This fight to keep our dunes open and to re-open the closure can get quite tiring. So many duners are putting forth a tremendous effort. I'm amazed at the passion I see among you. So I have a suggestion that may help you keep the fight going. The next time you go to the dunes, be it Glamis, Buttercup, etc., do something for yourself. When you first get there, take a look around. Look at the beauty of the dunes, smell the clean air, and remind yourself, "this is why I fight." When you go on that first dune ride, stop and think about just how much fun you are having. Take note of the smile on your face. Say it again, "this is why I fight." Stop on top of a huge dune and look at all the gorgeous dunes surrounding you... say it again. Go to your favorite location in the dunes (assuming it's not in the closure). Think about how much that spot in the dunes really means to you. Another reason you fight. If you have kids that you take to the dunes, look at all the fun they have. See them smile and laugh. They love going to the dunes, don't they? You fight for them. Think about the fact that your kids may one day have kids of their own, and will surely want to take their kids to the dunes. You fight for your future Grandchildren's right to enjoy the dunes. When you are sitting around the campfire at night with family and friends telling stories and laughing, say to yourself once again, "this is why I fight." Then look up at the million stars in the clear sky above you and say it again. Take all these wonderful experiences in the dunes and let them reguvinate your heart and mind with an even stronger passion. These are the reasons you fight to save the dunes. These are the reasons we all fight. Because we love the dunes. Because it is our passion, our way of life, our way to relax away from the stresses of work. But there is one more reason we fight... the closures. If, when you are out enjoying the dunes on your next trip, you should happen to see any closure stakes, stop right there. Look at those stakes that are keeping YOU out of YOUR dunes. And say to yourself, "THIS IS WHY I FIGHT!"

I remember the first time I stopped on top of a tall dune and looked out over the landscape, drinking in the endless waves of sand. I remember feeling privileged to be able to look upon such beauty that I'd only seen on television. Every time I'm out in the dunes, I get that same feeling back, that I'm extremely lucky to see the land that spreads out before me. I'm not going to let some misguided extremist take it from me. Thats why I fight.

My trip this weekend may not sound that great - I never made it out of camp other than one trip to Comp where I broke my truck before I even made it to the valley.
But being stuck in camp reminded me of one of my favorite reasons for fighting. I was camped with a big group of people I had never met in person before but was still treated like a long lost brother. If any one person needed anything at least three others popped up willing to help.
I took my hi-lift jack apart to help someone I've never met before...and my cheap jack wasn't designed to be taken apart! (Biggie, get that alternator fixed yet?) But I didn't mind because when my truck broke everyone started thinking up ways to try and help me.
I just can't wait for a longer weekend to get back out there and be reminded again and again of what a great place this is and why we have to fight so hard for it.
Oh - and Julie I forgot to return your loctite I borrowed for Biggie. I'll get you and Jamie back next time - I didn't realize I took off without returning it until I was halfway back to Yuma.

This morning while I was in the shower I was thinking of reasons why I fight and I came up with the most important one of all, I thought I would share it with you all.
As some of you know my dad has been going to Glamis since he was small, I'd say starting in the late 1950's. So, it was only fitting that when I was small I would start going there also.
Well, now, my parents are divorced. Well have been, for over eleven years now. I don't see my dad much, maybe once every few months if I am lucky.
When I think of Glamis now, it reminds me of when I was younger, my parents were married and in love, and times were much better. It reminds me of the time I spent with my dad and when he first taught me how to drive stickshift in our jeep on sand highway. In fact, I can't even go on and say more about it because I am getting too choked up.
I want to always be able to go to Glamis and remember those times, This is why I fight.

I fight to stay alive. I fight so that our human environment includes abundant wildlife. I fight so that our kind doesn't thoughtlessly destroy the habitat that sustains us. I find that my opponents (I won't say "enemies") are generally from the opposing side politically. Most duners are white and have no knowledge or appreciation of people of other colors or cultures. Most duners are gun fanciers. many duners are just spoiled little city dwellers with a terminal case of BOREDOME. So for some fun they get into the duning thing and drink and drive all night. OK by me but please leave some desert for me.

Hmmmmm. What's the matter little man? Are you bummed because the CBD doesn't have a bulletin board? Had to come over here to post your nonsense? Real nice. "Leave some desert for me" you say. Have you ever flown over the USA in a jet and looked out the window at the millions and millions of wide-open, unihabited acres of land? Go hike all you want, there's plenty of room. But leave our sand dunes alone!

Slappy gotta say dat that was the most racially incensitive statement dat Slappy has ever heard. YOU have just portrayed an America that was voted out years ago.
Slappy honestly gotta say dat this can't be Mr. Milkvetch, cuz he don't be stereotypin so blatently as you just did. AND, Slappy's neighborhood be no place for racism, so please take it back to da CBD website. Furthermore, Slappy is a man of color, and he be taken great offense to what you just said. Slappy know that deep down inside your empty heart, you like to hide in corners and isolate yourself from society, but insist on making your beliefs societys laws. As a matter of fact piervetch, Mr. Milkvetch be cohabitating with us duners quite well...Furthermore, Mr. Milkvetch be needin us...funny huh...??? Your problem exists within yourself.
Slappy will also add that your statements are very dangerous and terribly inconsiderate. Slappy PRAY that you are not that ignorant to believe what you have stated...You obviously have no understanding of the desert, its wildlife, and the individuals that recreate on it. Someday piervetch, you and Slappy can sit down and discuss/debate our differences of opinion...BUT SLAPPY WILL NOT TOLERATE RACIST BIGOTRY HERE, NOT IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD.
Oh BTW, Slappy DO got hisself a real fancy gun...HMMM, wonder what dat fancy gun coulda done if it was aboard any one of those jets that crashed in New York, and was in the hands of a true American??...You of course, with your leftist views and passivistic ideology, would condemn any such action because the tool(gun) being used to FIGHT for your freedom was being used. But piervetch, Slappy will not/CANNOT place you in that class of people...you are nothing but a M_C_A_S_S_H_O_L_I_N_S_K_I!

Mr Piervetch, It takes alot to p**s off the slappster and it looks like you've done it. I think you have worn out your welcome here, so go back to the CBD. People like you are the reason that this country is so F-up. You are one of those people that are so willing to give up my constitutional rights, you make me sick. Out of millions of acres of Califorina desert. You would begrudge me and my friends 400,000 acres of wasteland to play in. Stop being such a hater. You racist bigot.
P.S. I hope you got the response you were looking for.

Fireball, Slappy hope dat he didn't come across too angry over in da neighborhood. Da last two days have been way out 'shastamcsnapplish' (of course dat be bad).
There just be a few things Slap wanna be sayin. Piervetch, Slappy gotta thank da people from da CBD, Sierra Club, YOU, etc...for bringin to the Off Road Community the Peirsons Milkvetch unique existence and other identified endangered species. Before da Closure took place, only a very small, and Slap mean real small, percentage of the OHV community even knew about any endangered species existing out there. The word is out now, and people are being educated about it...What a wonderful thing Slappy gotta say. Now, there needs to be an influx of more education, because da people are VERY INTERESTED, and willing to improve ALL factors that exist in relation to Off Road Recreation, especially if it affects the Imperial Sand Dune Recreation area.
Slappy appreciate some of the aspects of your position that Slappy assume are accepted without reservation by the Environmental Movement. However, Slappy do have a problem wit da solution, and that was placing closure signs out on Mother G, eliminating peoples right to access her. The action was wrong, but your passion is strong. There could be another way that could work for all of us:
Keep da education flowin...da more da people hear about da wonderful wildlife out on Mother G, the better for all of us...
Stress da policies for a cleaner desert:
Sponsorship programs like you see on da highway...do da same in da desert. Dat would be a pretty good idea. Slappy would gladly sponsore a wash or any area on Mother G... Education programs, posted materials, presentations...da ideas be endless.
--Now, this give Slap some concern. Slappy read about why da milkvetch can't be transplanted...However, Slappy be findin it hard to believe dat WE, intelligent human beings who have nearly mastered da art of cloning, sent a man to da moon, split da atom, see and analyze a DNA strand, CANNOT HELP, IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM, A WEED GROW AND FLOURISH IN ITS OWN HABITAT. We have brains, lets use them by collaborating together and searching for a way to increase the Peirsons Numbers. Slappy know that Danielle Pattersons passion for wildlife can be focused in an area of research: Like finding the ability to germinate milkvetch seeds, and planting more out on Mother G. Slappy do gotta ask a question though, HAS THIS EVER BEEN TRIED OR EVEN CONSIDERED? Please don't give Slappy a theory on why it won't work, we gotta try first. Slappy would love to donate to that cause...But, don't close down and further restrict access if the answer is I DON'T KNOW...What that does is make the Slapster think that you don't care, and are unwilling to compromise to find a solution that will better all of us.
Slappy know that the collective minds of the Environmentalists and the Off Road Community can work together towards a common goal, and remove the closure signs. This can work. Slappy gone...
Slappy apoligize if he came across angry on his above post, but it be time to unite, not divide.

Amen Brother Slappy, and my other friends here. This bigot does not belong here, he speaks mistruths and racist comments that are, in my view, anti-American. Not surprising really, he obviously supports the CBD, a group that is not only anti-American, but in fact anti-human. Shame on you piervetch, you are not a true American!

I fight because my third trip out to mother G was the last trip I had where I had full use, and feeling of one of my legs. I had a blast that year ( a year that my fear of the dunes seemed to dissapper) not to long after that I found myself physicaly unable to do much, but I vowed to myself I would return to over come my fears, and go balls out every chance I get. I fight that and even if I spend all my money to fill up my truck and gas can to head out2&1/2 hrs. in the middle of summer to ride under a full moon only to find myself a little over whelmed and left after only an hour long ride. I must say this is why I too must fight.

"please leave some desert for me"
I can't remember the last time I heard of more desert being opened to ORV's. You come here and ask US to leave some for you while the Feds continually close more desert to ORV's. I have to laugh sometimes when I think about how pathetic the CBD types behave, the courts have been siding with them for decades and yet they still run around screaming the sky is falling. Mr.PMV, you should take the drive from Victorville to Las Vegas sometime and see the sights, you'll be amazed, hundreds and hundreds of miles of open desert untouched by man.
Just some facts for conversation.
California deserts. 25 million acres, roughly a quarter of California's total area. More than 90 separate mountain ranges. Because of the California Desert Protection Act of 1994, there are parks, preserves and wilderness areas. Among them are the Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park, and Death Valley National Park, which at 3.3 MILLION acres is the LARGEST park in the country. The desert contains 65 individual wilderness areas. This area was designated by Congress on October 21, 1976, through the Federal Land Policy and Management Act.
These are just a sample of what is available in California. I honestly don't believe for a minute that you regularly or even occasionally go out to the deserts, you just hate off-roaders period. We could be riding ATV's in garbage dumps and you would still protest it.
