Ahh, the hippie mecca that is Burning Man.

With that many assorted hippies, enviros and other "alternative livestyle" types around you'd think they'd be pretty good about practicing what they preach. After all even the burning man site says:

We are creating a city and adopting and modifying Leave No Trace techniques on a massive urban scale. The best way to enjoy the Black Rock Desert is to pick a spot that looks as if no one has been there before you. It enhances your sense of adventure and uniqueness of experience. We will each be able to feel as if we're the first one in our spot year after year if we all take a part in restoring the playa surface to the condition in which we found it.

The Earth Guardians are committed to working year-round to ensure the conservation of the Black Rock Desert's unique resources - biological, cultural, and historical.  Part of the beauty of the Playa is its emptiness.

Unfortunatly the satelites have a different story to tell:

Compare to Glamis (Gecko to be exact) at the same magnification:

Or how about comparing to Olds and the washes at the same resolution:

So....tell me again. Who leaves a larger lasting impression from their activities?

Those sat photos are cool, I just spent two hours retracing old trails and party spots I have been going to since I was a kid headbang.gif

Guess I don't get it.
What is supposed to be showing on the Gerlach photos?

I saw some 'grooves' (not sure what that means at this magnification), but what am I supposed to see?

Got to wonder how long it takes to clean up after the burning man. Do they REALLY make as good as when they arrived?
My soap box is trash. If you haul it out you have already done a BIG part in dune conservation.

If you haul out someone else's trash you are already a conservationist.

What you're seeing are the very kind of "tracks" and "trails" or "roads" that the environmentalists claim we leave all over the place.

Yet compare the dunes at the same magnification to their site. Even at the highest zoom level in the dunes the most you can see is the occasional kiddie track in camping areas. At Black Rock you see an area that would stretch from Gecko to the Washes FILLED with tracks - tracks that aren't going to just go away....and even if you bulldoze them under you've then disrupted the entire area on a MUCH deeper level.
