I bought a sand rail from a third party without a VIN. I want to get this thing registered for a green sticker but have no paperwork, other than the Bill of Sale. Can some one guide me through the process and give me some point of contacts to get stated. blink.gif
Xtreme Motorsports
Call your local CHP and make an appointment to get that number from the CHP. AFTER you get this number, you can take it to the DMV, show them your bill of sale, the paperwork the chp gave you and pay your fees. They'll give you a green sticker right there.
Cousin Itt
You need to go to the D.M.V. first, apply for registration and pay 25.00. The C.H.P. wants this paper work before making your appointment with them. After C.H.P. you go back to D.M.V. and pay the rest of your fees. The D.M.V. paper is what the C.H.P. enters id and vin numbers on for the new registration.
Xtreme Motorsports
That's interesting. They do it differently here in Bakersfield. At least as of last week. Also you can get it all done in the same day. None of this roundy round mess.
Permagrin
Yep goto DMV first
Xtreme Motorsports
That sucks. I can't imagine driving all over LA, back and forth to the DMV, CHP, DMV, CHP, DMV, CHP. That would drive anyone crazy.
buddalo
Yup, Drives you crazy but DMV first... coocoo.gif
duneluvr
We are in the process of doing the same thing and here in Corona you have to see DMV first, pay fees and get paperwork, go to CHP to make a appt for them to see the rail. Then you go back the month and a half later for CHP to review the rail and give you a vin, NOW you have to go back to DMV with you CHP paperwork and IF they have no more fees to add on, they will register the rail and give you your green sticker then. blury.gif

DMV SUCKS !!!!!! 25chatter.gif wacko.gif
BeachHead
I believe the reason you are supposed to go to the dmv first is that technically, you're not even supposed to transport an ohv without registration. And, at the first dmv appt, you do get a temporary registration which allows you to transport the car to the chp for numbers checks/vin assignment.

And I couldn't agree more...the dmv is among the worst places in the world for a non-criminal to visit....
DUNE
dsrtsnk, dude your nightmare is just starting. like they said DMV, CHP, CHP, DMV, that's the process.

Being that it's from out of state they just may make you get a bond on the rail before the DMV will register it. That cost for that is 100.00 for every 10,000 the rail is worth... plthumbsdown.gif

CK out this thread.DMV Sucks

Maybe i should start setting up registration services. Drop your car off on one day and pick it upt he next day registered. Those LA offices are too complicated.
DUNE
Alan that would be a great service to us if you did. Going through the DMV and CHP takes way to long. We got better things to do then wait in lines, like going to Glamis...
Xtreme Motorsports
I just never realized how much work you all have to go thorugh. We just got two cars regeistered last week. Enitre process took maybe 2.5 hours. CHP, DMV, and stopped at Sonic for a Vanilla Dr. Pepper.

That's part of the reason we get set up as a reegistered builder through the state. On new cars, you just pic it up and it's done. One existing cars, drop them off and pick them up a day or so later. Hey, maybe i could figure out a pick up and drop off service. That would be great.

Do they do non resident registration for OHV? If they do can you insure the buggy in California with an out of state registration? Kinda like we do with the boat reg.

Yes Alan please do. The 6 hr drive and overnight stay to pick up next day all done is totally worth it. I am still waiting for CHP to verify my supposed July 14th inspection date. Then back to DMV for who knows how many more papers they will want.I got a bill of sale for roller and engine. They want the original build receipt or copy from original purchaser of car(yeah right), statement of facts,Bond (cuz its over $5K).They got my $25 already to temp reg it though.AT least its started
Funny thing is when I insured it I just called my agent, sent them a bunch of detailed pics and value of completed car.All they asked is if it had any type of identifying frame or engine #s on it.Gave them 4 digit frame # thats welded on.Thats it.EASY. Sacramento DMV is horrible.I am taking July 14-19 to hopefully get this done.It would be awesome if you could do it instead, for a fee of course for your services icon_biggrin.gif

I'm working on this. It's not going to be an overnight process but i'll see how quick i can put something together. Need to see if there are going to be any complications with me registering other peoples cars.
Cousin Itt
Some CHP offices may be have different rules. I used the o'side office they made my app. over the phone. And don't be late, I was almost late and they said I would have needed another app.

I have a river house in Blythe (CA), but I register my boat in AZ as a non resident, the diffrence is that it goes through the dept of game and fish ( yes, game and fish, not fish and game). Does AZ have non res reg through there DMV for off road cars? I am going to check it out, if anyone has info let the board know...

Here in Temecula, we have to do the DMV/CHP/DMV gig. The CHP has a wait that's about a month long...

I couldn't wait, and since we were taking buggies built out-of-state and out-of-state visitors to Pismo, we just ordered a couple out-of-state orange stickers.

I would have gladly paid a few bucks to have the green stickers immediately.

Mr Dune.Im amazed at how different Dmv seems to operate at different areas.Mine would not collect any TAXES until all paperwork was done through CHP and I came back to them per their Rulebook(which the agent was reading and showing me rules) Seems like luck if you can get through easily without the multiple trips some need to take.

I FINALLY got VIN # for my buggy. In Arizona it was pretty painless… I don't know about California. All I needed was the bill of sale. And as long as you don't want a plate to drive it on the street is was very inexpensive. $25.00 for a class II inspection and $12.00 for an "off road" plate. Now I can get insurance on it and take people for a ride. I just didn't want to do it without having "liability" insurance… I'll tell ya… That was a BIG concern for us.

I just did this. You must first go to the DMV. They give you a form to take to the CHP. Make an appt and the CHP was pretty painless. Then back to the DMV and you are in busines..

I downloaded the necessary paperwork from the DMV website.

I'll sell you the vin off my frame that is bent. icon_biggrin.gif

I just went through the same process Zilla, AZ rules vs. CA. Made an appointment took the buggy down and they inspected and assigned a vin to the car with placard and all, it was all done at a DMV office so if I didnt haveto take my son to football I could have gone back in the office and got the offroad plate and title.

Naah… I'm workin'... Just taking a post break. ph34r.gif

The Racer X radios work GREAT! The wife and I love them. After you dune with them on for one day, you'll never dune without them again. headbang.gif

When you get your system, you'll see where to plug everything into the back of the unit… Very simple. The ipod and Talkabout cords come with the system (extra) but if your told them what you'll be using I'm sure he hooked you up with what you'll need.

BUT make sure you get a noise filter for your power wire. It's very easy to install and it will filter out any HF noise from your engine and electronics… It's just good "cheap" insurance for your system. If you didn't order one… Get one. I think it was $15.00 from Racer X.

Now get that toe better... Dune season is coming fast! icon_biggrin.gif
