Full Version: Tranny Problem On The Banshee

Was out at Glamis this weekend racing a 450R up a hill, when I came down my banshee was stuck in 3rd gear. Shift lever did not move freely up and down but was firmly stuck in one position (3rd). However, I could lift up on the shifter where it would shift to 4th, and stay in that up position until I pushed in back down-where is would downshift back to third. As it worked, it made a great speed shifter-unfortunately, it only had two gears.

Does this sound like a bent fork? If so, what am I lookin' at here to fix. How big of a job is this. I will not attempt myself, but trying to figure out what kind of repair bill and time it takes to fix...as the weather is awsome and I need to get out again real soon.

Thanks,

'Bob

Sounds like it, but weird that the shifter does not have any snap back...

shift fork ia most likely the problem, motor needs to come out and cases split to fix it

I didn't think you had to split the case on the banshee to get to the tranny. Is this not true?
MWBbanshee
You have't to split the cases but you don't have't to pull the jugs it's not realy that hard just remember to take the clip off from behind the clutch basket icon_wink.gif or is it behind the stator unsure.gif

ON the clutch side there is a pin, I don't remember exactly but it has to do with the spring that controls the return of the shift shaft. It' is also some type of adjustment screw I'd have to look at the manual to get the name. Any way I broke mine about 2 years ago sounds like a simular problem. It may be common because the stealer had the part in stock.

I would not recomend taking the motor outa the bike with the cylinders on. Its a pain in the arse...with them off it comes right out.

Clymer Manaual Pg 170 Part #2. Picture of it Pg 171 Fig 84. Shifting mechanism adjust bolt. You might want to check if it is in place before you split cases.

there is a spring at the end of the shifting rod that pushed a metal piece about 3/4 of an inch tall in and out of place. the metal piece may have been turned around. (happend to me) 40 bucks should have you back in the dunes with labor but we will see i guess.

The same exact thing happend to my 97 shee two times now. First time I took the side cover off couldnt find anything wrong and when putting it back together found that I had spring return on the shifter again, Rode it for the rest of the season without problems. Second time I was way the hell out in the dunes and it stuck in second gear, I rocked the bike back and forth while in gear and played with the shift lever and got it unstuck. I have taken the bike apart a few times now and cant find a thing wrong icon_confused.gif

Boys and girls the shift shaft has been jammed. The c shaped mechanism that grabs the shift star and rotates it to shift the gears is misaligned. Sometimes you can rock the bike and wiggle the shifter to get it un jammed. If that doesnt work take the cover lose, all the bolts on the clutch cover about 1/8 inch out and push teh shifter towards the motor. That will push the c shaped mechanism past the shift star pins and reset it. Then tighten the bolts back up and refill the tranny. The shift shaft eventually wears out and gets sloppy so this happens. Sometimes the shaft is out of adjustment and causes this too. A bent fork will normally not shift properly not stick between 2 gears. Just food for thought.... thumb.gif

Hey where are you located? I live in phoenix if you need some help. This has happened to a few guys in my group. Got lucky last weekend and just rocked the bike and got it unstuck.
Rudebob
I also live in Phoenix-N.W. Valley. I will see if I can fix it myself. If not i will PM you to pick your brain. Thanks for you help.

Well I got it fixed tonight. I was the shift shaft. Seams that some lateral movement of the shaft through the case allowed the the fork slip past and get stuck on top of the star rather than between the gears. Unfortunately, I had to pull the clutch to get to and and free it up. I then put a nylon spacer on the the shaft of the shifter side so it coul no longer move that far past the star. This summer I will take a look at replacing it along with a few other parts.

Anyway, it was a good learning experience. I have never taken apart that side of the engine before. Thanks for everybodys help and advice. If you had not of pointed me in the right direction I would probably got raped by a shop telling me I needed a new tranny or more 25bangin.gif
