Full Version: Wing Trunk Storage

I'm searching for some real-life experience here...

I just added a wing trunk to my four-seater. Standard, aluminum style setup with dezus fasteners, plenty of room, no tail-light wiring to work around.

I wanna store both tools and spare parts in there without them either destroying my trunk, or destroying themselves as they bounce around in there like a pin-ball machine.

What tricks does everyone use to store stuff inside their wing-trunk? Closed-cell foam padding? Pelican cases? Blankets? icon_confused.gif

If you actually have the time/energy to post pics that would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!! Notworthy.gif

I personally don't carry anything hard in my wing trunk for that reason. I have seen a few people who use those battery hold down straps to hold tools in a pouch. Another idea is to get a soft sided cooler that fits tight in your trunk and stuff it full of whatever tools you need than top it off with a couple of rags stuffed in the bag to keep everything in place.

until I get my tool bags that mount between the seat and side panels, I wrap whatever tools I want in a couple terry cloth rags then put them inside a backpack, they are place in the middle of the trunk, then I put a sweatshirt or jacket on either side for me and the Mrs. works really well. Only down side is one of my latches barely grabs so sometimes it pops loose, but I saw velcro on the edge of where the lid meets the wing and that should hold it better and hide the scratches where they meet.

IMHO a Wing Trunk is a bad spot for tools and spare parts: high and way back has a bad effect on your center of gravity icon_uhoh.gif
i would buy some vinyl tool bags and store all the heavy stuff under the seats. use the W T for things like pullovers and jackets icon_wink.gif

I used some of the above methods.

With space on the sides and floor board a bit limited, I chose to put stuff in my trunk.

On one side is big towrope, held together with small bungee cords.

Middle is gymbag, with tools, parts wrapped in rags, small bags, and a small tarp for those time when something has to come apart.

other side is sweat shirts. Seems to work.

Would add dividers in there, have to rivet them in though. might mess up the paint, but yer decision.

I forgot to mention I dont really know what tools I should bring, so right now I dont have that many, maybe a small handful. My tow rope is one of those Super Straps so it is lightweight, and by the way work great. When I do figure out what tools I need to carry, they will be between my seats and sidepanels.

One trick that may work, (If you must store hard parts in the wing) is to obtain a flat air mattress type of inflatable bag that matches the size of the wing.

Put your stuff in and blow the mattress up to remove any slack.

If it can't move, it can't damage the wing.

This works in coolers too. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks guys, some good ideas for sure. thumb.gif

I wasn't planning on carrying that much heavy stuff, but more than I can fit under the seats for sure. I would like to start carrying a spare axle and at least one CV. It's really hard to decide what is worth carrying and what is not. You always need what you did not bring. Tape, wire, and a good tool set always come in handy. With a dirtbike it was always a clutch lever and a shifter, no matter what.

Wrapping the parts in towels and stuffing them into a larger bag sounds like a winner. Then bulk around that with jackets/blankets. I might try that. I may still try to find some dense foam padding and line the bottom of the trunk for good measure.

Up till now I have been strapping my backpack of tools/parts into one of the rear seats. But that goes out the window when you have a full boat.

If you wanted to get real tricky you could grab all the things you want to carry and make a foam box with exact cutouts for those items. Half the cutout in the bottom portion and half in the lid.

Not a bad idea! popcorn.gif

I used the foam cut out idea. I bought a thick piece of foam and cut it out for the specific items.
I carry a tow strap, blanket, and in the center a tool bag...
works perfect. the stuff does not move, even in flight icon_biggrin.gif

What I think you really need is some rust remover for that thing!!!!! tongue.gif

tools in a bag, then wrapped in a blanket, put in center of trunk, then two big pieces of foam on either side. it is tight and faily light. Leave the axle and cv's in the mo ho.

In the wing trunk I carry, a small tool kit zipped up in a soft carry bag, several fan/fuel pump relays, tow strap, 2 flashlight, beef jerkey, and other sorted non-perishable snacks, 2 jackets, bennies, face wipes and of course tissue paper for the Misses.

CV and axles can be left back at camp. You can always go get them w/ any further tools you may need.

Yeah I considered that, but sometimes we're out there quite a ways without any backup. I know that isn't smart, but sometimes it just happens that way. icon_twisted.gif

Dirt Bagz makes several different size and shapes of bags that come with straps and screw down metal loops. I picked mine up at Kartek, and mounted under the seat. You could mount it in the trunk also.

we use to carry our tools, our super strap, and our jackets, our TP, and any other crap we could cram in it.. Since you always take a jacket... we would just dump our cavas tool bag in, and wrap it in one of the jackets!:D

That was UNTIL... one day we were dumb, and forgot to lock the wing!! Lost everything!! Except for a pack of cigarettes we were carrying for a buddy!! coocoo.gif

^ Been there, done that. Lost two tow straps, oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, realys, whip leds ($$$ 70.00), spare belt for the LS1, small bag o 'tools, a tarp and a jacket!! icon_mad.gif

Backtracked..we'd only gone a couple o'miles...couldn't find a thing...someone scored, I'm sure.

I use two pieces of foam one on top and one on the bottom with a cut out on the side for my tool box. Just put stuff between the foam like a sandwich works great got the foam from a upholstery shop they cut to fit. thumb.gif thumb.gif

"THEY" cut it to fit? Did you take the car to their shop or just give them the specs?

Just gave them the specs because 3 inch foam is tough to cut straight... thumb.gif thumb.gif
