I have a Jamar Super Shifter in my VW rail. Just recently I noticed that when shifting from 1st to 2nd it is not straight back, it is back and a little to the passenger side for it to engage into second. When I try to go straight back it locks in nuetral. Going from 2nd to 1st works fine and I just noticed it on my last trip. Any ideas of what to check or anything? Thanks

I run one of these on my 002 trans. It sounds like one of the couplers came loose, probably the one to the trans itself. I ended up using LocTite and wrapping it with tape, then putting a fat cable tie around it. Hasn't came loose yet. It's also possible the adjusting lock nut came loose, at the back of the shifter.
Just a few things to check.

I always had problems with my overpriced jamar shifter. I would get it dialed in, go for a ride no problems. Then the next ride I couldnt get from 3rd to 2nd. I effed with it for two seasons and tried every trick that peeps told me, nothing worked until I threw it away and put a STOCK shifter in. My stock shifter works great , without any problems

Wow, I must of got a different one. I've had it in the car for two seasons, with no problems at all. I did weld the couplings to the shift shaft, and use the set screws on the shifter and trans ends though. There are three others in our group that put them in at, or around the same time, they like 'em too.
I guess we got lucky?

My buddy loves his gene berg shifter and says it was worth the money, I think stock is the way to go.

Are you sure this is a problem with the shift shaft?? I had problems with my Jamar shifter but it was just that the shift gate needed to be adjusted. In fact on the last trip, I think it came out of adjustment again becuase 2nd was giving me problems.
Im just going to remove the shifter and adjust the shift gate.
Just my opinion.

I call it a shift gate, it may have a different name. Its the piece that limits the shifter movement and makes the reverse lockout work. Mine fits between my shifter and the box on the frame where the shifter is located. It has a rectangle cut out that gives the shift pattern. For example when the car is in nuetral and you move the shifter to the drivers side it gives you access to 1st and 2nd gear by simply moving the shifter up or down. Without this plate in there, the shifter would pass the point where it enters 1st and 2nd gear which sounds like the problem that your having. My problem was primarily the shift from 3rd to 2nd.
I hope this makes since to you.
