how does that Yamaha run? thinking about getting one. They've got a reputation as being rocket fast, but I heard someone say they don't handle/turn too great. It's either a YZ400 or a Honda XR 400.

More importantly, Is it light enough to use deep in the dunes?

and I was asking him how he likes his Yamaha YZ400

I love it!!! Can't say enough great things about this bike. The only thing wrong with it is it's not a 426! This bike will beat an XR hands down in anything but tight technical trails. The xr is a great bike but can't come close to the YZ in power, suspension, and handeling. I will admit to having trouble out in the deep dunes where the sand is xtra soft. Those skinny tires just sink right in. Its not impossible to navigate out there, especially if your going pretty fast. Higher speed lets you ride on top of the sand instead of sinking in. I can tell you though that an XR will do much worse in the dunes, especially since it isn't water cooled. My turning range isn't as tight as a two stroke 250's but I have no problem sticking a foot down and rotating 180 degrees during a turn. As far as being a rocket, the only two wheeler thats beaten me was a 500 and I've even beat a few of those up olds and at the drags. I'm a 200lb guy also. Its the perfect do everything bike. Plunk around up in the mountains or rail around your local motocross track. This bike will do it!

honda is coming out with a 450 4strok motorcross bike. it is fats and light.

I almost bought a 500 instead of my YZ but the YZ handles so much better and you don't have to mix gas. The YZ is pretty fast also. I've beat 500's at the drags and at comp/olds.

If I was gonna do motox or something like that, I'd want something that handles better, but for the dunes/desert give me some horsepower baby!! Just point and shoot. Those guys you raced musta been squids to not be able to beat you. I dont mean that your 400 is slow, just that it shouldnt be in the same class as a CR/KX/KTM 500 2-stroke power wise. Thats why they race in the 250 class. Plus, I'm 6'2" and weigh like 260lbs... It takes alot of power just to get my ass movin!!
