What is Dune Buggy Flats and where is it??
Rubberneck
Thats a good question. I know all of the camping areas at Buttercup but I've only heard the term "dunebuggy flats" a few times. I believe it's the large camping area as soon as you get off at Grays well rd. Very crowded on big weekends. You're better off heading down a couple miles to near the old plank road.

As far as I know, Dune Buggy Flats is the main camping area at Gordon's Well. It starts as soon as you cross the bridge over the canal. If you do a web search on the term "dune buggy flats," you pretty much get the same idea.

Actually Dunebuggy flats is the camping area at Gordon's well just north of I-8. When there was open camping west of the canal it made sense to have a name for that area to diferentiate it from the other camping at Gordon's. Now that it's the only camping left having a special name for it is kind of silly IMHO.

The areas at Gray's well are (from east to west) Buttercup (with the parking circle and crowds), Midway (with the plankroad) and Gray's well at the far end. Or do I have Midway and Gray's backwards...always forget because I seldom go over that far....

Okay maybe that's why I've only heard the term a few times! [Razz]
The only one I know the name for is midway. Midway isn't very big and it's always packed! Thats about halfway between Buttercup (parking circle) and the old plank road. We normally camp on the flats near the old plank road. Just a little further down from the pay phone.

Jason, That's the right order, but Midway is from just west of the closed area to the top of the hill where the Plank Road is . Bascially between the 2 Border Patrol shades. Grays Well is where the Tamarisk trees are just west of the Plank Road (at the bottom of the hill). Decades ago, there used to be a gas station and picnic area where the Tamarisk trees are. I never saw it, but I've seen pictures. You can still see the foundations and cement floors there.

We used to leave for Buttercup very early to try and get a spot by the trees. I think it happened once. By far the best spot to camp. (in my opinion)
