I was talking with Chris at Ultrafilter over the weekend. They're one of the sites new sponsers and when I clicked on the banner, I read on their web page that they have this billet oil filter than never needs to be replaced. Just cleaned every 7500 miles. I went ahed and bought one for my truck. It should be here tomorrow or Wednesday. I figure that for 99 bucks, considering that I'll never have to replace it again it's a safe investment. I was just wondering if any of you motor heads had tried these out on your trucks or rails yet.

As soon as they make one for an '03 PSD, I'll buy one. It'd be great not to have to buy a new one every time.

I have one on the Honda.....I got it for the same reason. I know my car is just a simple street mo sheen and not one of these high performance doo hickies, but it will definetly cut down on the cost of oil filters and I hear it gives me extra miles in between cleanings/oil changes.

Well I have had them for my KTM motorcycle and two streetbikes for about 2 years now, they are made of stainless mesh and actually filter better than paper. They filter really well and hold up just as good. I figure that if they can be used on a motorcycle with a wet clutch and way more contaminents then they should be good for a auto. The only thing I can see different is the pressure bypass in auto filters.

I don't think is't the same guy. I know that there is another company out there that sells a similar filter but 200-300 bucks? Daaamn, that's steep. I didn't mind flippin out 100 but 2-3 just doesn't seem reasonable. IMO

I don't know the particulars about it.
I'd rather throw away a $5 filter 20 times than clean a $100 20 times.
What are teh specs that make it better than a regular oil filter?
Full flow?
What micron filtration?
What does it use for filter media?
Is it easy for Joe Public to clean without messing up the media?
That's the big drawback to cleanable air filters. Once you've messed it up, dirt gets right thru it and you didn't save any money.

it filters to 10 micron 35 absolute, woven T304 stainless mesh
as for "bypass" that means only 1 thing- UNFILTERED OIL
I know in my sandcar i would not want UNFILTERED or BYPASSED oil in my engine out in the dunes and i really don't want it in my everyday driver with the ultrafilter every drop of oil is filtered check it out www.ultraoilfilters.com

Seems like a pretty good deal. An oil change for my Duramax is like $60-70 each time (mostly because of the oil). However, I get my oil changes done for $35 at the dealership...and the do a look around, etc. Too bad a dealership wouldn't clean your filter for you

Does an aftermarket filter like that void any warranties?

I put it on yesterday after work. I't went on easy. I didn't really need to change the oil yet but did anyway. Question. The guys at Toyota used to say that I only needed to change the oil every 5000 miles or so. Does that still stand or can it go longer? Just curious.

looks cool, did'nt see any side by side testing that campared flow over the standard life of a paper filter, that would be nice to see. i like the zreo bypass for filtering, it seems as though your filter would clog up faster considering the consistant 35 micron rating, which is actually a good thing, but with no bypass seems like it could starve the motor. have you done any flow testing at 3k miles ?. any chance you have a fliter that will fit a 94-96 suburu legacy 2.2 motor ?
socaldmax
Jun 16 2005, 11:42 AM
Results are going to vary. An older or poorly tuned motor with a K&N air filter will have more crap in the oil and clog faster. A new engine with a stock paper filter will introduce fewer particulates.
Your mileage may vary. The reason most oil filters bypass is to alleviate super high pressure against the filter media and in the container. Although my factory oil pressure gauge on my Dmax indicated 80 psi cold, the actual pressure exceeded 110 psi when the engine was new.
If someone cares enough about their engine lubrication to buy one of these filters, they should also run an oil pressure gauge. This will give you a pretty good idea when to change the oil as well as when to clean the filter. As the viscosity breaks down, you'll see a gradual pressure drop at a set temp.
If you see a sudden pressure drop, time to shut off the engine.

I guess that you would need a gauge on the inlet and outlet to see if it was actually the filter or the engine that is causing the odd pressure number. Pressure drop across the media.
I didn't see any provisions on the webiste for an anti-drainback valve in the filter. Is there one? My 6.5L GM needs one.

We noticed a big change in our oil when we changed from our old "mesh style" air filter to the new TRUEFLOW.com 3 stage foam filter on our TT. The old filter was letting way too much dirt into the race motor. We changed to the new kind and it’s great.
We need to talk about an application for our TT power plant.
