Darn it, I knew I was going to get conflicting answers
So is it 15 or 14. I don't have the quad right here with me or else I would just go out and count for myself.
Help?

According to ServiceHonda.com, front sprocket (23801-HN1-000) is 15 tooth. Looked in the service manual, but no real good picture.

I'm pretty sure the 05 counter shaft sprocket is a 14 tooth. From what I hear, the counter shaft spline count is also different for the 05. The 04 is a 15 tooth.

Up to an 04 400ex has a 15 tooth. The 05's have 14 tooth sprockets. And yes, the splines are different as well.

Does this mean the 2005 gearbox has different gear ratios than the 2004's?
Thanks,
Frank

Yes. They added reverse, and the gear box is a little taller than the 04 and below. SO they went with the smaller sprocket to counter the taller gears. My wifes 05 400ex will pull my fat butt around no problem. It is completely stock. It will keep up with my brothers 04, and I have built his motor and regeared his.
