About three years ago a bud and I were riding quads way out in the dunes that are now part of the closure. Just cruising along enjoying a great day, then all of the sudden I see a small animal cruising the dunes. So we stop, shut the bikes off, and take a closer look. Turns out it was a Badger. Before that I didn't know Badgers inhabited the dunes. I pulled my camera out of my backpack to try and get a picture, but the Badger went into a bush and wasn't coming out. So we just left him alone, but it was cool to see him cruisin' the dunes.
Anyone else ever seen a Badger out there? Slappy? What about other wildlife sightings?

Hey King, I thought I was seeing things when I came across one between Olds and China wall about 10 years ago. Like you say a big surprize! We let him be and went on our way. Maybe they travel between they flat desert areas to the east and west of the dunes from time to time. I would not think there would be enough of what ever they eat to stay in the dunes for long.

Nah Slap, KG doesn't smoke the stuff that makes you see things. I swear on Mother G that story is true. I couldn't believe it myself when I saw it, but it was a 100% sober sighting.

I saw a Free Willie in the dunes with a full moon. A few fat naked Walruses and lots of varieties of Bees. I think the entomological name for them is BooBees.
Yeah but I was drunk in camp by the fire so I might be wrong...

I've seen a few beavers out in the dunes before

Have seen some other wildlife too, mostly at Comp. Hill or around the campfire.
(sorry but I just had to do it... Badgers, really now...and you seen this drinking Coors Light,,, WOW!)
Have seen a sidewinder one night and coyote a few times, jack rabbits, scorpions, beetle bugs, hawks, owls, other birds and even some of those lizards.

Went and grabbed by Audubon Society Deserts book and found that the Badger, more specifically named the Taxidea taxus. Grows to a length of 20.5-34.5 inches and lives throughout the entire US west of the Mississippi. Althought its prime habitat is the plains, farmland and edge of woods, it is native to the Great Basin, Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan deserts. Reasons you primarly havent seen one is because it becomes a nocturnal animal where it encounters man.
Eats, rodents, rats,, mice , gophers, and can dig a hole like hell to escape, seek cooler temperatures, or to hunt.
Lucky KG to have seen Mr. Badger.

Doug, I think that was my cat OJ, often mistaken for a skunk or a badger. She disapeared about 3 years ago. I left her at home and when I got back from Glamis she was gone. Must have been in the truck the whole time.
Did this badger like beer & carne asada?

Speaking of badgers I just found this link over at DesertUSA discussing a very similar topic:
http://www.desertusa.com/cgi-bin/mb/messag...&thread=373.msgAlso some good warnings about why you shouldn't mess with a badger if you do find one!
And for those of you who are either simpsons fans or just like typing in URL's you hear referenced on TV shows you can also check out:
http://whatbadgerseat.com/Which also brings me to something completely off topic - the actual Mr. X webpage from the Simpsons:
http://thesimpsons.com/mrx/Ha! Take that dude who does Connections on TLC - I'd take this further and show you all how badgers are responsible for the invention of nuclear power...but it's late and I'm tired from an absolutely crummy day at Gordon's well.

Yes, there are badgers out there. My hubby has seen them a couple of times over the years but we haven't seen any in the past 10 years or so. I'm sure they are still there, but aren't they nocturnal? They're nasty little SOB. Have you ever seen their claws?

Thank God they weren't dripping. That's proof that you saw them before they got to you.

I saw a badger in a wash at Superstition about 17 years ago. I was surprised to see it. This is the only place I have ever heard another story of a badger in the Caili desert
what hurts?

Saw one out deep in the dunes in the summer of 09. Little booger made it back to his hole before we could snap a pic.

From a source that wasn't able to take a picture as the badger was haulin arse up the dune.. Not a fox, shaped different and had some gnarly claws. We've seen several foxes in the dunes at dusk

some day we'll get pictures
