Good topic! Ok, I got one for tire beads also. If you blow a bead and don't have any flamable spray, wrap a ratchet strap around the center of the tire and tighten. Add air and go dune.

Thanks, it does work pretty good. That Carb spray is the ticket though. You spray a little bit inside the tire then light it. When it flashes, it seals the tire up with 5-10 psi of air in it. I used to do that with diesel tires. A word of advice. Dont use anything with an oil or lubricant in it cause that stuff stays burning for a little bit. I bout singed off both eyebrows trying to blow out the tire that was on fire on my 58 Chevy!

If you do use the aerosol trick don't forget that fire extinguisher. This summer one of our dune buddies was romping his rail out at the river and lost a bead. His first attempt to hold it on included using 3M weather strip adhesive to help make up for the extremely low pressure he was running.
What he didn't count on was how flamable that stuff is even after it's dried. When he tried starter fluid to pop his bead the whole tire caught fire and wouldn't go out. Used up half my exinguisher on that.
OH - a good tip we just learned a few weeks ago. Dry Graphite spray on your carb linkages! A different dune buddy had constant problems with sand fouling the linkage on his carb and holding his throttle open. If he didn't lube the linkage it would stick - if he did lube it the sand would stick to the lube and make it stick.
Dry graphite saved the day! The rail has been run a number of times since and the carb looks like new thanks to the graphite. Nothing will stick and it lubes great!

I have to say, baby wipes are awesome. Use them myself. But the handiest thing I have is the astroturf in front of the tent. Helps keep most of the sand out...

Hmmm great topic..
As for the ether to pop the beads... one warning...
When that bead sets sometimes the bottom bead will pop so hard that the tire will fly into the air. Sounds kinda funny until you have an entire camp running for cover with a 30 pound sand tire falling from 50 feet!
(I've seen it!)
Do it with the tire on or attached to something or you might be REAL sorry!
Baby wipes are great for EVERYTHING. From keeping your nose wet to cleaning goggles. Make sure you get unsented, un-everything though or they will leave a film!
A fanny pack attached to your cooler is a great way to ride with a flashlight, pack of cigs, camera, ect. Another nice thing is one of those fanny packs that holds a bottle of water. Attach it to the handle bars and then you can get a quick drink without having to open the cooler. Great for quick stops.
The "Grass" carpet idea is a great one but sometimes you don't want to haul some large carpet around. What I use is one of those KIDS play carpets. The ones with the roads drawn on for kids to drive their cars on. (Mine is Hundred Acre Woods). It is small, strong, lightweight and cheap, not to mention looks real cool!
Take a rake with you if you are using a tent. Rake the area under your tent to get rid of all those darn rocks!
You can burn excess oil and gas from a fouled plug with a lighter and it will sometimes get you back to camp.
A red blinking light for EVERY DOG and KID in camp... This one rocks! The best for the dogs is the red ball they sell at Vendor row. The kids can get by with one of those round ones you can pick up for $2.00 at Kragen.
If you use a sleeping bag look for one that is "Extra Wide". This makes so much difference I will never sleep in a standard bag again!
Loose gloves will give you blisters!
An inexpensive "Air Tank" with 40 or 50 psi will keep all four quad tires aired all weekend with pleanty air to spare, but will probably only air one or two car tires before it is empty and might not air ONE buggy tire.
Damn, that's enough for now!
I got a million of 'em!

This one should be a no brainer to most of the people on this board but..... Increase the air pressure in your tires from what you would normaly run on those long drives into Glamis. It save quite a bit in gas efficency. Air down in the sand for better traction in any vehicle from a YZ80 dirtbike to a 2 wheel drive 59 studabaker.

I found that the type in a short square box are to be avoided. ONLY get the ones that come in the round tube. That tube will take any abuse you can toss at it. When I bought the ones in a box instead the box had broken before I got to me camp spot!

Heres one for you rattling kick starters. Tilt the bike up on its side, take a heat gun and heat up the kick start knuckle. When warm apply surfboard wax. It will "melt" in and take care of the problem. Also makes em open easier.
tire flat? keep a small line with 2 female ends that will screw into a valve stem. You can jump air from one tire to the next. Especially on duallies that have 80 psi tires on them.

Out of fuel in the dunes? Carry several feet of fuel line coiled up in your tool box/bag. Then, push/pull the out-of-gas vehicle to the base of a dune. Place another buggy/bike/4x4 that has fuel on the up slope of the dune so that it's fuel tank is higher than the one that's out of gas. Connect the fuel line to the tank outlet of the higher vehicle and just gravity feed down to the thirsty dune machine.

Heres the best but it has nothing to do with repairs:
Before you go to the desert to camp. Cook all your spaghetti, pizza, roasts, whatever you plan on cooking and put it in zip lock bags or divided into separate meal plates. Then all you have to do is crank up the microwave and heat if you can or heat a skillet up and warm the food. This saves so much time with dishes, preparation, the whole hastle meal thing and leaves more time for riding and partying.
Of course if you're BBQing steak or carne-asada you better F'in do it right and bring a grill. No sidestepping on the meat.

Couple things. One up on the baby powder for your "happy parts" when they arn't so 'Happy". Try using "Gold Bond". That stuff rocks. Also when carring a tow rope, I have a flat strap. IF you have a Blaster or a Banshee, on the front bumper there are rubber plugs. Take off the plug and stuff your rope inside the front bumber and then put the rubber cap back on. Don't forget that you have it, cause you cant see it. One more thing, keep a few zip ties on board, they can reattach a broken whip pretty darn good. DUNE TILL YA CANT DUNE NO MORE!!!

Gee, I had never thought of using the front bumper that way... What a good idea!
Ever been towed by a cooler strap?
Ok, more tips...
In a SMALL camper or the inside of a car or pickup you can use a candle or two, the household kind, to take the chill off. A candle will warm a small area fairly quickly. Don't go to sleep with it still burning, though!
If you use un-vented propane like a lantern or a stove burner to warm your camper you should invest $15 in a CO2 alarm. They are batterie operated and portable. I found mine at Wal-mart. Cheap peace of mind!
A batterie operated blinking red light like the ones that clip on your jacket for bike riding works very well for when your 2-stroke dies in the middle of sand highway. When the 2-stroke goes down you have no lights.. The red blinker just might save your life!
Don't crush your cans when you put them back into your cooler empty. If you crush them the extra space in the cooler will allow your OTHER drinks to bounce around. Eventually they will split or crack and then you have a huge mess!
If you need a small cooler for a cooler rack... ask your friends at camp. I know that I have about 3 spares that I've found at the dunes and am just waiting for someone to need one! I bet your friends have found many coolers themselves and would be glad to get rid of one!
Buy one of those $5 nylon folding chairs with no arms. They are so cheap that you don't worry about it so that you can leave it by the campfire all weekend or loan it to someone or strap it on a buggy... whatever. If you loose it it's only $5!
A ball cap rides fairly well in a cooler strap or on the handlebars. You'll appreciate it VERY MUCH while watching the races at OLDS.
If you bring sunglasses make sure they are wrapped VERY GOOD. I like the little white bags that come with Oakley goggles. If you don't wrap them up they will scratch so bad you can't see through them in only ONE RIDE!
Have one trained dog and one that runs off? Tie them together with a long leash. The one that minds you will keep the other one in camp! (this works on kids too)

Ok, that's enough for now!

Drinks?
I saw a few drink tips...
Personally I like mixing up a batch of martinis... Must have the olive... It looks great sitting around the camp fire with a martini glass.
Don't skimp on the Tequila... You get what you pay for..
The best? Tres Generaciones (Three Generations) $45 a fifth
Acceptable? Sauza Hornitos - under $20 a fifth and VERY sipable!
The TGI Fridays mixes or equivelent are very good on hot days... Pina Colada or Mudslide are the best...
By far, the VERY BEST drink for dunin is.......................
Good vodka and lemonaid. It is GREAT on a dune run! Trust me on this one!

1. Baby wipes are the best.
2. Take two ice-chests, one for drinks and one for food. In the one for food put 20 lbs.
of dry ice on the bottom, place a towel over thw dry ice, and then cover the towel with regular ice(about 2" deep). This will keep your food cold all weekend and you won't have to buy ice.
3. Invest in a porta-potty. It was the best money I ever spent. Made my wife really happy. You can buy a cheap 2-person tent and put the toilet in it for privacy(this would make the ladies happy.)
4. Don't use to much starter fluid or it wiil blow the tire off the rim. I have seen it happen to 44" Gumbo Mudder. It flew thirty feet.
5. Wear a beanie on your head. You lose most of your body heat from your head.
6. Change your clothes before bed. The sweat from earlier in the day will make you cold at night.
7. Take antacid. You will thank yourself after drinking all night and trying to ride the next day.
I hope this helps.
BTW does your air mattress make you cold?

Hi y'all

I'm Bekah (the nanny from NC, who just happened on the chat room and found all you wonderful folk)
I couldn't resist posting this....there's an awesome alternative to babywipes. Saw a papertowel roll in half and place in a round Rubbermaid or Tupperware container with a solution of glycerin and water and alcohol (I believe). I have many friends who use them as a more natural and inexpensive alternative to babywipes (I can get the recipe if anyone is interested) The plus to them is that if you use good papertowels-they don't shred as easily as babywipes...and the container is virtually indestructable, and the baby wipe stigma disappears too
Baby wipes are also great for getting spaghetti stains off white shirts - although being a nanny it's a little more cool for me to have them accessible

Great subject.
I use a 5 gallon bucket and a toilet seat. U just put a plastic bag in the bucket and put the seat on top.....there you go.
Fot the riding ice chest I use a hand towel soaked from the food ice chest. Just lay it over your drinks and it will keep them cold and help keep them in there place.
A roll of carpet works great in front of you tent or truck and if you have to work on your ride you put it under it and you won't lose your tools or nuts and bolts when you drop them.
I carry a couple of those space blankets just in case you break down and it will be a while before you get going again. They will keep you warm at night and in the day you can use them for shade. They come in packs that are about 3''x4''
For you buggy owners....I carry a cv joint in its box lubed up and ready to go. I put it in a zip lock to keep the sand out and the grease in.
Carry an extra shock bolt....I seem to break them.
I thought if you crushed your emties then it wasn't an "open container" ..Your just "recycling trash"...Any one?

Jason,
good point about the crushed cans. This is one point of contention I have with the BLM.
For my small cooler on my three-wheeler I have several options, depending on how many drinks I want to take. I have a water filled divider (that came with a different cooler). It's cool. I fill it with water and freeze it and put it in with my cans. It keeps everything nice and cool and after a couple of hours it's full of ice cold water!
I found a cooler once (who hasn't found a cooler at Glamis?) and inside of the cooler was one of those large, natural type, sponges. The type you might use to clean your car. This is a great pad for the bottom of the cooler. Finally, I always try to stuff a rag or shirt in the top. Anything to keep those cans from moving at all.
