its an 04 warrior. first time she was rideing around camp, got very hot and she complained about NO power. second time it was 5 mins. into a group ride. it was hot enough to make dipstick smoke and blister my thumb when i touched the crank case! parked it for rest of trip! i picked up a 4 stroke to avoid 2 stroke life! looking for imput ASAP, going back in less than 2 weeks, THANKS ONCE AGAIN TO THIS BOARD AND THE IMPUT I GET FROM IT! The jetting may be way too lean,I dont know too much about 4-strokes and their jetting, but i know if the jetting is set lean it will start to run hot,be careful that you dont seize the engine.
hope this helps

Aaron,
Why don't you ride it for 30 minutes or so to see what it does. When I came up along the bike it sounded like it was winding out, as if it was in too low of a gear.

well she says she wasnt winding it out and bike is stock so that so that should rule out jetting. im hopeing no damage has occured

at glamis most bikes with stock jetting are lean. i had to go up 3 sizes on my 400ex for it to run good at glamis.

my bike was riding hot as a mofo, only on sunday after the ride/adventure from hell. it sat for about 45 minutes, and from wash 4 through the dunes to the other side of vendor flats it was already WAY hot.

The wet sand could definetly add a load to the motor. Also, as mentioned above, these things are lean from the factory. They do this to get the green stickers. How many trip have you made with it? Is this the first time it has ran this hot? Have you made any changes between this trip and last? Did the fuel consumption change?

Stock is too lean for the altitude at Glamis...........

ok lets starthere; she had not hit ANY dunes yet, will wet sand make a dif on flat ground???? how many trips; a GOOD friend handed it over when it was 11 months old. so we have 3 trips on it and he had maybe 8 and this is the first time any heat has been noticed. only changes between this trip and last were cleaning and oiling air filter and changing oil seal behind sprocket due to oil leak. as far as fuel useage not a clue. so as it sits it is under warranty but there is no way in hell yamaha would get it back to us by march 4th our next trip. so jetting is no thing for sure but has damage ocured to engine???? how to tell???? im sure changing oil is the first thing on list. CRANK CASE BLISTERED MY THUMB! IS THIS FROM STOCK JETTING AND WET SAND?????????????????????????????????????????? THANKS for sticking with the long read, Aaron

Is it possible you over oiled the filter causing a rich condition? I know this sounds strange, but an overly rich motor will get hot as well. If you are anywhere near san diego, you are more than welcome to bring it by. I could probably help a bit more if I had it in my hands. I don't really have anything going on tomorrow or friday. I will be at the dunes this weekend though.

I don't know much about 4-strokes, I am living the 2-stroke life (and loving it!)

but have you considered a restriction in your exhaust system? The case could be heating up due to the close proximity to the header pipe. I had a catalytic converter shut down on my old CJ-7 and experienced the same symptoms. I would recommend that you disconnect the pipe and see how the quad runs. At the very least you will be able to rule out the exhaust from the list of suspects. I would check the valves next.

My guess is the jetting but spray some carb cleaner around the intake and carbs on the outside and see if the motor revs, if it does may very well have a air leak and the extra air is making the motor run lean.
Also have you ever adjusted the valves since you bought it ?? They need adjusted after the first oil change.

was the choke left on? it was cold this past weekend (i was there) so maybe the rider forgot it was on after warm up.

lack of water
lack of oil
lack of fuel(lean)
lack of air (to much oil on the filter)
can't think of much more that would do it..

Yup, that pretty much sums it up. A blown headgasket would make it run hot as well.

Check the oil. It smelled riding behind her on the way back to camp. Thing is definately burning oil.
Jet check, and put the vent tube back to the airbox. I swear that is some of, if not all of, your problem.
Oil low would cause it to run hot.
Then burn a trip to ride next to her and make sure she is in the correct gear. She was way up in the revs, but I think that was because it was running poorly.

Check the mufler bearings. The blaster's mufler bearings looked a little worn. Maybe that could be it...?
Bad mufler bearing=Excess heat.

I think that bike is too new, but I know someone that had a 250r with a bad rear caliper seized the bike 3 times. You mentioned "she" could it be operator error unlocked parking brake or possible riding the rear brake.

well ray had also brought up the question "are the rear brakes free" i said of course, thought it to be a silly question. but does it have a brake light and would we notice in the day if it does??? that is quite a good question! leaving in a few hours for G, taking bike leaving daughter. we shall see.
