Woman dies, teen hurt in off-road collision

CATHERAL CITY

A 35-year-old woman was killed and a 14-year-old girl injured in an off-road vehicle accident near Cathedral City.
Carmen Monares of Santa Ana died Sunday after the all-terrain vehicle she was riding on struck another ATV, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.

The two-vehicle collision killed Monares, who was a passenger and injured a 14-year-old girl, also from Santa Ana.

The accident occurred Sunday afternoon in the desert northeast of Date Palm Drive and Varner Road.

According to police the woman and the girl were on ATVs traveling east along a maintenance road when they struck each other.

Monares, who authorities said was not wearing a helmet, sustained head injuries in the crash. She was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

Paramedics took the girl to Desert hospital and characterized her injuries as, "moderate."

The girl was wearing a helmet.

The Cathedral City Police Department is still investigating the cause accident. They said they do not believe alcohol was a factor.

You'll read it and see the immediate "mistakes" - I posted it for educational purposes.

Another heart broken family affected from a terrible accident.

I ride in this area time to time and see a lot children, I'd say 12-16 range on quads 5K to 7k in value, flogging through the whoops.............. with NO HELMET ON!

How awful.

My heart goes out to the families.

DJThunder… I am not terribly familiar with Cathedral City. This area where they were riding and you have ridden… what is that riding area called?

Edom Hill (The Shovel), if you are east or west bound on Interstate 10, it is the Date Palm exit. The hill has a large impression of a shovel on the side of it.

And...I don't recommend riding there - All the issues discussed on this board regarding riding safety are violated there.

Fast passes by trailers, no helmets, kids riding quads too big for them, etc, etc.

I would agree about NOT riding there, too many people who ride double, NO Helmets ,
too large of ATV for there age/size. Basically many who just don't follow the rules, then someone gets mangled or killed it makes the headlines. Which makes Us all look BAD. icon_sad.gif
Someone had to be Medivaced out this weekend near Gilman Springs road (Between Moreno Valley and San Jacinto) Of course it made the newspaper, another serious injury to an ATV rider. No info about being in a "ILLEGAL" riding area or if they had the proper gear. angryfire.gif

Its right up the street where I live.
When I take off from my house I will ride through there to get to the trails that I take to get to Yucca valley.
And yes there are too many idiots that ride double no helmets ect... you name it the idiots are doing it.
Its private property and it is posted, but nobody obeys the law untill the law rolls up in their enclosed trailer and unloads their quads.

I got a return call from a very nice guy at the Palm Springs BLM office... a LEO no less...

He said that the area described here is a mixture of tribal lands, private land and BLM land. While the safety laws may not pertain on private lands (riding double, no helmet, etc.), the people riding on the private property are breaking tresspassing laws... unless they have written permission from the owner.

Do they (give permission)? I ask. He's never seen it and can't imagine a land owner taking on that liability. I can't either.

He said there is a lot of "day use" riding there, and enforcement is not always easy. He also said they do a lot of educating and less ticketing, whenever possible.

We talked about the OHV park being built in Riverside and he wants to work with us to get the word out on that... going to send a couple people my way that might be great for giving input. Just a couple of riders that he stopped one day for illegal riding but didn't give a citation... a couple end users that the project needs.

He also talked about Windy Point and how it was a bad thing when that was closed. He said the riding area was so close to being perfectly managed that it wouldn't have taken much to get it made into a "real" OHV spot.

We talked about what all the recent rains must have done to the lizard that got that place shut down. Hope they're good swimmers icon_wink.gif

All in all, a very fruitful conversation.
