Slappy, this past Saturday night I was at pad 2.5 on Gecko, snoozing in my sleeping bag on Mother G's soft sand (as I always do, no motorhome for me), and in the middle of the night I heard a pack of ??? howling, growling, barking, and generally having a loud time not far from us. My guess would be Coyotes. Do you agree? My understaning is that Foxes (not the female human kind) don't run in packs. And, if it was Coyotes that I heard, why don't we ever see them in the day time? It sounded like a lot of them. They must have dens they hide in during the day. Is that correct? I've never seen a Coyote or a Fox during the day (not at Glamis, but I have at other places), but several times I have heard them (one or the other?) during the night. Can you shed some light on this with your expertise?
Thanks,
Doug

Hi there KG, Slappy glad dat you asked. Slappy has heard them quite a bit too in da past, and have seen Mr. Coyote trottin along in da middle of da dunes, right in da middle of the day time. Slappy has actually duned wit Mr. Coyote, and wit them long legs, he goes pretty good. Mr. Coyote usually be hangin out in da washes where there be more growth, and can have dens in dat area due to da harder, more coarse sand dat holds up better and be more sturdy. You could see Mr. Coyote in washes or smaller, rollin dunes dat be in da middle of Mother G, dats where Slappy seen him most a da time. Funny thing be, each time Slappy has seen Mr. Coyote, it was around hi noon. You probably heard them in da flat land West of where you was KG, their be quite a few bunny's, and plenty more water down dat direction.

Here be a couple pictures of a den dat Slappy found awhile back, and quite sure dat it be Ms. Fox's. You probably won't be seein Ms. Fox durin da day, she be likin her privacy, and most a da time only be comin out durin da night.

a year or two ago I spotted a coyote in the dunes (Buttercup), early in the morning, rode after him for about 2 miles!

Yeah Doug, where was the Slappy story... user posted image

I seen a coyote in the dunes on the way to the plane crash site from Roadrunner. He was fast too, and was gone as fast as I saw him.
Sometimes it pays to be the leader, as I was the only one to see him. user posted image

I've seen a coyote in the middle of the day down by Gordon's. He was cruising through the dunes along the east side.
