A perfect morning.

72 degrees as you hop out of your sleeping bag. The sun is peeking up over the horizon as you wake up your buddies. There is dew on the seats of your bikes but that doesn’t matter. Your going duning and a little water never hurt no one. You get on your gear and pull on your boots one at a time. No one talks. Talk isn’t needed. Your going duning. A quick chug of water to wet your whistle and its time. You grab your gloves, your goggles, and your helmet and climb on your bike. One kick is all it takes for the throbbing sounds of combustion to fill the air. As you pull on your helmet and wiggle your fingers into your gloves, you notice that no one is out yet and the dunes are smooth. It’s a great day to be in Glamis. Everyone is ready and you click into first gear, easing out the clutch and starting to roll forward. Initial plans are to take it easy at first so you can warm up but those plans don’t last very long. Second gear then third. You feel the cool morning breeze through your helmet and look up to see the most beautiful blue sky that anyone has ever witnessed. Everyone has formed a line now and you’re in the lead. It feels good to be in the dunes again, dodging pucker bushes and jumping the ridges of sand behind them. Fourth gear and your really starting to move. You make it to the first small dune and carve a diagonal line to the top dropping into third and checking behind you to make sure that no one has fallen behind. No one has and they all have the same wide eyed grin that can only come from riding in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The Imperial Sand Dunes. A.K.A. Glamis! You grab a handful of throttle and jump the lip landing several feet down the dune. As you reach the bottom, you again look over your shoulder to see the last person in line floating in mid air then landing without a jolt in the soft Glamis sand. You row through the gears as you throw up a 30 foot roost behind you. The way opens up in front of you and you almost hit fifth till you see the drop off. Front and back tires locked up, you slide and it looks like your gonna need to grow wings in a hurry. You hit the drop off pushing down with all your might as you go over. Down you go. Safe this time. Your heart is beating in your ears and you just got a double dose of adrenaline. Now your dunin! You head out to the big dunes towards Osborne cutting back and fourth and grinning for all your worth. Now comes the huge mounds of sand, the big dunes. You pick your line and start climbing, your heart in your throat as you go over the first blind razorback. You know nothing is there yet you’re still nervous about not seeing the other side. Your over and accelerate up the slip face, throwing up a fountain of sand. Made it! Your at the top and head for that big bowl that’s just over the ridge. A quick backwards glance shows you that the crew is ready to step it up a notch. You hit the ridge in third lifting your front tire over the razorback and riding a wheelie into the bowl. What a monster! A perfect oval, banked just like Daytona. Its time for fifth, sixth if you’ve got it. Your 200-RPM under the rev limiter in fifth. This is what its all about. The front end is getting real busy and the rear wants to swap ends. No matter. 80mph never felt so good. The bowl is filled with the reverberations of horsepower, engines screaming to their limits. Time stops. Sound stops. All that matters is the ride. You hear nothing but silence as you come around for the last time. You look over your shoulder to the other side of the bowl to see your buddies strung out and hauling a**. Up to the top of the bowl and over the ridge for a repeat performance as another perfectly smooth bowl invites you to sample its depths. Up and down, back and fourth. The track is never this fun! You realize that you’re a little low on fuel so you turn back towards camp, a line of jumping, carving, bellowing bikes like ants in an ant pile. Its understood that last one back to camp has to cook breakfast so it turns into a race. Four different riders, four different lines. The ground is blurred with speed and sun and living life. As you roar into camp, coasting the bike to a stop next to your truck, you realize that not only was it a perfect morning, all you need is a full tank of gas and its gonna be a perfect afternoon.

Fireball, Slappy is gonna get a hold of ya for some information. Take a bow. user posted image

ARE YOU AWAKE YET???
Fireballsocal
Thank you everyone who voted for that story and who congradulated me. I can't believe that story actually won against many of the others featured. Alot of that came out of my head at work after reading Slappy's King of the hill story and a piece by Dune sort of along the same lines. Now I'm interested in what the prize is! A meeting with the man? A ride on the McSlappmachine? I get to be Slappy for a day? Thanks again to all who voted on any of the winners and I'm glad you enjoyed the story.
dunechick
