To everyone that was there, great job!!!
I drove by it this morning on my way out, looked good. Not great, but definately better.
Wasn't too much more we could do to affect the way it looks. That's up to Mom now. Still alot more we could do to clean it up though. So many cigarette butts, so much buried trash...

Vicki, SandSampler, Obsessed, Mike nice to meet you.

Thanks Everyone...
Chummin
boooooYaaaaa!
Started off slow, but picked up the pace fast! As usuall, you always want more to help.
In just 3 short hours, we filled my truck with trash and there was another truck looking to fill also..
Like Crash said, we did alot but so much more needs to be done. It took an effort and a half to get peeps to give us 10 whole freakin minutes of their lives to fill a bag..

THANKS Slappy for gettin those shirts out there! Was impressed and didnt expect it at all!

SandSampler.. You crack me up! "Hey, this is my stator I lost back in 73".. Jokes were funny and your energy to clean commendable!

The rest of you know who you are.. thanks for setting this up and lending a hand!! [Beer] [Disturbed]

The weather was perfect, the company was great and the work was fun (okay, maybe not fun but worthwhile).

The shirts were an unexpected bonus and man, do they look great.

By the way... so many people missed the hot dogs that when I got back to camp I was passing out packages of dogs and buns to everyone who glanced in my direction! Husband Bryan did the cooking and managed to keep the sand (mostly) off the dogs [Big Grin]

I hear next time someone's bringing teriyaki carne asada...

it was nice to meet you crash, chummin and vicki. I couldn't believe how there were so many little nik nacks under the sand, and all you had to do was dig down a couple of inches to find them. Everywhere i stopped to clean i found something, whether it was bottles, cans, broken glass, or parts, and it was all just under the surface. Comp still needs a lot more work, but at least we did a little. crash, you're right, if everybody gave just 10 minutes of their time, imagine how much could get cleaned. It was a nice treat to have some hot dogs after being on my hands and knees for a couple of hours, thanks Vicki.

its a good thing i found that rear axle bolt i lost off of my 73 elsinore back in 81. I can now finally put the thing back together.

Slappy, thanks for the t-shirts, that was way cool.

Sorry I missed the fun at clean up, I wasn't their this weekend, but our group always pick-in when there a clean-up going on, and we always try to clean one of the old fire pits by our camp every trip!

Still cant understand why the impulse to put glass bottles in the fire?

Slappy, I here you were a star with the T-shirts, good show!

How about one of you find fabricator come-up with a contraption that can be towed by quad to filter clean the sand? I hear that there's a contest abruain between a couple of buggy manuf.
How about a contest to build an inexpensive dun cleaner, get price right and who know!

Just my opinion

Mother G is no doubt smilin right now, feelin all goosy down low. Ya know what, Slap's Aunt McTresta got all goosy down low at Slap's burfday party one time. Said she was gittin gas earlier in da evenin. Slap thought she just filled up her ride or somethin, but she really needed 'mcflatuway'. [Eek!] UMPH>>>>>UNGHA>>>>>>UMPFF>>>>Ugly visual on da plaid rug, trust Slap.

Hot damn Slap thanks all dat showed up and played in Mother G at Comp. Although da Slapster do miss Comp in da night time, this will give da clean-ups time to really groom the hill; a beautimus makeover might you say, without people adding to the fire. Slap would love to see Competition Hill be a big focus right now in the cleanin department(and it probably is), then really push da word at Olds when peoples are around ya. You'd be suprised what people will do when you are next to them pickin up a piece or two of trash and then going about yo business. Most a da time they jump in and grab their trash and just say they forgot it or was gonna git it before they took off. And with a smile you tell them, "Yea, dats slapped-up. It's just been a habit lately cuz trash is a big player in closing Mother Glamis." Right there they start thinkin about it. And da more it happens, da more the word gets out. Maybe next time dat person won't throw their stuff on da ground. Just keep talkin dat talk as you walk baby [Big Grin] . Good people be doin it, and it be workin.

Slap would love to see Comp drug, but he heard dat there are rules regardin draggin too far below da surface or somethin? HMMM, a unique situation Comp is. Slappy sure hopes that there could be exceptions to Comp and Mother Glamis about that. Good idea Mr. Sand Wizard. thanks for da kind words too, but Slap ain't da star, da peoples gittin down and dirty are definitely the stars, Slap was just skippin along playin his flute [Wink] .

singing a tune eh....!

Well, funny you peeps mention a contraption that cleans..
Crash and I have been tossing this around for a while now and I thinks its high time to put it to work.
Yes, there is a law that states it cannot dig below 6 inches. But show me a BLM that would ticket that during a clean up and I will show you a politician with an agenda to close the dunes! [Angry Fire]
I would pick up a can, dig down to find a 12 pack of bottles 6" down. (oh, Olympia is the worst beer according to the people who leave their trash [Big Grin] )
I think its time Crash and I put the ideas on the drawing board here real quick and maybe have a prototype to test run real soon..
CRASH.. mums the word on the design for now! [Wink] you know the deal. we gots work to do!

There is the sandrake that the R&R duners built that is supposed to be stored at the ranger station for anyone who wants to use it. But it does have a few problems and is not the easiest thing to use I'm told. While the R&R guys reported great success with it I've heard that other people who tried using it got frustrated and went back to doing things the old fashioned way.

There's also a very fancy sand rake that KD Cycle here in Yuma built for the south dune cleanups. They keep it at their shop but said I would be welcome to grab it anytime I wanted. It has to be dragged VERY slowly however and they have a nice cart they use to drag it with.

Not sure on the design of the R&R rake but the KD Rake is all steel, rides on wheels so it's easy to drag, and is basically a set of steel tines 1-2" apart with a bunch of magnets (the kind you use to hold to pieces of steel at a 90 while welding) above the tines. Last time I saw them using it they got all sorts of nasty stuff out of the buttercup valley including some antique tools that looks like they'd been there for a LONG time. Of course at that same cleanup someone found a piece of the old plank road out in the dunes and I found a stash of pop top cans so mom must have been trying to get rid of some old baggage that day!

Here's the KD Rake:

There is a catch bucket for it but when I took this photo they were busy emptying it [Smile]

I know Jim has photos of the R&R rake somewhere.

Cleaner needs to be light weight and digs down only 4-6" that way no laws are broken and can be towed with a quad

kinda like a 3x3xX screen on a skid angled down to skimme the sand, wont work for a 2x4xX but might help for the butt's

I dont know about anybody else, but I would be interested in pitching in a few dollars to make this work. Let me know if you guys are interested. It wouldnt be much but maybe a few other people might pitch in to.

Wait till we have a design and I'd be more than happy to take your money to help get this thing working...

Thanks Downhillin

It's funny the little things you do....As I was leaving Monday afternoon I wore my "Comp Hill Clean Up Shirt" from Saturday's clean up and a fellow duner at Micky D's came up to me and asked if I was a volunteer and I said yes [Smile] He shook my hand and said "thank you". He was in a wheelchair and he wished he could have been a part of it...It just made me feel really good to be a part of it! [Big Grin] I'll definatley be there for the next clean up!!
