I've never done more than a day trip to Glamis on a big weekend, but I have been there long enough to see the action. Buttercup is a bit calmer. There are still some wild ones there also, but seems to be fewer to me. The amount of people at both are pretty much the same when comparing the area thats occupied. I'll stick to Buttercup on the big weekends thank you. Most weekends for that matter, its just closer for me.

Gordons is a Dustbowl the sand drags are pretty kewl, we camp at Buttercup, gets busy around the Cul-de-Sac but if you dune deeper into Mexico it is pretty quiet.

I would advise against duning into Mexico. The Border Patrol keeps a very close watch on that area. They have several agents and they just installed a few cameras as well. The area also has buried sensors. They will know if you've been there. If they catch you coming back across the border through the dunes, that is considered an illegal entry into the USA and they can impound your vehicle and detain you. They are usaully pretty cool about it if you didn't realize you crossed, but I have heard of them impounding vehicles to those that run or do not cooperate. If you go deep into Mexico, it may be the Federalis you have to worry about & not the BP.

I'm not talkin bout dunin into like RockyPoint or anything!!! lol A trip to the Blowhole and the set of dunes just north are some of the best, most technical dunes I've seen. They are well out of reach of the Federalis and I have never seen BP back in there, (sand too soft)

If Gordons is too packed for you to camp you can always camp at buttercup near the plank road or even closer to the west canal and just ride to Gordons. Just takes a few minutes to cross the canal bridge and go over the freeway.

Don't be surprised to run into BP in places you never expected them. After 9/11 they got a bunch of new toys including some quads a upgrades to their rail. I got a friendly warning for just straying a few hundred feet into Mexico.

If I am well enough to go out, I'll be headin to Gordons with my sister. The drags GO OFF!! Test at night is cool, the crowd isn't as rowdy as comp. But the hill is much steeper. Like Tomfish1 said, Patton Valley is a KILLER HILL!!! Not sure where I'll be camping. Prolly just before you cross the canal, hang a left and follow in down to the North, usually down there about a mile. If I go with my buds that have all the kickass rails. Go straight over the canal (east) then out into dunebuggy flats. Look up at the sand drags. Straight down from the start line off the bottom of the dune about 200ft. Enclosed trailer that has Elite Offroad Engineering on it.

I've been going to Buttercup for 25 years, including the Blowhole, and I've never had a problem before either, but I have seen others that did. A few years ago there was a group of 3 wheelers and quads that had been in Algodones and came back thru the dunes. The Border Patrol spotted them and all but one guy tried to outrun them. They followed the group back to camp and impounded their vehicles. The guy that stopped was told to go thru the Inspection Station next time and let go. In the past year the Border Patrol has stepped up their activity around there. I just wanted to give you all a heads up. Your choice.

LoBuck, Yeah I hear what your're sayin. We all need to be careful where ever we Dune. Hey, btw can anyone tell me if Ogilby road is paved from Glamis to ButterCup? I might be meeting some friends for TG in Glamis and then cruise down to Buttercup for the rest of the weekend. THX

Ogilby is indeed paved and bits of it were just repaved this summer when they put in a new gas pipeline.
If you want a full story about what the BP can/will do to you contact Jerry Seaver (president of the ASA) He learned the hard way that they aren't putting up with that stuff anymore after his group strayed a little to far south a few years ago. Getting your vehicles back is not as easy as when they get towed by the city - and I'm sure most people know what a hassle that can be.

Gotpower, that sounds like a good way to spend the holiday. Glamis to Buttercup via Ogilby Road will take about 25 to 30 minutes maybe. Have fun!

Rubberneck, this "Canal Bridge" that connects Buttercup to Gordons, is it legal? Is it for OHV's?
