February 12-13, Algodones Dunes (Sonoran Desert) Hike the biggest dunes in America, cross the citizens' proposed South Algodones Dunes Wilderness (not as hard you may think). A very unique trip.

I would assume that someone will be following behind to take pictures of this publicity stunt for us.
This trip is planned along with two others...followed by this:

All there going to do is camp at Olgilby walk out to the big dunes and turn tail and go back , unfortunetly some good hearted dunner will see them walking in the forbidden zone thinking they are in trouble will ride up to them to help and suddenly
Photo op Headline will read "Bad Dunner tried to run over Eco-nutz in forbidden zone" Once again we will look like the bad guy

Is there anyone that will be at Olgilby that weekend to maybe make up a sign warning duners that they will be out there and that antagonizing them will only make matters worse? Just a thought.

I have an idea...some of our younger members should join the CBD and go on that hike with them. Take a GPS and log every step they take and where it is they actually go. Take video cameras and record everything they do, everywhere they go.
If they want to "talk the talk" make them "walk the walk". Take our own reporter so we can spin a web of lies just like they do. I happen to know someone that is handy with a camera...(his initials are Tom Simrak) He can show how those evil hikers stomp the crap out of lizards and turtles and PMV and poop in the bushes!

I think I just may have to make it a point to get out there that weekend. I wonder how they would like someone watching THEIR every move, plus I am just curious how far they will actually make it.

They could be planning on hiking Buttercup. More than once I've heard Patterson say he wanted at least everything below I-8 at a minimum. They really want to turn the Buttercup closure into something more permanant because they know how hard it is to enforce - it's right next to the highway and VERY visible - it's easy to access by car since the road runs right along it - and the kicker according to those like Patterson, "Well, you just don't feel safe hiking with OHV's anywhere near." Never mind that it's so close to I-8 you CAN'T get away from noise.
Their last organized hike (official by the CBD - not the unofficial tiger teams out this past T-day) they brought journalists along. And the carefully planned the path so they'd avoid any large PMV patches so they could show off how "rare" it is.
They're probably just looking to get another photographer out so they can fund anther "art-tour" to beg for more donations. Then again maybe the recent ruling in Tucson will make them think twice about trying to trick any more duners into helping them get "just the right shots"

Meant to post this earlier.
After MLK weekend, when I ran out to Glamis to give Dana his prize for the boat, I noticed a group of hikers at Osbourne.
On my way back, I stopped to chat with them. They had cameras, a GPS, a lap-top, and were VERY evasive answering any questions.
They, and their cars, were quite obviously of the Non-duning crowd, could have been the Sierra club stickers or lack of Off-Road stickers that were evident.
Oh yeah, and when I asked them where their day use/seasonal pass was, they promptly chimed in "Hikers don't need those".
They were reluctant to let me go with them into the Northern dunes..even though I played my sweetest self up (really, I can be political when I want too). So after a while I gave up trying.
I watched them head off into the dunes on the north side of 78, they had traveled at least a mile in when I lost sight of them.....and yes, their course was very erratic....avoiding lare clusters of plants.
Hmmmmmmm

I think if they park their cars at the osboure area - they do need a parking pass.
VICKY???? Can we get a ruling on this?
I think someone should join this club that can maintain a straight face and see what it brings us..
OR we just all drive down there and watch them from 500' back.. Follow then at an idle.. Dive up and ask if anyone needs assistance, water, or shelter??

Osborne is a very difficult area to manage... is it part of the ISDRA? Yes. Is it also a convenient turn around for tourists? Yes. Should every tour bus that stops there for 30 minutes be charged? Well, some say yes and some say no. If it's parked there, aren't the resources being used? And aren't the rest of us paying a use fee?
Maybe someone else has a better memory but it is my understanding the bus companies do pay some kind of stipend for Osborne and the stop they make in the south dunes.
Now... those are 30 minute stops. The bus/car/tourist drops in and then out.
Hiking groups are a different story. Not only are they possibly taking up valuable parking space for an extended period of time, but they are absolutely using our resources as much as any ATV rider (more actually, have you witnesed how long footprints last versus an ATV?).
Wherever they park, they should be made to pay. And, according to the rules, they are supposed to be paying.
Dano and his group have always flaunted their abililty to beat the system.
I will do some checking on how they determine that a car parked at Osborne is camped while waiting for the return of the hikers, or just parked for a quick break.
I also intend to do everything in my power to make sure that the participants in the CBD's planned hike each pay their $25 use fee for trampling our dunes.
