Dunes law enforcement policies in place for Easter holiday
Federal, state and local officials declare that "Zero Tolerance" and "Break The Law – Go To Jail" policies will continue in effect at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA) over the upcoming Easter holiday weekend.
"We have effectively demonstrated our commitment to a zero tolerance policy during recent holiday weekends at the Imperial Sand Dunes, " states Greg Thomsen, U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) El Centro Field Office Manager. "Our strong inter-agency partnership will continue to insure future visitors to the Dunes that a safe and secure environment will be provided," Thomsen added.
A successful inter-agency incident command system will continue to play a critical role in monitoring large weekend visitors. The incident command system has proven to be effective in providing law enforcement presence and responding quickly and effectively to any situation throughout the Dunes during popular holiday weekends. Officials estimate that about 50,000 recreationists will visit the Dunes this weekend.
The recent President's Day and New Years holiday weekends saw a significant decrease in lawless activity that has plagued Dunes visitors since last Thanksgiving weekend. Officials state that arrests and DUI violations are down as well as medical service responses since the multi-agency incident command system was put in place for the New Years holiday weekend. Checkpoints and barricades will continue to be utilized in the Competition Hill and Sand Drag areas to monitor vehicle registration, open container laws and safety violations.
Over 150 law enforcement and support personnel from Imperial County, California Highway Patrol, National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of State Parks and Recreation, California Department of Forestry, California State Bureau of Narcotics, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, District Attorney's Office and California Department of Corrections will work with Bureau of Land Management officials through the inter-agency incident command system on-site. The Imperial Dunes is one of the most heavily visited off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation areas in the country.
