Well, the slapster finally managed to find someone with more of an environmental background to take over as moderator like we've wanted.

Please welcome Spider to the forums and give him the same respect you gave me as moderator. I'm sure he'll return the favor in kind.

I'll still be here and may still even start up threads on various plants and animals from time to time (I really wanted to do more like the Dunes Sunflower thread but have just been very busy lately.) but have strongly felt that this forum would benefit from being moderated by someone who falls more on the "other side of the fence" as it were.

So Spider, welcome and good luck!

jhitesma et alia,

Thanks for the welcome. I am from the other side of the fence on many issues, but I don't think I'll be doing much different from what jhitesma has been doing. He's done a fine job.

Some of you have seen posts I've done at desertUSA.com, so you might have some idea of my ideas and background. If you haven't read what I've written before, then you have not missed much. If you're curious, you might bounce over there for a bit.

I think this is supposed to be fun and informative and will approach it that way. So lets have fun, and we can all try to inform each other while bashing each other's brains out.

Just kidding. user posted image

All I'd ask of folks is that we be respectful and keep things in perspective. Message boards are about sharing information, discussing issues and disagreeing about perspectives. Disagreement is a good part of the fun of these boards, so I'm all for a good argument and even a little good natured mockery.

Flame wars, insults and four-letter words are, however, boring as all hell for everyone except for those involved in the exchanges. So I'm asking that we not be bores.

Otherwise, lets have fun.

Cheers,

Spider

P.S. I should say that esco_man and I are already off to a bad start.

Hey Spider,
I don't go over to that board and was just wondering now that you said something. What name do you Post Under and what forum? I tried to look at a few today, but didn't see this name anywhere, so???????

Michelle-
This is the Spider that I suggested moderating back when the whole thing blew up with Blue Sky. He does post on the DUSA board and he has always been very good about trying to answer any questions that people bring up. I have actually been able to have an ongoing dialogue with him and have found his replies to be well-thought out and well written. I don't think we need to worry about him ignoring our questions and slinging barbs like BS would do. And no Darren, it is not the Robert Mc Millan, who is the spYder on the ASA board.
Spider, welcome to the board-I'm sure you will do a great job! user posted image

Just wanted to welcome you to the board Spider! It's funny, but for a person who moniters this board, but rarely posts, this topic has really tripped my trigger. I look forward to an honest, educated, opinion from someone who's views may differ from mine. Once again, welcome...and good luck....you might need it. Mike

Michelle,

I went to the desertusa.com board, and you're right. Most of my posts have been burried in other people's posts. And most of the topics I've brought up have been moved far down the board or off of the board by more recently posted topics.

I should say that I do not think I should be an issue of discussion. The environment should, but I don't mind people having some idea of how I work through issues.

Thanks for the words of support, luvdunin. I remember going back and forth with you in a good discussion while everyone else threw mud at each other.

And, mrgotdunes, I don't drive Corvairs, because I take everything Ralph Nadar says as the absolute truth. ;)

Here are a few topics I've been more involved in:

Oh, don't get me started on Ralph Nader!
"Unsafe at Any Speed" was a good book, I got to read a signed copy, but he killed a very good car and I'll never forgive him for that!

luvdunin/Julie- I didn't not ask the above question to get into any kind of "ignoring our questions and slinging barbs", I just wanted to see who he was. I tried to look over there, but didn't see anything and had spent about 3 hrs looking in different places.

Spider, thanks for putting ups the links. I welcome you to the board. I hope you can help out with a lot of issues.

One of the reasons I asked who you were, was because of an area in Palm Springs called White Water/Windy Point.

Do you happen to know any issues that concern White Water/Windy Point? I have read over the draft and have some issues concerning it and the Temp. Closures that are infect. Plus I have not found anyone that is taking comments on the DRAFT Issues and the closures.

I didn't think that you had asked the question for that reason. My comments about him not behaving like BS were just a general observation that went along with the rest of what I was saying.

Spider
Michelle,

The quick answer to your question is no. I am really not an expert on the closures that have gone on, but I've been trying to learn more. I know all of the basics that everyone else knows (ie. lawsuits, endangered species, access issues) but I do not know the details in the White Water/Windy Point area.

I know enough to know the details are extremely important. It's not a simple matter of which roads are closed for either side. The location of the roads, the effect of the closure on endangered species and the effect on access make the closure issue horendously complex.

I live in the West Mojave and the local issues involve the desert tortoise, ranching, access to private property, dust from vehicles, and, of course, recreation. I imagine White Water/Windy Point has local issues that are guiding many of the decisions there, but have little importance anywhere else.

I'll try to dig some things up though and maybe we could start a thread. I'm sorry for not getting more topics going as of yet. I've been going back and reading previous posts so I can get a better idea of what people think and don't replicate issues that have already been discussed. This might be a good issue to start digging on.

Cheers,

Spider
