronts with hauler rears on my yfz. I love the sand star fronts, and would not trade them for the world. You will do just fine on the 400 in the dunes. Any of the newer 4 stroke 400+ bikes are great in the dunes. As for rear tires, I ran sand skate II's before my haulers, an they were great for duning. They are very similiar to the itps, only they weigh less, and cost more. the itp's are probably the better buy. The only reason I went to haulers was because of my love for racing. If you mostly dune, with an occasional race, the sand stars are definetly the tire for you.

Black Lable rims in the sand

unless you plan on coming up short on the olds double don't think you need them but it's your bike. Have been running the same set of blues in the front scince 97 and the backs allmost as long I never have bent one rim and Im not afraid of jumping.
One time I got a flat and had to rent a pair of paddles that had Black Lables what a differance it made in performance bike was sluggish felt like the clutch was slipping put the blues back on and

.
The biggest problem with Hauler and you can ask anybody that has fallowed 24V or myself is the roost ,You will not be popular around the campfire

. Oh and the fact that they do tear alot easier than the molded tire.
And for price try Rock Mountain there pretty competitive on price

CMC(California Motorsport center) had them on ITP rims(better than blue label douglas') for $169 for the rears and $129 for the fronts last time I checked.
I have tacoed blue labels before, they are fine as long as you run at least 4 pounds of air in them

I had a bad crash last Feb. the 29th to be exact and I taco'd three out of my four blue label Douglas rims. I still run douglas but now I run Black label with beadlocks and baha rings welded on the inside. They are heavier but to me, worth the piece of mind.

i put sand stars all around on my girlfriends raptor with the itp wheels.
as for my 450r I put skat trak haulers in the rear/8 paddle and skat trak mohawks in front. I love the hawks in front and i personally will only run haulers on my own bikes.
But i must say the sand stars are a good setup.

Thanks for the info Lucky, I'll be out by Ridgecrest over New Years but thanks for the offer. Do the Hauler give more bit then the Sand Stars? I run them on my 250r ATC and love them but then again I have never run any thing else. Do the Sand Stars help turn better? What is the advantage of having a V shaped paddle?
