I am ready to have a tranny built, and I am wondering who I should send it to. I am in Phoenix AZ but I don't mind using someone out of state. The guy I was going to use here locally said he was going to be gone until August...and then who knows when he would be able to get to it. So now I'm looking for other options.

I had heard that there was an issue with some gears being on back order. Is this still true??? and does it affect the 091.

Also, I had talked to Mark from www.markssandtrans.com Very cool guy, very helpful. Anyone have any feedback on his work??? and how long does it usually take to have one of these things built??? (sorry, I'm new to the buggy thing)

I just looked into this myself.

Rancho wants $3000 for their built 091.

Wright Gearbox wants $2800 for theirs.

Those prices are without core exchange.

If AZ Transaxle will not do it, call Kevin McMullen from McMullen Racing in Phoenix. My experience with a bus trans with him was outstanding. Had a problem, that could not be proven to come from him and he took it apart and fixed her up at no cost.

I've never had any experience with the AZ builders, so it might be in your best interest to keep it local. However, if you get in a bind, I know Mark personally and not only is he a great guy; he is one of the top builders on the West Coast. His transaxles are all top quality and he stands behind everything he does. When I first got into VW powered sand cars, I bought one of his 002's. I had a little trouble shifting from 2nd to 3rd. He was coming down to Glamis for President's Day and brought a completely new trans with him and we installed it right then and there. It turned out it was my shifter (rookie mistake), he adjusted it, welded the shift gate, tested it out, and he still wouldn't let me pay him.

I got to hang out with him and the Oregon invasion and we went on several rides. I've been meeting them for Pres. Day almost every year since.

Great guy, he takes care of his friends, customers, and anyone else that wanders in off the dunes.

Pat was my first choice. He said he has like 10 trannies right now, and he is going on vacation for 3 weeks. icon_mad.gif icon_mad.gif Too bad. I talked to him a few years ago. GREAT GUY!!!!! Notworthy.gif and he was willing to take time out of his day to educate me.

As the Great KG would say,"Back in '89,"

PAt used to do our 091's. He was the only one that would work with us on increasing the durability of our tranny with a Mazda. Everyone else just said that they break trannies , get used to it.

We worked with him on tuning our driving and his trannies to the point that we never had one break.

Bill Capatch was the same. Durable and reliable. Both were priced about the same.
Kevein McMullen was an apprentice with Pat for a while.

Give Kevin McMullen a call. Fast work, fair price and 100% stands behind what he does. He is a Class 1 racer as well and his day-to-day business is transmissions. Worth a call or visit.

Dropped my tranny off at Kevin's shop today. Very cool guy, and very helpful. He also assured me that he would have a VERY good turn-around time icon_biggrin.gif Now it's off to beer.gif and playing the waiting game.
