I hate this time of the year. No more Glamis trips, have to wait until October before my tires feel sand underneath them. I am going to do a couple of river trips on off weekends, and do some trailriding in the Sierras. Help me, I need Glamis relief.

I'm probably going out to the baja 500 in June. Then I'll make a trip to Pismo and the a trip to Oregon Dunes. And then it will be time for Glamis again.

For Memorial weekend I'm heading off to the St. Anthony dunes in Idaho, then stopping by Little Sahara, Utah on the way home. It will be a week-long trip. The following weekend I will be at Pismo, the weekend after that in Vegas for the sand and off-road show, then probably a few trips to the Oregon Dunes. Maybe even visit some other dune areas if I can. You can still dune in the summer, you just have to drive further.

How I'm gonna spend my summer "vacation".
1. Drink beer
2. Do the top end on my 250r.
3. Drink more beer.
4. Work on my hot rod 56 Ford pickup.
5. Drink a little more beer!
6. Get ready for the desert season by drinking more beer!!

Wow Frankie you are getting forgetfull.
You left off #7
7. Drink beer
Seriously though I'll be hitting El Golfo for Memorial day (it's the anniversary of me moving to AZ and the trip is kind of a celebration of that move). Then spending the rest of the summer trying to get my motor back together and exploring the banks of the Colorado. Hopefully I'll get a fridge controller hacked together and I'll be able to add a number 8 to that list
8. Brew more beer.
But for now the heat has taken that season from me as well

That's funny Oldtimer, my first car was a 56 Ford F-100(small window) with a big block that I restored with my dad when I was 16. Maybe we do have a little in common after all. That and the beer of course...
During the summer, when it's too hot at G, I put all my gear on and my paddle on my bike and roll it across the street to my local elementary school. I push it into the sandbox, start it up and rev it a few times, and dump the clutch and throw a little roost. The I shut the bike off and push it back home. It's almost better than Glamis becuase I don't have any power-trippin rangers tryin to write me up for no flag.

Well, DuneGoon, i have a big back window "56", Fatman IFS, 351w all Edelbrock top end, Comp cams, MSD, Hookers, Jet C-4, short block prepped by Speed-O-Motive (est 420 hp) and some shiny parts for showing off.
I just got back from Las Vegas and went to the GOL site and read about the "posting under an assumed name" so I'm going to see what the fuss is all about but I will not respond to you personally on it. I gave you my word and I will stick to it. I may offer a general comment, but none will be directed at you. Fair enough?

Leaving for St Anthony Dunes over Memorial Day Week...Stops at Little Sahara and Coral Pink on way home.
Dune here dune there,
Dune all over dune everywhere!
Dune all summer, dune all day,
Dune is all I do, what else can I say?
Duning is my life,
Duning takes away my strife,
Duning leads to much fun,
Dune year round, 'Dune Season' is never done!
Anyone up for a quick trip to St Anthony?

When I lived in Phx we used to go to sunset crater (byFlagstaff) in the hot months. That would be a hoot again. Some of us oldtimmers remember the cinder ralleys of the 60s and early 70s. Is the area still open or have the eco-natzy's closed it down too? those were good days ,several thousand of your closest friends dodging each other and REALLY-BIG pine trees ,stumps and roots

I don't know about sunset crater itself but the cinder hills just north of Flagstaff are still open to OHV use last time I was through there (this past winter).
In fact I've got a friend who lives literally across the street from the access road who's just finishing a new 350 front engine long travel rail he and some friends built and designed themselves. Last I saw it the thing looked almost ready to dune. My roommate is also going to be moving Flagstaff around the end of the summer.
I've been dying to go up and play in the cinders some summer but last year no one else wanted to make the drive and this year my rail is getting the motor rebuilt.

Quit ridin!?! What the hell for? There's lots of places to go. Yea, I know the drive is a little (or a lot) longer for some, but look at the benefits. I go every chance I get to Pismo. True,Dumont is a scorcher now, but my Oregon trip isn't far off, and I'll hit the coast at least 3 more times before that. I don't mean to rub it in too bad, but hey, you gotta get your priorities straight right?

TO THOSE WHO GO TO PISMO: does your ride get rusted when you go? Been thinking about making a first trip but heard that everything will come home rusted.
Motoholics
Jun 5 2001, 08:44 AM
Ya it rusts at pismo. A coat of WD-40 on your bolts works OK. I am going this weekend and plan on bringing tarps to cover the toys at night. If you do that and stay out of the water your ride will come home in good shape. You might even want to rinse your toys with some fresh water before you put them to bed every night.
sduncan
Jun 5 2001, 11:14 PM
Stay out of the water and the wet sand. A little WD never hurts but I never do it. Bare metal will rust in a hurry, though. I'm able to put my toys inside at night so they don't get wet. Bring a tarp if you have to leave em' out. Its a nice way for you desert guys to get a sand fix during the summer though. And its quiet and peaceful during an off weekend or especially during the week. I can hear the waves now!! If you don't want to camp, just get a room somewhere. Hotels are everywhere, so is good food.
Check the Glamisonline.com board under the Pismo Beach forum for tips and info.

Hey Carf the Cinders are still open! Just east of Sunset Crater-it is designated as an OHV area and the FS swears there are no plans to close it down. Different than the dunes and personally I feel it's more fun on a bike than a buggy, but cool, clean, quiet and beautiful! First summer we had the quads we were there every other weekend and most of the time literally had the place to ourselves.

Get married end of June and spend 8 days out at Havasu. Work on quads and do some cleaning up on them; clean sprockets and chain of all the chain wax from this past season. Hopefully get some new Vipers to replace my original tires. Get a new tattoo also in the works......and Chris, you are a man after my own heart! I guess we will have to keep from lighting a match around ypu this summer...

Virgin, You would be like my fiancee and find a way. Even if that means staying up late with the shed light burning bright and annoying the sh*t out of the neighbor's dog at midnight! If he keeps that up, I'm gonna get a cot for him to sleep on and he can stay out there....

Virgin.....I'll be lookin for you in that garage, I need some welding.
I have been working on my car, putting in a new type of flooring. Don't know what kind yet, and then I get my Sandsports Mag only to find out I can wait until August and they are going to show many different options for flooring. Doug, I can't wait, help me.
But all this buggy work has given me the bug, I might have to watch every sand related video I own, and drink lots of beer to help me get thru these lonely summer months.

Alex, what type of flooring did you have in mind? My personal favorite is the perforated stainless steel flooring with 3/16" holes on 1/4" centers, and 18 gauge thickness. You buy it already polished, it stays polished forever with simple washings, it looks good, it's very hard to scratch, and all the little holes let the sand fall right through. The only problem is that it's expensive, but you only have to buy it once, and the effort you save by not having to polish it is worth the $$$. If you need more info, send me an email.

Paleale, I'm not sure of the exact cost, but I could find out. I think for front floorboards you would be looking at $200-$400 dollars, but that is just a guess. Expensive, sure, but to me it is worth it. The stainless floorboards will look good almost forever, with little maintenance.

i kinda like the idea of having the floorboards rhino lined. since they have quite a few colors now and even one glow in the dark. of course if you go with the rhino lining you don't want to pop for stainless when your just going to cover it up. polished stainless does look pretty sweat though.

Virgin,
I would let him stay out there for as long as he wanted...It's easier than trying to move the cats off the bed after they have "taken" their places.....Ron is like a bull in a china shop; he would wake the whole household!!
