Got my new toy for fathers day.(thanks Nik) What do you guys use in your parts washer. The only thing that she could find is biodegradable degreaser. It was $66 for a 5gal bucket. I've got a 40gal washer.$$ shocker.gif Can I still get solvent instead of soap? Is the soap just as good as solvent?
Any help would be great before I go shop around. wacko.gif
Thanks

Check McMaster Carr. They have 5 gal for about $50...but you dilute it down with 4-9 parts water.

Somebody once told me to just use paint thinner and add a little ATF. Don't know how well it works though.

I am not a mechanic but a reputable one(VW) here in town recomended this to me. It is for parts washers but I just soaked my stuff in the 5 gal buckets(since I don't have one tongue.gif ). It worked good but in a washer I bet it would really clean. It is called "safety solvent 142" & I bought it at a Union 76 bulk plant. Here in AZ it was $6 a gal, happy cleaning. thumb.gif

I use straight Diesel fuel in my solvent tank.
Sandzilla
Home Depot >Mineral Sprits... Some people put a little tranny fluid in it too. That's a quickie cleaner.

don't go with the heavy duty degreaser from harbor freight. That stuff sucks! 20 minutes in the tank and the grease is still gunked on. Diesel works good but anything flammable, even as low risk as diesel is dangerous.

Plain ol' paint thinner, works great and its cheap too. Keep the lid closed when not using it, it will evapoarte. JT

Costco has a brand that is really good. Even peels paint when new. It reduces at about 20 to 1. It costs about $4.00 bucks a gallon. Biodegradable.

Stay away from Petroleum products without the proper gloves and stuff. And if you've got kids.

Fire hazard too. It doesn't matter how well it cleans if you burn down your home.

Thanks for all the input guys. icon_smile.gif

Hey all. Most water bases solvents are "biodegradable", as is, it's non-hazardous when mixed. Remember, if you buy a tank made for water bases cleaners, use a water based cleaner in it. Most have seals suited for the higher ph of the water based degreasers. Oh, and put a GFI on it.

Look, I can get anyone real petroleum based SOLVENT. If a lot of people need it, I can get it for dirt cheap. Around $1 a gallon. If one or 2 of you need it, I can probably get it for free. If you need a water based cleaner, I can get the best stuff on the market. We'll have to work out a deal if I can't get it for free. But, it would be far less than the $4 per gallon you pay elsewhere and a lot better.

PM me with ??s I won't be back until Sunday though.

Oh, the problem with Mineral Sprits/paint thinner is that their flashpoint is very low. AND they dry the crap out of seals and such.
hopper
Kerosene flashpoint = 100deg.
Mineral sprits flashpoint = 125deg.
Diesel fuel flashpoint = 130deg.

If you have a tank that was made for Solvent and use water base, it will corrode.

Hay BamBam, I am interest in the Solvent.
sandhopper
I would like to get in on the solvent deal too

Just wanna say thanks to BamBam, he hooked me up with some cleaner. Sorry that I couldn't come get it person because I worked on Saturday. Time and a half all day didn't hurt. Thanks PapaPerry for picking it up for me.
Now for the question, at what ratio do I dilute this stuff at? It's a 40 washer.
Thanks again,
Ray

p.s. Colorado get REALLY cold in the winter. shocker.gif
