Okay, now that it's too hot for most prople to go to the dunes, who on this list from AZ goes to the Cinders in Flagstaff??? I was bored the other day, and was thinking it would be cool to go to the Cinders, and maybe watch some buggies go up $100 hill. But I don't know if people still go out there anymore.

Never been myself but I see and hear of people going up there all the time. My rail has been with it's previous owner. I've never taken it 'cause I don't want to tear up my paddles. I had an old set I should have kept just for that reason.
The lava rock is pretty tough on equipt from what I hear. Tears up the paint and paddles.
Just what I've heard, don't take it as fact. I do know the original paddles on my rail were pretty beat up and the people I bought it from said they went to the cinders a lot.

They are fun and its nice to get out of the heat. When I have been there didn't see that many buggies climbing the hill. That hill is very dangerous for buggies and jeeps. I have seen several roll. The hills can be far steeper than the sand dunes and not as forgiving. Lots of whoops.

altitude also plays a matter in jetting and tuning

I heard there was a hill climb contest up there 1st week in Aug. That would be cool to watch.

I used to go Jeepin there alot when I was in college (96-99). It used to get pretty crowded with 4X4's(not like glamis) and was fun to watch guys ATTEMPT to make the hill.
Last time I rode and camped there was a few years ago(2001 or 02) with my banshee. It was awesome, but I ruined the paddles on my bike. It is a beautiful place to ride and has some challenging(steep high-altitude) terrain. It is crazy to do those hills in a carburated motor because they go from 7,000 to +9,000(some higher) feet quick and I had trouble with my jetting there. By mid way on the big hills, the motor is starving for air. It is scary turning around with choked out power on a super steep face in deep sharp rock. The forest camping and the view from the top of a few of those mountain/hills/volcanoes is awesome.
More recently, I was up there visiting friends in (2003 or 04) and the forest service had the cinders closed or restricted access because of a bad fire season. I live to far away to frequent those areas now but I do miss it, and whenever I visit friends in Flag I cruise out there in the truck and hit some 4X trails.

Had my truck up there once or twice and would love to go back with my rail...but not until I have a second set of paddles so I can run some old ones...the cinders are definately harsher than sand.
Someone over at vwbaja.net just posted his photos from Memorial day up there:

We checked out the place in March. I only had the Yukon, so I didn't venture out too far. Looked interesting for quads, but I don't know if I woud bring my rail. Pretty area. Lots of other stuff to check out (Sunset Crater National Monument, Wupatki National Monument).
