Full Version: Glamis... what could be better?

Okay, we all know that Glamis is a world-class place to ride. BUT there’s always room for improvement, right? Aside from the obvious (keep the environmental fanatics from interfering, give us our sand back, give those mean people at the Glamis Store personality transplants), what would you do to make it better?

There are no limits here... close your eyes and try to imagine what you’d do if you could mold Glamis even just a little. Go further... try to think of what would draw you to Glamis if you’d never been there. More bathrooms? Lower fees? Dump station? Designated areas for different levels of riding?

Your goal is to make Glamis THE prime sand area for the United States. Make it such a prime spot that no one would ever question what the word “recreation” means at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area.

Close your eyes and think... you control the future of Glamis. What are you going to do?

A Dump station and fresh water would be nice.
*mxchick*
Doesn't look like we need better duner's out there...but definitley fresh water maybe some big trees for shade around the camping areas...maybe a MX track, and sandboard lifts for the dunes...that would be fun!! [Big Grin]

Finish Gecko road, all the way through to the south dunes like the old dramp calls for! And yes fresh water and poo-poo dump would rule!

Remove all pavement except for a single paved road going from the ranger station to Gordon's well.

Start actually enforcing the laws already on the books instead of just making new ones.

Turn Gecko into a fenced RV Park with hookups and reservations for people who just have to camp on pavement.

Pull down those @!*!*& red poles and start actually monitoring the "special status species" so the red poles won't grow back again.

Schedule wednesday night windstorms every week. (Hey you said anything!)
SailAway
Now you're talking!

I love the idea of a dump station. And It's not too hard to do. How about if they charge for it and the money goes right back to the dunes... no OHMVR committee, no TRT. Create a fund that would pay for the maintenance of the dump and also put the money back to the people who are using it!

And I've never even thought of having fresh water available, silly me. Great idea. Same thing... charge for water (a very reasonable charge), enough to pay for the maintenance and for the cost of the water, right?

Trees? How about one of those little gazebo-thingies instead? Maybe even a picnic table underneath the gazebo thingy?

Turn Gecko into a fenced RV park? Ack! Gives me the willies but it's not my fantasy... Jason, maybe not all of Gecko but I'm sure certain campgrounds could accommodate that wish.

And that windstorm thing will take some work... any engineers out there? [Wink]

Very kewl topic. I would like to see more enforcement and education regarding the trash some of those PIGS leave behind. What the hell is wrong with those people. My god. Freakin' pick up your mess you beeeeeoooches.

Gecko Rd.. Part of it yes. Wouldn't mind having full hookups in the summer that's for sure. Occasionally full hookups as a choice would be nice. Dump station YES!! But, again don't be slobs. God some duners trash the one in brawley every freakin' weekend. PIGS!! I'm coming to your town and shiiitttting on your main street.
Also, friendlier LEO's, and BLM employees.
No more closures, Gecko Rd needs extending at least another 2 or 3 miles. Full time vending must stay. More events at Glamis would be awesome. ie; Buggie and Bike shows, Vendor Shows(swapmeet style), organized races, safety programs for the kids and some adult kids, also raise money for things like Jerry's Kids, Cancer, Battered Woman, etc etc.. And finally MORE PARTICIPATION IN THE MINI CLEANUPS.

Vicki,

When I look around in other areas and talking with the people there ... forget this two things.

dump station is way to expansive to maintain with all this stupid turds out there [Mad]

fresh water brings you the "long time campers" ... talk with Jon Crowley or FBT how happy they are that Sandmountain no longer has fresh water ....

In general most of this things only work out in areas where access is controlled "24/365", like coral pink. But how in the world will you do that in Glamis ?

Improve Glamis? Fence it in first and get it under control! [Eek!]

I like the Dumont way ... dirt road in, no service and make it unconvortable for the turds and posers .... and you have the best riding area [Cheese]

Vicki I think you misunderstood me. I don't mean fence all of Gecko Rd, just Gecko Loop and turn it into a real campground with all the things that go along with a real campground:

Dump station, Water, Hookups, Security patrols....

If people want a campground experience they can have it - if not there are still plenty of open areas that you can just pull into and primitive camp like I enjoy. But if you want that campground experience you need you be the ones to pay for it and that's why the fence and gates - charge a separate amount that goes into it's own fund to provide those services to those who want them...but leave the rest of us alone and let us continue to be self-sufficent without taxing us to provide amenities to people who already have more than we do.

It really ticks me off that I have to pay the same amount to camp in a place where I have no amentities and don't want any amentities as someone who wants to camp on pavement and have all the things that you expect from a campground. If they want that kind of experience they should be the ones to pay for it - don't make those of us in the "Cheap" seats pay more because the A/C bill for the skyboxes goes up in other words.

hehehe

Well, that sounds more like it. Personally, while I like camping at the pads, I'm not up for many more improvements (although full hookups in the summer would be dandy for the A/C). Glamis offers something to everyone, from the sleep under the stars with just a bedroll types to those $500,000 rigs I've seen. Whatta beautiful arrangement [Big Grin]

Now back to the daydreams... what else can be done?

Vicki

I should clarify that... I don't feel the need for too many "camping" improvements (although I sure do like the idea of those gazebos) but I do have other improvements I'd like to see. Oh yeah, I've got a whole laundry list [Cool]

HOW ABOUT A SCANNER THAT COULD LOOK YOU IN THE EYE TO SEE IF YOU ARE RESPONSABLE ENOUGH TO TAKE CARE OF G AND IF YOU WEREN'T IT WOULD SAY ACSESS DENIED ,NOW THATS DREAMIN .

65 degrees year round, full moon every night, open all the closures and fresh sand every morning!

Great question SailAway,

Getting down to the nitty gritty…Slap would love to make billboard/sign type wooden displays of wildlife that is indigenous to Glamis, or just passing through, and place them on her. Slap would work with the Fish and Game Associations Desert Ecologists in creating accurate pictorial displays and written information of each plant and animal. You know, The Algodones Dunes Sunflower blooms beautimus yellow flowers from March to May, and again from October to January. They are found in Mother G only, and they be considered a species of concern.” Somethin to that effect…And of course, designed McScrappbook Style by Slappy hisself. Hot damn Slappy getting goosebumps…

Place them along da wash road, Gecko, vender, Osbourne…And, Slap talked with Ms. Fringe about this. She says she wants her own sign, and won’t be sharing with Mr. Red or Ms. Fox, so we probably gonna give each critter their very own…She gave Slap a ‘Fringe’ up on dat if it comes through…They would look real sweet and would be best viewed on the East side of Wash Rd, but West of da train tracks, in line with or next to da poles. (Slap would love to do some serious touch up to the tressles also, but dat be later)…Place signs down Gecko Road at pads and bathrooms…Now, let yo imagination go for a second. Imagine your trek to the doo doo spot if you was on Gecko, it could go like this:
user posted image

OOOHHH how nice your stop could be… [Big Grin]

Then provide a GPS coordinate to one of the many landmarks on Mother G, such as Olds, China, or da Plane Crash Site, and put it on the sign. Each sign will have only one coordinate. So to get another, you gots to check out another sign. And did Slap say that the signs have to be custom?? OOOHH YEA, nothing but the best for Mother G…

Good, fun information dat would no doubt benefit all of us…

Slap's got all kinds of ideas for Mother, this is just one of them...

AND REMOVE THE CLOSURE STAKES FOR CHRISTSAKE!!!!

Fresh water is plentiful at Lil Sahara and pavement, but no one camps there "long time" or do they??

What would I do to change things:

Charge $250.00 a weekend per axle on your rig, per visit. Then refund all your money after the ranger comes and inspects your camp site when you leave. Leaving it as you came has it's rewards...

If your site had less trash you'd get paid out of the trashers fund.

Jeezus $250? Damn trying to make this a rich mans sport??? i dont know about you, but I dont have an extra $250 layin around for the BLM to "hold" for me, even if I get it back.. Maybe 50..

I just want the areas reopened, get rid of the troublemakers, and leave the rest alone...

Steve,

you need to read anything [Disturbed]

Yes Coral Pink and Little Sahara work out fine, but what is the difference to Glamis ?

......
hint hint hint
.......

read my post again (and do not too much [Beer] before you read it [Big Grin] )

serious, that would need controlled access, ever noticed that there is only one route into Little Sahara (and Coral Pink State Park) and maybe you noticed also that both parks are manned the whole year !!!

Hey, I know none of these ideas are perfect but this is a “DREAM BIG” topic and we don't have to get our toes anywhere near reality.

We’ll worry about the logistics when we get closer to implementation. For now,

KEEP DAYDREAMING

Make Glamis what you want it to be [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

How about a fully staffed medical center across from the Glamis beach store. When there's an emergency minutes, even seconds are critical for those not so nice injuries.Making the trip to Brawley takes too long. just dreaming ,right?

Maybe not, who knows?

Lots of great ideas coming out. I like Slappy's ideas of the special signs. Maintenance would be a problem (silly graffitti artists) but we could work on that... maybe an "adopt-a-sign" program or something. But again, the downside isn't important right now.

The ideas are what count!

They do have a doc there on call 24hrs now right, I remember our last trip the doc's Mom was handing out flyers for her son..

New management at the store and a 24 hour strip bar upstairs. With pool tables.

Temporary closures lifted via the new RAMP.

Better communication between the BLM and the community it is supposed to be serving. US!

Yeah that would be nice ....

and about the BLM communication .... I get the feeling when there is this "truly" organization that will also improve a lot the communication [Big Grin] .

I'll tell you some ideas I've heard for "improving" Glamis [Mad]

Tell me what you think of these:

Reservation system - buy your permit to camp at Glamis but not reserve a spot. Alternative is to have reserved spots.

Reservations for "premium" spots available on a bidding system.

Varying charges for levels of developed areas... gravel pad, paved pad, open sand, etc.

Any of this sound familiar? They should... these were mentioned back in the day the RAMP was being drafted.

Well, thanks to the OHMVR withholding money we might be facing these ideas again.

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Vicki
The Pastor
The only thing I want is to have Glamis TAKEN AWAY from the BLM and given to the State of California, where it belongs, to be run like Occotillo Wells.

I want/need/desire NOTHING...
No amenities, no cops, no ambulances, no helocoptors, no pavement, no signs, no bathrooms, no water, no dumps, NOTHING!!!

Like a Wilderness should be.

All of the land signed over to me.

As benevolent dictator of Glamis I will do the following:

I will have roving patrols of Hell's Angels come and kick your ass if you litter. [Ninja]

I will keep the dunes open forever. [Cool]

I will allow certain portions of the dunes to be for hikers only. If they try to take more than their share (based on numbers) I will have them beaten.
