Folks,
I bought a used 1915 that was supposed to be fresh. Once I installed it, it had a knock. Upon tear down, the machine shop informs me it is a 1776, and VERY worn out.

So back at square 1, I have decided to make it a 1915, if possible. One friend says that a 1915 is the same bore as a 1776 with longer stroke, meaning a new crank. The machine shop says that its the same crank with bigger jugs.

So does anyone have a web site that could provide the following info:

CC's jug size crank need clearanced?
---------------------------------------------------------
1776 XXmm stock? Y/N
1835 XXmm stock? Y/N
1904 XXmm stock? Y/N
1915 XXmm stock? Y/N
2180 XXmm stock? Y/N
etc.

Thanks a ton.

Here's a site with some pretty good charts, showing how the engine sizes were calculated.

that sucks that you got the slimey banana, a dual carb 1914 w/ good heads and big cam will really suprise you how strong it can run. good luck headbang.gif

Hey kjw36, here is the formula for figuring displacement on vw engines BorexBorexStrokex3.1416=displacement. In your case, 90.5x90.5x69x3.1416=1776. rollsmile.gif T

You must have bought it from the same guy I bought my first rail from. He said it was a freshened up 1776 and when I tore it down, it was a 1600 with dents in the tops of the pistons

Between myself and three of my good friends, we have bought 5 sandrails, none of them have had the motor it was supposed to have, even the one with a reciept for a 1914 from bergmann had a 1835.

In genereal, with the people I have dealt with, take the size of motor they claim to have, drop two of the most popular sizes down and that is probably what they REALLY have rolleyes.gif . So if they say 1835 its prolly a 1641. This works unless They say its a stroker motor, usually they are entirelly full of crap. plthumbsdown.gif

You would think it wouldn't be hard to be honest but some people just suck... And then they get all mad when you want to pull a head off to measure angryfire.gif

thats the scary part of buying a used vw motor my brother got screwed twice the first time it was a bug he bought had dual kadrons guy also said it was a 1776. that motr blew so he saved for another a guy offered him an 1835 he saved for a while when the offer came turned out to be a 1600 after that he said screw it i am going to build my own this time.If i were to buy a used vw motor and am serious about it i would have the seller remove ahead if it is the claimed size he will have a buyer if not too bad(IMO if it is what it is claimed why noit prove it it is easy to do) but due to rip offs i am building my own motor also from scratch so i know what exacly is in it.

I'm lucky. The Baja with a "1641" that I bought turned out to have a stock 1600...not a big loss.

The Manx with a 1776 actually even had a 1776 - unfortunatly it had the wrong oil pump for the case so it didn't last very long until I had to rebuild it (old 8mm pump in a case with 10mm oil passages.) Thankfully the "1641" had a high volume 10mm pump that I swapped in durring the rebuild and the 1776 has been happy ever since icon_biggrin.gif

94mm Bore X 88mm stroke = 2442cc + 15lbs of boost = kicking your ass up the hill biaatchhh! drummer.gif

I was a little sceptical about the size of my motor when I bought it, but after I blew it up the first time, I learned that it was indeed a 2442. - With the really big motors you can tell from the outside of the motor, because you need the long jugs or spacers to get up the stroke size. You still can't tell exactly because you don't know the bore, but it is an indication that it is big. - Just like how my girlfriend knew about me yay.gif .

Bummer on getting screwed on your purchase - maybe your seller was lied to or maybe he lied to you. - Either way, somebody deserves a beat down 259mm.gif .
