I meant to post this reminder sooner but have been way-laid by some other issues recently... sorry for the late reminder.

There is an important Desert Advisory Council meeting coming up this Saturday, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm in Ontario. The meeting will be held in the Ontario Airport Hilton, located at 700 North Haven Avenue, in Ontario.

If you were heading to the Sand Car Challenge from out of town, head out earlier and stop in at the meeting.

These meetings occur from time to time and our presence isn't always terribly important. This time though, if we don't stand up for ourselves we could get stuck with something we don't want.

According to Roy Denner, an OHV representative on the Desert Advisory Council, among other things, Saturday's meeting will include:

QUOTE
1) A discussion about, and the likely formation of, a Technical Review Team (TRT) to evaluate the Special Permit process for events held in the California Desert District. The TRT will review the permit process and develop standards and guidelines for permit applications. The TRT will also address the Cost Recovery requirement for special events (mandated by Congress) and develop standards and guidelines for event cost estimating and cost accounting for events held within the California Desert District.

2) A discussion about, and the likely formation of, Technical Review Teams (TRT's) for the OHV recreation areas of Dumont Dunes and El Mirage.  These TRT's will advise the BLM on the disbursement and application of use fees collected in those areas.  These TRT's will be composed of representatives from user groups that pay the fees and local community representatives that have an economic interest in the continuing operation of those recreation areas.

Members of the OHV community who are familiar with Dumont Dunes and El Mirage who would like to provide input on the formation of these TRT's and would like to be considered for participation on the TRT's for those areas are invited to attend the June DAC meeting.

Any and all that can make it, please do. We have a chance to get "our own" on these TRTs... members of the community that actually have a clue what our community needs. Let's seize this opportunity while we can!

Roy's email referenced a special use permit, which I believe is for special events only... but he may also be talking about the New And Improved legislation under which our money is being collected now.

That legislation includes a Special Recreation Permit (SRP) that I understand requires the formation of a committee to oversee not only how the money is spent, but also any change in the fee itself.

I also seem to recall that the current Technical Review Team we have at Glamis was directly linked to the Fee Demo program which is, of course, now non-existent.

Either way, it looks like a shiny new committee will be forming and WE NEED TO BE PART OF IT.

Vicki ,

I don't believe this SRP topic relates to Glamis ant the TRT or the new fee program.

My take is the SRP referenced here relates more to Organized events such as Barstow to Vegas, and various motorcycle type race events. It's just a supposition on my part but sitting in on countless meetings recently I know the M/C guys have been playing heck getting some continuity in on the ground application of the permits

This is not meant to discourage anyone from attending.

I believe you are probably right. But I also believe there will at least be some discussion regarding Glamis in particular and that's where we should all be sitting up.

I believe our presence at this meeting is, at the very least, important for impression... we have many battles ahead and these guys need to know the area has tremendous user support.

I understand. And there will be plenty for you to do in the very near future... and you know I'll find you icon_biggrin.gif

The turnout was, unfortunately, not as great as it could have been. While there were some interested people in the audience, there were not nearly enough to support the important issues that were discussed that day.

Hey, I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty. We all have busy lives and with summertime comes vacations and trips to the beach and all the fun stuff that makes our paying gigs worth the effort.

I'm just saying that it makes such a difference to the members of the Desert Advisory Council to actually have desert users contribute to desert issues and more so in this case, since some of the issues discussed directly relate to so many of us.

We have so much happening in our play areas right now, and it's all happening without our control because we just aren't bothering to contribute. It sure would be great to see that change.

Go here for a preliminary recap.
