Have any of you guys ever tried fishing the canal and backwaters at gordons while you're not duning? I'm an avid fisherman and it looks like prime location for some big kitties and bass. Not sure of the legalities of it all though, any info is appreciated.

From what I hear the canals are loaded with fish, but few people fish them. According to people on another site sdfish.com the canals have cat fish, small mouth, large mouth, carp, tilapia, and crappie
Would be cool to kick back at night and wet a line while drinking a beer.

Tip:
When fishing, hook the line to your whip (only if you have a "Buggy whip" of course) using a little fishing bell. Keeps the line high in the air to prevent it from laying in the dirt. It will also give you a little "jingle".

EDIT*
* And if you hook "the BIG ONE" you will have a couple hundred horses to make sure it doesn't get away.

I like to fish too, and we camp next to the canal just never thought of fishin there. Maybe I can start catching fish instead of drinkin like one.

Does anyone know if it's legal?

There are always people fishing the canals here in Yuma. A few weeks ago I was at the Imperial Dam and saw people fishing the All-American (the canal though the dunes) right where it left the Colorado - so I assume there are fish there.
Not sure about the legality other than the canals are private property and posted as no-tresspassing...never looked if they were posted no fishing as well.
I'm mainly just good a drowning worms though so I've never thought about trying it.

A little quick google search found:
http://www.iid.com/aboutiid/env-weed.htmlQUOTE
Although fishing is permitted in the Imperial Valley canal system, possession of live grass carp in California is illegal. Possession of grass carp requires a special legal permit granted through the Department of Fish and Game for the sole purpose of aquatic weed control. If you catch a grass carp, you are required by law to return it to the water. Failure to abide by this law may result in fine and/or imprisonment. The current penalty for illegal possession and transport of grass carp is a fine of $5,000 and/or up to one year in county jail.
So it sounds like you can fish away in the canals as long as you toss back any "grass carp" you happen to catch whatever they are.

Here's some more info:
http://www.fishingnetwork.net/socal/allamer.shtmlQUOTE
Channel and BIG Flathead Catfish are the main target here. There are also some Striped and Largemouth Bass, Panfish and Huge Carp here. Lot's off Bullfrogs too if you enjoy frog gigging. There are hundreds of miles of smaller canals that run off the main canal. All offer good fishing. Even the smallest trickle can have Big Catfish hiding in the deep-pooled "drops".

Just for your information, I work for the Imperial Irrigation District and yes it is legal to fish in all the canals. Stay outside of any fenced locations, ie the hydro plants along the all american canal. The grass carp shouldn't be a problem as they are strickly vegitarian and eat the weeds and such in the canals. Plenty of catfish, large mouth bass, and stripers out by Gordons. Only a valid California fishing license displayed on your person is required, Fish and Game patrol these canals daily. The no trespassing signs are primarily for legality issues.
Have fun.

Midpinto, I fished in the canal on the west side of the bridge that crosses over the concrete canal, it was super hot that day, so we could only stand to be in the sun for a couple hours, so we gave up, we did have a couple bites though.
I still keep my poles in the trailer, I am down anytime to drop a line in the water, I have actually been looking for someone to go to Cuyamaca, and all the lakes around here with, I dont have a boat, but I like to just hang out, relax and catch some fishies.
Are there fish in both the natural and concrete canals? maybe I will bring out some bait next trip. What do you think would work the best, we tried nightcrawlers last time.

I want to see if Lake Sutherland and Henshaw allow it too, I am close to them as well.
