Different but the same
Buttercup is more like I've heard Dumont described. More razorbacks and really steep transitions. I know bike and quad guys love it but a lot of buggy guys don't because it's more technical riding when you have to take a buggy line. Very tight stuff - not much you can do in 3rd gear except for a few areas.
But you've got rideable dunes 10 feet out of camp:

http://hitesman.com/jason/sanddunes/secondjump.mpgYou're right on the mexican border though so the Border Patrol presence is very high. You also get a lot of bored Yuma kids and Marines out at buttercup comp leaving a mess. Not to mention the stuff that was probably left by illegals crossing through the dunes (since it's got not english at all on it.)
Gordon's the dunes are more like Glamis but still a bit choppier. It's more of a ride from the camping areas to good dunes than Buttercup or the washes but not much worse than the cement flats or most of Gecko. Patton is a lot like Olds only less crowded Greg Gorman took this shot on top of Patton over T-day weekend:
http://www.americansandassociation.org/mya..._Ryan.sized.jpgThere are drags along the sandhighway near Gordon's and I've heard they put the Glamis drags to shame if you like actual drags and not a parade. But I've never made it over to them myself yet.
Test hill at Gordon's is right along I-8 and is kind of like comp at Glamis was 10-15 years ago. A little crazy but nothing out of control. And it's a real hill that's on a par with at least Olds unlike comp which is barely a hill. I get bored halfway up test at night since you can't see the top...it's a tall steep hill. From the highway you don't realize how big it is becuase it goes down below highway level quite a bit.
Since there are fewer people the whoops are a lot smaller down in the south dunes as well. Both on the sandhighways and on the hills.
With a bike or quad I would highly recomend visitng buttercup with a buggy I'd say you would probably have more fun at Gordon's. Either way with the new bridge if you camp on the west edge of buttercup you can get to both areas very easily.
