i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about locking differentials. as far as which ones are the best and what the advantages and disadvantages are to locking differentials.

The best is the ARB air locker. Its a bulletproof locker that you can engage and disengage from the cab. Its very expensive though. The tried and true detroit locker works well, is super strong, but is a little loud when turning on pavement. Don't look at spools unless your truck is strictly built for offroad. They eat tires and make your truck handle very different. There are a bunch of new lockers out that I'm not sure about the quality or performance of. Your best bet is to call an offroad shop, tell them what your gonna use the truck for and ask them what they recommend.

Yeah what Ben said. don't forget when changing to a locker, thats the best time to change your gearing.

the detroit locker is the best you can buy. the air locker has some unique features, which also cause unique problems. i have heard from several of my offroading buddies that they are more trouble than they are worth(plus they are pretty pricey). if you are just messing around in the sand, i would stick with an limited slip diff, it will gove you more traction in the sand and they have decent on highway manners. they run about $450 for an auburn limited slip.
