SENATE ENVIRONMENT PANEL WELCOMES WESTERNERS WITH FEW GREEN CREDENTIALS
Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., is leaving the Environment and Public Works Committee as part of a membership shuffle that will give the panel a decidedly less green cast. The committee, which already is expected to turn to the right under its new chairman, James M. Inhofe of Oklahoma, is adding two new GOP Westerners who received low grades from environmentalists in the 107th Congress. Legislative sources say Specter is headed to the Governmental Affairs Committee, where he will focus on homeland security. Craig Thomas of Wyoming, who is rejoining the Environment panel, received a 0 score by the League of Conservation Voters. Wayne Allard of Colorado, who had a 5 percent score from the environmental group, also is joining the committee. Rounding out the new members is freshman Republican John Cornyn of Texas, who raised $435,622 from oil and gas interests in his successful campaign.
