Any budy no if you can still get to Mexico by following the cannel south and are you able to leave your bikes on this side and cross over? Have not been down there since 1990s and they had built a fence across the cannel so you could not get there any more.
Thanks

I haven't personally done it - but the people I've talked to who have say there is a gate in the fence which isn't locked. You just have to open it to get through and then close it behind when you're done.

I have done it twice this year alone. You go down the canal or just west of the canal (otherside of the ridge). Once the ridge ends, you run into the side of the canal, then proceed about a mile thru the large wall/fence. There is nothing to open, it hasn't been locked in over 5 years. Drive thru, turn an immediate right and head to the parking lot area. It used to be you could drive right onto the parking lot, but now it is totally fence in. So you have to drive around the parking lot to the main road, jump on it and pay for parking like a normal auto. It is easy, and always a fun trip.

You never drive into Mexico, unless you are lost. Sorry about your friends Hijack, but I have been doing this ride every year since 1999, with no problems.

The one thing you can do to make this ride more enjoyable, don't drive down the canal road from I-8, stay just west of it, there is a nice dust free sand wash road that is a fun cruise.

Over Veterans Day a Border Patrol stopped us as we went through the gate and down the hill and said locals had been reported "harassing ATVer’s”. He didn’t elaborate on how. I’ve been a few times this year and have never seen any other bikes in the parking lot or on the canal road going or leaving. I don’t think I’d do it at night, but have friends who have. Parking is $3.00 a bike or it there’s a big group they usually cut you a break on the price. They’ll let you chain to the fence where they can see them. Never had any issues or problems the times I went and have taken the wife and kids, but most likely won’t anymore.

I'm with alxcook. I've been going down there for years and never had any problems. Other than getting back onto the US side before the border closes. icon_surprised.gif

Riding into mexico = bad idea.

Riding to mexico = tasty tacos and cheap drinks!

Riding into mexico though the dunes means you risk having the BP confiscate your vehicle if the banditios don't get it first. And there has been a LOT of smuggling down there lately as the BP has done a good job of closing off all their other routes forcing them into the dunes...plus the new bridge over I-8 is attractive to them even though the BP watch it like hawks.

Riding to mexico means crossing legally at Algodones. Nice town - quite possibly the friendliest cleanest and most enjoyable border town I've ever been in (and I've been in more than my share.) Even friends of mine who don't like Mexico don't mind going across there for lunch. There are a bunch of nice restaurants and some outstanding taco stands with dirt cheap food.

The parking is a scam run by the Quechan tribe that wants the dunes closed and who run the Paradise casino. Haven't been down in a year or two but in the past you could take your receipt from parking to the casino and they'd give you an equal amount of nickles back free (expecting you to loose them and some more money in the casino.) I always just got my nickels and then walked out - won't give them a penny since they are fighting with the CBD to get the dunes closed.

Doesn't the border close at 10pm?? We are always out before dark, and we are usually a very big group, always over 10 buggies. Safety in numbers maybe??

The parking lot closes at 8 PM AZ time if Iremember correctly.
