What are a few rules or what are the ins and outs about taking dogs to dunes?
I have 2 bigs labs?
Esco
Not sure but we always keep our black lab on a leash while outside, my GF is petrified that the dog will run off. at easter lots of dogs were offleash just kicking back around camp.

We take one of our buddy's dogs with us everytime we go practically. When we first get there, jump on a quad and call her, she'll follow forever. Run her a couple miles (big German Shepard) she gets it all out of her and just kicks it at camp with us the rest of the weekend. No Leash. We will put a leash on her if no one will be at camp and we have to leave her behind, but usually we'll take her with us. In a truck or somethin'. It's when we all go out on a ride on the bikes we tie her up.
TunaTodd
BEST ADVICE IS KEEP THEM IN A HARNESS TIED TO SOMETHING SOLID. IF THEY'RE NERVOUS ABOUT TOO MUCH NOISE I'D LEAVE EM HOME. I JUST FOUND OUT THAT MY LITTLE GIRL IS AFRAID OF FIREWORKS, SHE WOULDN'T STOP SHAKING AND WAS ON "WATCH" THE REST OF THE WEEKEND.
Buggyless
My little one is very good in camp so I can leave her off the leash unless we are leaving.
My big one is an idiot and must be leashed at ALL times.

Kerin, It's really not nice to talk about Wayne like that.

Tecate is right. You have no idea how many, well behaved, dogs have run off at the first backfire or firecracker. Imagine your dog running as fast as he can directly away from the sound and right into the deep dunes! This is a tragic way to loose a trusted friend.

As far as rules go, in camp, they are common sense.
Don't let your dog bother other people. If he's getting into other peoples things or barking at other people then he should probably be watched more carefully.
The other side of that rule is if you have a problem with someones dog don't hesitate to let them know, nicely. If they don't know he's bothering you how will they know to watch them more carefully.

Clean up after them immediatly
Since I have a dog that I let run around, for the most part, I keep my eyes open for "landmines". When I see one, it doesn't matter if it is my dog's or not, I bury it. It only takes a second. Make sure you either pick it up and take it out of camp or bury it deep enough that it won't show back up! All the loose dog owners should do the same. Just curtesey.

Try to keep the barking to a minimum. This one can be tough but I gaurntee that barking will be the number one complaint if your dog barks.

If two dogs don't get along try to share "loose" time. If the dogs cannot be loose at the same time don't make the owner of the other dog keep his dog penned up the entire weekend. Let the other dog have some freedom by bringing your dog in for a spell.

Anyway, those are just some common curtesy things that I've thought of. Mainly, dogs are welcome in camp. I love my dog and treat him like a small child. He would never let me live it down if I didn't let him go "meet" the group!

But when there's fireworks or other loud noises I take ZERO chances. He's on his leash, period.
I also trained him to run to the van whenever he gets spooked. It's worked well so far.

Good stuff VOR.

But the question is pretty vague. It really depends on the dog..if they get along w/ other dogs and won't run away...for sure bring em' along.

But if your dog likes to fight, bark and runs away..it's not a good idea to bring them....

Some dog owners are looking after their dog the whole time and can't relax and have a good time.

Chummin: If you take them, dig out some spots in the sand in the shade and dump a bunch of water in the depressions. They like to lay in the nice cool spots!!!!!
Chummin
Cool. Thanks for the info! I am not going to bring for the first couple of trips, but we'll see after that. Nice dog VOR. Cool name too.

Technically the law is all dogs must be on leashes and those leashes must not be any longer than 6'.

However I've NEVER seen or heard about that one being enforced. Even if you trust your dog the dunes are an unfamiliar and unforgiving place - I highly recommend a good leash. I learned quickly (and in my own yard thankfully) that it's got to be a chain for my pup. I had her tied to a tree on a long leash while I was working on my truck in the driveway - and suddenly I had a dog in my face - with a little nub of leash danging off.

Here's my pup and her brother tied up in our camp at Osborn from the last mini-cleanup:

Her brother bear (luvdunin/Julie's dog) was a lot better about posing with the dunes:

And since she was being tackled in that first shot here's Psam herself:

Oh man, all great looking dogs!
I hear you, Jason, about the chain. I actually have a slightly different take on the chain issue but keep in mind that my dog has been a camp dog since it was a young puppy.
The leash I use to tie my dog up is old and ratty and largely symbolic. I know that Baja could break it in an instant if he ever wanted to. He could also chew through it in about 5 seconds. But he hasn't. This tells me that when I leash him he knows what the purpose of the leash is and he minds me, but, if he ever really needed off that leash, like he got tangled or some wild animal was attacking him, he could get off.
Keep in mind that this would not work for all dogs. In the desert you are much better off with a leash you can trust.

Oh, a tip. If you don't have a harness you can put two collars on your dog and hook the leash to both of them. It then becomes VERY difficult for the dog to slip the collar.

Another tip. If your dog has an ID tag on his collar and he slips his collar and runs away, where is the ID tag?

Third tip. Those little red blinking reflectors that cost about $2.00 are great for dogs and kids. Just stick one or two on 'em and you can always tell where they are! For the kids I recommend pinning it on their back where they can't get to it.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot...
Sand hurts most dogs paws. It's almost always very hot and it also pushes their toes apart. Baja comes home limping from the desert almost every trip.
I plan on getting a set of "booties" for him and give 'em a try. If you can't do that I recommend you keep a close eye on your dog and if he is limping then you should tie him up and make him take a nap!
I make Baja sleep most of the day and let him out to play at night!

Vor
Um I don't want to point any fingers and ILove Dogs but, what about dogs behaviors when the owners are off duning? At Prez day there were these cute/poor little Beagels who were howling their heads off.

Then there was a dog that was all tangled around a trailer, another all tangles in an awning.

What can/should people who are back at camp do with/for these dogs when the owners aren't around?
The Pastor
Well, number one is point it out to the owners when they get back.
If my dog barked while I was off on a dune run I would never know it unless someone told me.

I generally try to set up a "babysitter" for my dog when I leave him. Someone to stick their head out and take a look to see that everything is ok. I geneally have family with me so it's pretty easy for me.

Vor
Chummin
I would lock them in the trailer while gone (open of course). If its hot out, then with the AC on and like VOR said, someone to keep an eye out.

If I even caught wind my mutts were driving peeps crazy, they would go home and that would be that. We take them to beach and on baja trips and they are great, so I don't Glamis would be a prob.
BamBam
Great looking Dogs Jason and Chummin. Hey, what kind of dogs are those Jason?

I take Kaya. I took her a couple of times this last season. She did good. I kept her on a 40 foot training lead while I was gone and she'd stay in my tent until I got back. I let her play with Baja or walk around, but sometimes I had to put her on a leash. Her paws did start to get really sore. BUT THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS GET THE I.D. CHIP FOR YOUR DOG. If your dogs get away and lose their collar, it can still be identified.

We have always taken our dogs out for years. With every new puppy, we break them in with the sound of the buggy and quad slowly at home, getting them use to the sound. Slowly we take them closer and closer, and get them use to some higher rpm’s. They all love the desert. My only problem now is that if I ever go out in the garage to start my buggy, the dogs get all excited to go to the desert.

We don’t trust a collar to keep our dogs when scared. Great idea from VOR about double collar. We bring out portable kennels for when we are off riding. I would be careful about leaving dogs in a motorhome when hot. A good friend of mine came back to find two dead bulldogs, and the third in really bad shape from overheating after the generator died. If dogs are kept in a motorhome when hot, it is very easy to install a thermostat connected to any 12v. alarm that will sound if temperatures get too high inside the motorhome.

They're dune mutts Bam Bam. Julie and Jamie adopted a dog that was found in the dunes last year (Checkers - he's on the back of the ASA calendar) and then learned that their female dog wasn't really fixed after all.

They had 5 happy dune mutts that needed homes. I happened to be looking for a pup at the time and couldn't say no to the photos Julie sent of them.

I actually picked Psam up from them at the dunes in the washes on an off-weekend. She does very well so far and dosn't wander far from camp unless she's looking to leave a landmine. Not much spooks her out there and when it does she seems to head for my truck. I sleep on the back seat and she sleeps on the front with no problems.

I've been working on getting her used to the rail by starting it up in the driveway while she's in the yard. She's still not too comfortable with it though. I've also been getting her used to sitting in the passenger seat but she liked that more when she was a little pup and could climb in and out through the bars easier.

If I ever get word that she's causing a ruckus around camp while I'm gone she'll start staying with friends here in town instead. But so far she gets excited when I start packing for the dunes. She does make a LOT of noise when I get back to camp though [Smile]

I would also say it's common courtsey for anyone still in camp to top up any dogs water dish if it's knocked over or getting low. Our furry friends need all the water they can get out in the desert. I always try to make sure any friends dogs dishes are topped up and expect the same from them.

That brown and black one is the puppy I had out with me at President's Day...the one that loved your Akita so much [Smile]
You can see from the pic how much he grew from then to when Jason took the next pic, which I believe was 2 weeks after Easter.
He's huge now-closing in on 60 pounds. His Dad's about 80, not sure if he's going to get that big or not. He'll be a year old at Thanksgiving.
Dad seems to be a Black Lab and Chow mix and Mom was a Keeshond.

It amazes me how many dogs get lost out there.

The number one problem is fireworks/firecrackers/M80's/cherry bombs.

They scare most dogs pretty bad and they break loose.,, My girlfriend pointed out it seems after we've heard fireworks,, we start seeing the strays and people looking for them.

It also amazes us how many people have dogs that bite for no reason.

Anyway,,, that's my take.

Protect your dog somehow from the fireworks. Especially if you leave your campsite and they are there unattended.

Only two types of dog owners,, careing and uncareing. You sound like a careing one.

Speaking of dogs Psam is even getting hyped about the upcoming season. I had the rail in the backyard so I could put the Baja in the garage last week. And a couple times I started the rail up with Psam just a few feet away.

Normally it spooks her but now she seemed to get happy and excited. In fact more than once I caught her trying to jump into the drivers seat while the rail was sitting back there [Smile]

Now the Baja is in the backyard again and if I even look at the drivers door she gets all excited. As soon as that door opens she's in there and sitting on that passenger seat begging me to go for a ride.

Last night my rommate and his GF were fighting and in the mele one of them let Psam out without keeping an eye on her or putting her on chain. I was watching "Super Troopers" (Damn funny movie) and didn't notice for almost an hour. After searching the house an not findinger her I was scared to death about where my pup might be. But when I opened the front door to start searching the neighboorhood there she was sitting on the porch waiting for me!

I love my pup and she just keeps getting smarter and smarter!
luvdunin
Damn Jason, it is time to get rid of those roommates! [Frown]
I'd hate to have to call PPS (puppy protective services) on you!

After last night the trouble making roommate may be gone. And that was decided before the pup was allowed out.

Then again she seems to be back again today so who knows [Frown]

Get this - she hasn't caught my other roommate sleeping around on her (since...well...he loves her and won't do that to her) but she's so convinced that like all her ex's he will cheat on her that she's decided he's gay now and cheating on her with one of our friends [Roll Eyes]

This chick has some SERIOUS problems and it's killing me to see the $*!*@ she's putting my friend through by refusing to deal with them.....

I have a spare bed/bathroom at the back of my house.

I interview prospective roomates based on how much they'll be home.

The last roomate I saw 3 times in 2 years, and this current roomate I think I've seen her twice in this past callendar year ( she stopped off to do laundry because her boyfriends machine broke).

Often you can get girls that live with some guy and like the idea of a place of their own even they don't use it, or people that travel alot and are seldom home,, or have another home elsewhere.

They're out there,, ya just have to be patient and they eventually call.

My daughter calls it the dramaless method.

Makes my boat & elect payment, and I have one less adult in the house.

I know that I would be the absolutely WORST roommate so I keep to myself. Studio apartment for me!

I've gotten lucky. I got a one room with a kitchen, but no stove and a bathroom... use of the washer and dryer and room to store my dunebuggy and three-wheeler.. Yard is fenced with two very good gaurd dogs, though I can't let my kid (Baja) run with the male... But that's a small price to pay. I really like my new home! No bills and only $500 a month... in a great neighborhood in Vista...!

Studio Apts. the only way to fly!

We have found lost dogs in the dunes a couple of times. Please make sure your dogs have a tag on with name and phone number.

We take our dogs too. We keep them in the trailer when we are not at camp and sometimes when we are in camp. We have two English Bulldogs and the heat is not very good for them so they like the A/C. We keep them tied up when around camp, the little on we have too since he is deaf. We would not be able to call him back even if he got away. But over all they love to go camping no matter where we go as long as they get to go.

I do have to say that with as many dogs that we have had in camp last season, all of them did great with not only the other dogs, but with the kids, adults, bikes and buggys. Everyone took wonderful care of all the dogs, I didn't hear not one problem.

I lock my dogs up when riding and chain them up when at camp. I have those kind of dogs that will attack to kill other dogs and would love the chance to maul strangers. They are real nice dogs when you get to know them [Angry Fire] .

Never saw the German Shepard, but Fri night someone had a doberman that was not all that nice. Lots or barking and growling at peeps walking by in full riding gear. [Frown]

I took my dogs to Glamis and used heavy harness/cables to tie them out. While I was out riding a stranger came into camp looking for help and my Rotty male knew the guy didn't belong there and almost got him. Now, the Rotty goes to a doggie hotel when we go camping.
Then, on anther trip, while camping at end of Roadrunner, my wife had our female shepard out and on a leash in our own camp when some POS scum sucking camel licker from the other side of the loop let his dogs out and they came over and attacked my dog. We chased them off but the POS who owned them never came over and apologized or anything. So I paid him a visit. His dogs remained leased the rest of the time he was there. Even then the SOB POS never apologized for his total lack of responsibilty. What a POS. And he was a duner.
