Kevin Koppel Recovery Fund
On March 5, 2005 a terrible tragedy took place. Our friend Kevin Koppel left his campsite at Glamis on his quad to go on a ride with his friends. Now you have to keep in mind that Kevin loved to ride and he was very fast, but always in control. His friends say that Kevin is one of the best riders that they know. He waved good bye to his wife Stephanie and 6 year old daughter Hannah who were going in their Rhino (off road golfcart) a different route and would meet up with the rest of the gang in a little while at a specific destination. Little did any of us know what was about to take place. Kevin’s friend Troy was in his dune buggy leading the way, followed by good friend Carlos and several quads including Kevin were behind. They were going about 40 mph through some very bumpy terrain when Kevin pulled up to the left side of Carlos. Kevin then proceded to pass Carlos and then about 200 yards to the right he noticed some of his other friends who wanted to join in on this ride. Now no one knows for sure, but all we can think of is that when Kevin saw his friends to the right he turned to look and pulled his handlebars to the right unintentionally. In a split second Kevin crashed into the front of Carlos’s buggy and was knocked unconscious. It all happened so fast. When Carlos jumped out and ran to Kevin’s side he was completely unconscious and had quit breathing. Within seconds his breathing started again but we all knew that this was very critical. Kevin’s friend Phil rushed back to camp to get help. His son Dustin was taken to the scene and immediately was at his dad’s side and was praying for him along with many other friends. It took almost an hour for the life light to get to the scene. They rushed him to Palm Desert Regional Medical Center. He is in stage 1 Trauma and is in very good hands. His son Dustin left his Dad’s side to go back to the camp and wait for his mom to come back so that he could tell her the news. Stephanie, Dustin, and Hannah immediately rushed to the hospital. They arrived to find out that Kevin is in a self induced coma. A cat scan of his brain was done that night and results showed that there was possibly severe brain damage. His wife Stephanie refused to believe this simply because when she talks to him he responds to her by moving his fingers and his toes. The doctor agreed and sent him the following day for a MRI which is supposed to be more detailed. The MRI showed that there was indeed some improvement and that there was hope. Stephanie was told that the next step was for Kevin to open his eyes if even for a second just to show that there was some brain function going on. Everyone immediately started praying that God would just help him to open his eyes. On March 8, 2005 at 8:25 Steph was talking to Kevin encouraging him to open his eyes. She told him that if he could hear her to please try and open his eyes and his hands were trembling and then with a lot of effort his eyes started moving and he did indeed open them for a second. There was fortunately a doctor in the room as well to witness this miracle. Stephanie, their family, and their friends have been by his side non stop talking to him, praying for him and just encouraging him. We have had thousands praying for him and we are seeing God answer our prayers. We know that Kevin is going to get through this, but it is up to God and time.
Kevin turned to Christ eight months ago and has seen him work many miracles. At about the same time he started a roofing business. He ran the business and Stephanie does all the office work. It is just starting to take off and become really successful. We know that the most important thing right now is for Stephanie to be by Kevin’s side. We want to help out the family so that the last thing that they have to worry about right now is finances.
