Where should I ride and what is it like in Buttercup? Any GPS coordinates??
JSYI
Buttercup is kinda small and less space to ride. The dunes are more rolling but watch those drops. More of a family place in my opinion.
Rubberneck
I don't have any GPS coordinates but Comp hill is very easy to find. There are some nice bowls on the west side of buttercup near comp. It's definitely more of a family place especially if you camp down by the old plank road.

Buttercup is smaller and more technical. More drop offs and witches eyes and tighter bowls. There are places that you can have full on fast runs but you have to look for them and go off the beaten track.

Comp is super easy to find. Just go the end of the parking area and follow the sand highway back to the first valley and there it is. If you go all the way to the west edge of the valley there's a HUGE bowl about two ridges further west that's easy to find and behind it (between the bowl and the highway) there's a series of large bowls that are a LOT of fun.

Back behind the valley towards Mexico are some nice dunes but things get soft back there so be carefull - but there's always virgin since most people are afraid of the soft stuff. The further east you go the further south you can go without getting into trouble with the Border Patrol but I've yet to explore that area much.

The crowd at Buttercup is quite possibly the friendliest in the dunes anywhere. I've never seen any punks or fights and only once did I even see anyone leave behind a "kiddie track" without filling it in.

Not much you need GPS coords for but I believe Greg Gorman has a list of things at Buttercup to find and posted it in the GPS forum at the ASA website. Glenn (lobuck) may have a copy of it he'll share as well.

One neat thing to find is the border monument. Go south until you hit the border (be carefull sometimes it's easy to recognize sometimes it isn't and if you cross over BP may not let you off with a warning) then head for an area just south of the midway campground. There's an obelisk there that marks the US/Mexican border and is a neat place to stop for a break.
JSYI
that stuff back there is pretty soft and the bp are everywhere at night. Make sure you watch out for any illegals laying in the bowls at night. Almost ran over a couple last time.

You missed?? WTF?? Next time just try harder! [Big Grin]

Jason what is the name of the camping area at Buttrcup? Is there a camping fee? What is the best day to get there for spaces?
Rubberneck
Not trying to beat Jason to it but here's a link with the names of the camps. The fees are the same as Glamis. They use the same pass so if you already have one you don't need another.

Also, if you camp down by the old plank road there is plenty of room for camping. I don't think I've ever seen a weekend when it was too full to camp there.
jhitesma
Ok Ok....Buttercup.

I'm not sure what the exact names are since I've heard them used a couple of different ways but basically I use Buttercup to refer to the entire area south of I-8. You get off the highway at the Gray's Well exit and are dumped on the south side at the first camping area.

This is the camping area I normally refer to as "Buttercup" and as far as I know that's it's official name. There's a paved road that most people camp right next to with a big circle at the end. North and east of that are large flat areas that provide lots more camping. Rules and fees are the same as the rest of the ISDRA - no saving spaces, same pass, need whips...and all the other rules and regs.

But there's enough room that if you grab a spot north of the road (between the road and the highway basically) there's always room for a big group. You can even camp in the first valley but you'll probably need a small trailer and 4x4 to get back there...and it's not the quietest spot to camp icon_smile.gif

If you keep going west on the access road past this campground you'll come to two or three other smaller campgrounds. Midway, Gray's and one that I don't think has a name. They're smaller and fill up fairly quick but if you go a little off the road there are large flats that you can camp in as well. It's just a further drive to the dunes.

I've shown up on saturday of big weekends and never had a problem finding a place to slip my truck in. But if you want to have a big camp I'd recomend getting out there on Thursday or early on Friday if it's a big weekend. Other weekends there's always room.

Gordons and Buttercup are the places me and my family have been going for a really long time. It is sweet, yeah there is witches eyes and dropoffs but once you get used to it is pretty tight. You should go to competition at night, its packed but its cool just to watch everyone go up the hill at night. Or if you want hit it up yourselves. You should just try it.

Thats funny! We were out duning and saw a family running down a dune with their luggage. They were on the next ridge. So we cruised over there and they were gone. Maybe buried themselves just enough? :? It was pretty funny though. Looked like one of those signs on the freeway.
