All right all you pros.. Is Suzuki gonna step up to the 450 plate or not. I cant keep waiting on more power and Im pretty loyal to the Yellow bikes.. But I cant keep getting beat like this..
Anyone know from reliable sources that the new bike is gonna come out soon???

there is a section on zcentral about it, and so far i guess there is one in production and there has been certain pros testing it out, but i stopped following it. Drop in aa athena 434 kit

Lose weight.. Bah.. I have and I am..
Drop some big kit in it - Bah..
Its not cost effective for me to Build up a thumper - By the time you get to the level of the new 450s in suspension and motor - I would be better off just selling mine and buying a 450. I need reliability and stock motors are just that.

id go with some laeger a-arms and new PEP's.....
that would make you faster than a 450, seriously
its not always about the power, gotta handle it too
Chummin
Feb 20 2005, 12:22 PM
Thats 2 grand.
The cost effectiveness isnt there. I can sell mine plus that 2K and get a 450. Sure the suspension would be better on the Z - but only a tad better then the current 450s on the market with the power to boot.
Its much cheaper to upgrade the current 450 shocks then it is to toss the shocks on the 400 and buy new ones..
Thats my point.. This bike isnt ever gonna be my primary ride in Glamis and I dont race on a pro or wanna be pro scale. I dont want to get in to that whole scenario where Im dumping cash in to something Im gonna replace in a year as it is.
Know what I mean. Im not looking to beef what I have up - that takes away from buyint the next bike.

no stock suspension compares to a aftermarket arm/swinger, shock combo...
I have full Laeger/PEP R and a YFZ450 (which is stock)
the 450's stock shocks are 'ok' for being stock, but dont compare to PEP's
either way, its just about having fun and riding

I get what your saying and I agree. But the stock 450 stuff is 100 times better then the stock 400 I have now.. My point being is that I can just get the 450 and be 100 times better suspension wise and have the power.
Hince why I was asking the dates for the release of the new 450 yellow one.. I can wait if its not to far out..

Hey Chummin,
I feel your pain and understand what you're saying. I have been trying to rebuild a quad for a guy for about a year now and he had the motor on his Raptor BUILT!!! and lost the paperwork. Everytime I turn around, I find out something new that sets us back and with him going in and out to sea all the time...well...you know. I will say this, with common sizes and bolt on stuff...bulding up performance wise is pretty safe. the big things with quads and bikes is the radiator. If you go up too much, you need a bigger, better radiator, so keep that in mind if you start pricing things out. Next, Is your motor blown or was it just the tranny? If the motor is ok, you can drop a point in compression by replacing the barrel gasket around the cylinder. Have you done a pipe/filter/jet kit? I put on the ALBA kit on my wife's Z400 as per the feedback I got from guys on here and really like it. I also re-geared it. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! You're not going to be the fastest guy out there but the low end will get you there quicker.
If you want, we can talk at TT or you can PM me. I'm not a pro mechanic with years of quad/bike experience, but I do know my way around and don't mind helping you out (I was a pro auto and aircraft mechanic for over 12 years). Being in SD with nothing but time on my hands...we can figure this out...

I have a FMF pipe, K&N, and Jetting. We just finished rebuilding the trans - and the stock gaskets went back in. Rriderr told me about the base gasket from the DRZ a day to late.
Gearing - I have a +2 on the back(42) and a -1 on the front(13). It hauls the mail in torque and 1st gear is useless cept to wheely. Pulls olds in 3rd.
Dean - what can you tell me about the 440 kit.. And I mean everything. From the carb to the jetting - from the pulling the head to putting it back.
How much time - and how much money. I have a feeling thats about my only choice.. Just found out - time grows short -

a good port/flow of the head, high compression piston, a set of cams and a 39mm FCR carb would make that Z400 run good, close if not better than 450's

Feb 21 2005, 09:21 PM
Most people on Zcentral will say 450 kit.
The athena 434 kit is the next step from the 450 kits.
You can get it on zcentral for $565. It comes with athena cylinder(bigger water jackets and nickasiled), 12.3:1 JP piston, wrist pin, circlips, and gaskets. Youo can get it from a guy with the screen name advantage cycle. It comes in a box with everything you need.
Pep LT shocks and leager arms is way way better then any stock 450 suspension. But is way to expensive.
Burgard +2 arms or +3 off zcentral for $420 shipped and works w or without rezzies setup for you would be the best cheap way to go. Then a rear rebuild by TCS or elka(elka i hear is cheaper).
or dont do the suspension and just do the motor and add webcams, cdi and carb. Webcams are way better then hotcams(not sure on price), alba cdi for $100 works for me, and a FCR 40 or 41 carb for around $400 or edelbrock 38mm would be good.
Or just adding a carb, doing the drz gasket mod, adding webcams, and a cdi and you should be set.

Maybe stock, but you won't run with a piped YFZ or TRX.
Won't happen. Trust me, I know plenty who race them professionally, and they just couldn't keep up after the 450's came out.
And then you still have to figure in that you are undersuspended compared to the new Honda or Yami.

Yeah but the new 05' Z has more travel then the 450r, not the yfz though, i dont remember the exact specs though.
Its all about the rider.
when i had my cams and basegasket mod i beat 2 honda 450s, up the hill. One was bone stock and one was piped and jetted with paddles. I ussually got a bad start and i cought up through the whoops and was about the same all the way up. that was agaisnt 2 diferetn 450rs. I raced desertbound and he beat everyone everytime.

Maybe so, and everyone has their preference of colors.
Pound for pound, the YFZ is still the fastest and easiest to get there.
I have seen a piped YFZ outrun a Z450 with porting, big carb, and all the rest of the goodies. Pro class local races. Riders were pretty equal.

Doug Gust could cream any one of us on a stock Z400. He's an animal.
He's got much more work done than a simple motor kit. And the motor is a lit fuse. It only has to run for 1 weekend before getting torn down and rebuilt.
When I get my own mechanic, that's how I want it.

i think for the average guy (spell that: recreational duner) the YFZ is the hot set up. cam mod, jet kit, filter and pipe and the YFZ will smoke most anything out there. I have a Z..and its a great bike!
but dollar for dollar invested...no way it will come close to the yami. ive built and ridden both quads...so im speaking from my own (recreational) experience here!
