If I have a regular one battery set up now. No switches, changeover relays, etc. just a red cable coming in and a black cable, can I just use the red cable and split it into 2 cables and then run 2 sets of 2 batteries in a series and call it good?

If you have a 12V battery and you want to install 2 6 volt batterys, here is what you do. Install the two batterys and put the ground wire on the neg. of the right battery and the pos. cable to the pos. of the left battery and then run a cable between the pos. of the right battery and the neg. of the left battery.

if you have the 2 six volt setup and want to run a trickle charger, how would you make this happen? the trickle charger has the aligator clamps 1 red, 1 black.
thanks

EsHo, Look at the drawings at the start off the thread. Hook the red wire of the charger to the post with the line going to the trailer/Moho and the black one to the post that has a line that goes to a body or engine ground.

Check your battery voltage and you might need to do a voltage drop from the battery to the starter. Run your DVOM from the Pos+ of the battery to the Battery terminal of the starter, try to start the Gen and see how many volts it reads. Now I'm not sure of a voltage but if you are losing a great deal of voltage from the battery to the starter that could be your problem. Also check your grounds, my trailer had a small wire from the battery to the frame, I installed a 4ga. wire to the frame and everything seems to work better.

Thanks, I am switching from two 6V to four 6V and your diagram is a lot simpler than the one I drew up. I have two Trojan T-105 that I bought in 1997 still working but got a deal on 4 US Battery US250. The Trojans has a 75 min. rating of 115 and these are 150. Shouldn't have to run the generator to charge batteries any more.

6 Volt Bat setup

I’m a little confused on the 4 and 6 battery hooks up. I understand the 2 6volt batteries will give a total of 12 volts with a lot of amps. But the way the diagram shows it looks like the 4 battery hook up will give you 24volts and the 6 battery one will give you 36volts. Can someone explain to me why you wouldn’t hook 2 x 2 x 2 in series and then all three of the banks in parallel? It’s a bit hard to explain.

The second and third set are just piggy backed to the first set. You could actually add as many 'sets of two' as you want and just have a larger capacity of 12V power.

Will to many amps hurt your RV? I just installed my 6 volts today but now I'm second guessing myself as to whether or not it was a good idea.

Amp Hours is a rating of longevity, not output power.

I used my 2 6 volts this past weekend for the first time. Saturday night was warm and we have a 10" 12 volt fan for the bedroom and the ceiling fan in the living quarters. I left both on and the volt meter at bed time was 13.3 volts. In the morning it was 13.1 volts. My old 2 12 volt system would have been to low to start the generator.

I had the generator not wanting to start problem also. The batts were fine, just not for the 38' cable run. So I placed a bat mount about 3 feet from the genny under the coach and put a 12 V optima and replaced the long cable with a 3' and grounded to the frame. No more starting problems, and it recharges while it runs.
I also run dual 6V's for the coach, and am adding two more within the next week or so. Just have to find a new place for the engine battery.

Yes you have to have an even number of batteries.

Anyone ever run 2 12's...like when they got the trailer new...and add 2 6's?? I'm asking because I'd like to get some good run time on batteries but I don't want to just 'toss out' my perfectly good 12's right now.
Maybe when they're no good, but just not right now when they're new.
I'm guessing I could run the 6's in series of course and then run THEM in parallel with the 12's right? Two 6's in series make 12...add them in parallel and I'm good to go.
What do you think?
But, as the 12's begin to take a crap, will it effect my 6's?

You won't get optimal performance from your batteries if you mix and match. They don't even recommend mixing new and used batteries of the same brand, because the older or weaker brand of battery will decrease the charge to the newer/stronger batteries and you won't get what you paid for.
Just run the 2- 12Vs for a couple yrs, then switch over to 6V batteries.

Sam's club and Costco batteries have been used and are said to be OK. I had Sam's batteries for 5 years before I replaced them this summer. A lot depends on how well you take care of them.
