I'm looking to replace the shocks on my 90 Quadzilla and are wondering which one's are the best bang for the buck? I have been looking at the Works shocks with the rezzies, but they seem a little pricey. I mainly ride dunes and ride in the desert sometimes. My rear shock is totally wasted so it will get replaced first. Thanks

Go to Z400central.com, there are lots of people doing rebuilds on shocks, and you might be able to find a stock Z400 shock that could work, I don't know if it will. They have the knowledge to help you.

I like my Works tripple rates alot better than the stockers.
Have them respring and revalve the rear.
Quicksilver
Hey Permagrin, those shocks look awesome. So those are the Works with the rezzies? Which ones did you buy and who did you get them through? I was at the Works website and their prices seemed a little high. Someone told me I could get them cheaper elsewhere, but not sure where to go?
ChuckZilla
I hate to be a thread jacker but since there are two Zilla owners in here I have to ask.
I've gone thru two sets V-force carbon reeds in about 30 hrs on my 87'.
The last set lasted about 5 hrs. I notice that my zillla backfires a lot when I'm starting it (kicking). Two times now I have shut off a perfectly good running bike only to have it backfire on start up and destroy my reeds. Any comments? It's getting expensive here. angryfire.gif

Yeah, Chuckzilla, I had that happen to me at Dumont a week and a half ago. Mine were the V-Force carbon fiber reeds also. I just upgraded to the newer V Force 3 and will see what happens. I shut my quad off and could never get it restarted. I kept kicking it over and I think the engine got full of fuel and blew the reeds out. I felt the airbox lid pop when it backfired. I have mine jetted too rich and will lean it out a little when I get it back together again. You got any idea why yours did it?
Quicksilver
ChuckZilla, here is my post from last week about the reeds:

I was thinking of calling Tudorsperformance since the owner is big into the Quadzillas. He might know what the problem is.
ChuckZilla
Thanks for answering ZillaDude, actually Tudor is my builder now and he says the Zillas are hard on reeds from the get go. When I got my last replacement set of reeds from him he said he "thought" that Tassinari had improved them, but that set blew up quicker and more violently than the first set in one 5th the time. I noticed when putting my bike back together last time when I had tape over the intake that when cycling the motor around there is a really strong pulse pushing back toward the intake. I know this is 2-stroke fundamentals and that it is normal but damn, I was barely turning the motor over and it seemed like it wanted to blow that tape clean off. I can only imagine what it's like at running rpms let alone during backfire. shock.gif I wonder if porting is beneficial for these bikes in this regard. And would a timing adjustment mellow those backfires? I have to call Tudor this week sometime, I'll post his answers to these questions.
Permagrin
I dont have much to say about Jeff Tudor dry.gif
I got my head from him and thats all I will get from that shop.
My advise and from my experiance is to off those reeds and cage and put the stockers back in . Jeff fabs his own 87 adaptor cage for the mototess and that may or may not have something to do with it? Its actually a 88 and up cage because mototess doesnt make one for the 87.
I would not have him port my cylinder either. you are better off keeping it stock for reliabilty IMHO.
Raise the compression a little with a 62cc dome and coolhead, Main jet it 2 sizes up from stock, lower the front sprocket to a 12 /42 with a PT pipe and 9 paddle haulers....and you might be able to catch me laughing.gif j/k

As far as the shocks

They are from a seller on ebay and you can have the spring rates for your bike and weight.
The rear I had rebuilt locally.
Zuki
I run Vforce reeds and 215 pounds of compression and have never had a problem with them. This was my 4th season with this top end and this setup. I would call Trinity for advise ask for Jimmy.

nice chummin....night and day difference over the stock excuses for shocks
Lucky
While I would concur on that for an MX track, not sure a duning Banshee really needs PEP. And he was saying Works were expensive. IMO for duning the new Elka dune editions or TCS from Rivermobster would be a nice cost benefit ratio on shocks. I have the Works with Rez front and rear they work far better than stock. Think I paid $550 for the rear and fronts used for $250, but I could have gotten TCS or Elka with a rear rebuild for that price.
